If you were to tell me that you saw this collaboration coming, between Diablo Cody and Oprah Winfrey, I would have called you a damned liar. Yet, here we are and these two ladies are working together to adapt Dr. Julie Holland's upcoming book Moody Bitches for the small screen over at HBO. Cody will pen the pilot and then exec produce the show along with Oprah and her company Harpo Films.  The book, which has not yet been released, goes under the full title Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You're Taking, The Sex You're Not Having, The Sleep You're Missing and What's Really Making You Crazy and explores the pros and cons of the drugs we are being offered. I don't know if those are...

Watch Zoe Bell RAZE Some Hell In This New Trailer!

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:20 PM PST

Hey. I did not make up that bad pun. I am only repeating what this new trailer for female fighter flick Raze says at the end. Sometimes the punning is done for you, you know? Raze is due for release in a limited theatrical run on January 10th and IFC Midnight have a new trailer for drum up further interest in the film. It stars frequent Tarantino collaborator Zoe Bell and has some hardcore chick fighting throughout. Awakening after being abducted, JAMIE finds herself in a concrete bunker, and she discovers that she is not alone. She and SABRINA, a fellow abductee, both soon realize that they are in a modern day "coliseum" where, along with 48 other women, they are condemned to kill each other...

Madhuri Dixit Leads The GULAAB GANG To Bloody Vengeance In This First Look Poster

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:30 PM PST

This is a film I've been looking forward to since it was announced quite a while back. Soumik Sen's debut feature, Gulaab Gang, is making its way through production at a pretty quick clip, and in celebration of that feat, they've decided to grace their eager audience with the first official poster for the film, and HOLY SHIT it is amazing. Of the many characters played by '80s-'90s Bollywood dancing queen Madhuri Dixit, none has looked anywhere near as fierce as this image of her flying through the air in full-on sickle/hatchet hacking position. It just doesn't get much better than that.Gulaab Gang is a film based on the real like exploits of the Gulabi (Pink) Gang, a troop of pink sari-wearing female vigilantes working...

Errol Morris on Photography, Truth and JFK: NOVEMBER 22, 1963

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

Errol Morris has posted a short documentary interview with Josiah "Tink" Thompson  author of the book "Six Seconds In Dallas" (In 1966, while working for Life Magazine, he was allowed to examine a first-generation copy of the film and a set of color 35mm slides made from the original) on the nature of the photographic evidence from the various civilians taking photos and 8mm film around Dealey Plaza fifty years ago to the day, whereupon JFK was gunned down in his motorcade on a sunny afternoon.  Note that this documentary is labelled "Part 2" because it is second is a series of short documentaries produced for the New York Times. The first was released two years ago and called "The Umbrella Man."  This new one, "November...

New To Netflix: Time Travel, Memory, Cloning and BEST WORST MOVIE

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

This weeks entry of New To Netflix picks some of the obscure and strange films from the various territories around the world. At this point in time, I would say that Netflix remains at its best for the new (ish) and niche over the mainstream or canonical.  With that we have this week a tour through the Russian State Heritage Museum, a Hungarian director making a British Cloning Drama on the Black Sea Coast in Germany, Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy and and Shane Carruth's wonderful puzzler on logistics and ethics, all of which offer different cinematic forms of 'time travel.' A documentary on Troll 2, thinks about the unique pleasures of watching those kinds of 'perfect storm' of inept filmmaking.  And two crime thrillers you may...

It's A Wrap On Creature Feature STUNG

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST

Someone must have bought director Benni Diez and his Stung stars Matt O'Leary and Jessica Cook a big can of Raid to deal with the film's giant wasps because things have wrapped up. Which I supposed means O'Leary and Cook can go wash the blood off, now. A fancy garden party goes terribly wrong after a local species of wasps mutate into giant predators. It's up to Paul and Julia, two catering staffers at the high-society event, to stop the killer creatures - an effort that kickstarts a budding romance between the two.Take a look at the most recent shots from the set of the shoot below. [Full disclosure: Stung is co-produced by XYZ Films, where I'm a partner.]...

JRR Tolkien Biopic In The Works

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

JRR Tolkien is coming to the big screen. The man himself, this time, rather than just his creations. The LA Times have broken word that producer Peter Chernin is working with writer David Gleeson to develop a feature film telling the story of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings creator JRR Tolkien's life, including time spent as a soldier in the first World War, time spent as a codebreaker in WWII, his friendship with fellow authors CS Lewis (The Chronicles Of Narnia) and Charles Williams (look him up, he's amazing) and the creation of his signature works. The project is in early days yet, with no director or schedule currently in place....

Orson Welles Lost 1938 Film TOO MUCH JOHNSON Receives New York City Premiere Mon., Nov. 25, 6:30 pm!

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST

In 1934 a 19-year-old Orson Welles created his first short film Hearts Of Age, mostly seen by audiences many years later on home video. In 1938, to accompany his stage adaptation of William Gillette's 1894 play Too Much Johnson, Welles created three short films to act as prologues to each act of the play. Originally including live music and sound effects, and despite starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles himself, the three-act slapstick was never finished, and the play opened August 16, 1938, without the filmed sections. The film never received any public screenings, Welles moved on and the film was mislaid, and lost, later believed to have burned in a fire at his Spanish villa. Then, in 2012, almost 75 years after its...

NYMPHOMANIAC: Von Trier Gets His Metal On With Wildly NSFW First Trailer

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 07:17 AM PST

Lest there be any remaining doubts as to the sexual content of Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac, the first trailer is here to make things very clear in a manner that seems destined to be removed from YouTube in very short order. It's also, apparently, here to rock your ass as Lars gets his metal on. He is, after all, named Lars. After a string of clips and recent news that Von Trier had surrendered final cut of the film, this should at least soothe those worried that the shorter version may trim out the more controversial material. No chance of that now, I'd say. NYMPHOMANIAC is the wild and poetic story of a woman's journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the...

SPRING: Check The First Still And Behind The Scenes Shots From The RESOLUTION Directors' Latest

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

Directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead made quite a splash on the genre circuit with their debut feature Resolution and having wrapped up an extensive run on the festival circuit the pair have now landed in Italy where they are hard at work on their sophomore feature, Spring.I'm in a bit of a privileged position on this one as XYZ Films - where I'm a partner - is directly involved in the film, which I tend to pitch to people as the 'Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise of genre films' but here's how the creators pitch it themselves:"Spring" follows young man in a personal tailspin as he flees California to the Italian coast, where he meets a woman carrying a dark secret.Lou Taylor Pucci (The...
