Warsaw 2013 Review: TRAP STREET Is A Thought-Provoking Gem Of Chinese New Wave

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 03:00 AM PDT

All those who've been closely watching the gradual evolution of Chinese cinema over the course of the last ten years must've realized by now that the country's directors are tackling all the more controversial topics with less fear and more confidence, mostly to stunningly spot-on results. The Chinese new wave is at the peak of popularity all over the world right now and Trap Street is a film that only confirms this trend in an utterly convincing way, even more when one realizes that it's a directorial debut of a woman who's previously worked only in production. Because it's a film that uncovers a ridiculously serious yet deeply concealed problem, it's been shown only in places outside China and even the producer during the Q&A...

Review: Raya Martin and Mark Peranson's LA ULTIMA PELICULA Makes the Apocalypse Such a Melancholic but Amusing Affair

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT

The year 2012 was, for most of humanity, a waiting game. The Mayans predicted the world's end. Riots sprouted. Floods happened. Scandals erupted. It seemed the Mayans spoke true, but there was still no assurance that the world was on the verge of its own demise. Amidst the chaos produced by the world's hesitation to die, film was quietly performing its own disappearing trick. There were debates. Self-proclaimed vanguards of the cinematic arts were busy looking forward, confident of the continuation of the business despite the business' abandonment of its first medium. The rest, those oblivious to the business of movie-making, were subsisting on throes of nostalgia, scrambling for the last remaining reels of film and creating very personal odes to celluloid, on celluloid. The...

Watch Tony Jaa Fly Through The Roof In TOM YUM GOONG 2 Clip

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT

How did director Prachya Pinkaew up the ante in Tom Yum Goong 2 after Tony Jaa had to evade a gang of BMX riders at an abandoned warehouse in the last installment? How about evading a gang of motorcyclists on top of a building and throw in some in-your-face 3D effects for good measure.Kham (Tony Jaa) has become the suspect in the murder of Suchart- the influential owner of an elephant camp, who was killed by three punches to the dead spots by a martial arts expert, and Kham (Tony Jaa) was the last one seen at crime scene. He needed to run away from the authorities and the hunt by Suchart's twin nieces (Jija Yanin and Teerada Kittisiriprasert) Luckily, he was helped by Sgt. Mark...

Stanley Kubrick Wanted Terry Gilliam To Direct SON OF STRANGELOVE

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 11:40 AM PDT

There are certain things in this life that just do not appear to go together and - on first blush, at least - it would appear that Stanley Kubrick and sequels are two of those things. And yet Twitch has learned that at some point prior to the passing of writer Terry Southern in 1995 Kubrick had set the writer to work on a proposed sequel to Dr Strangelove. And, more than that, he had designs on setting Terry Gilliam to direct it.I had the chance to ask Gilliam about it directly earlier today at the Sitges Film Festival and here's what he had to say: I was told after Kubrick died - by someone who had been dealing with him - that he had...

Busan 2013 Review: MISS VIOLENCE Is The Hardest Watch Of The Year

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 06:00 AM PDT

There is something terrifying about the uncanny nature of Miss Violence, a film that exists in mundane reality but for its attributes is very much alien to our world.A Greek household reacts so strangely to the sudden suicide of their daughter on her birthday. The remaining family consists of grandmother, grandfather, a woman, three daughters and a son, all of varying age. The grandfather is also the carer of the woman, taking care of her two children so he also occupies a quasi-patriarch role. It is an odd composition of family that continually unnerves and upsets. Eventually the cause of the suicide is revealed and the intentions of each dysfunctional member of this horrible household becomes known. The film, like many others of its recent ilk...

Warsaw Film Festival Review: AKP: JOB 27 Is A Forgettable Yakuza Mess

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 05:00 AM PDT

There are those films that we love to re-watch over and over again because since the first time we saw them we knew that they're special in some way. Then there are those movies that we won't necessarily try to see once more even though they might've astonished us with their beauty and complexity. Unfortunately, AKP: Job 27 is in neither of these categories. The film was openly advertised as a sleek, action-packed, independent film that blends romance with a poignant story about a doomed yakuza (played by Tyce Philip Phangsoa) on a mission that might prove to be his last. Though the fact that it has no dialogues whatsoever sounded really odd at first, the overall concept seemed too good to let for such...
