Review: One-Stop Korean Revenge Shop THE FIVE Is A Bloody Good Time

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

Aside from the greats of Korean cinema - the Bong Joon-hos, Lee Chang-dongs, Im Kwon-taeks and Kim Ki-youngs - years ago, after I first immersed myself in the country's cinema, there were few things that I preferred doing than putting on a mid-level Korean genre film after a long day. Their thrillers, in particular, weren't always great (in fact a number were bad) but their production values and hard-boiled style were always a wonderful escape for me, even, strangely, a source of comfort. These days the industry still churns out a great number of thrillers, and though many are very strong, they're a different breed from those I would wile away my time with back in those days. Unexpectedly, I found that feeling again when...

The series will debut in Q1 of 2014 on Rodriguez's newly-conceived 24-hour cable channel, El Rey Network, which launches in December. El Rey is producing the 10-part drama series, with Robert Rodriguez directing the first two episodes. D.J. Cotrona (Dear John, G.I. Posted: 06 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

News coming out of AFM is that Rodney Ascher, director of the incredible conspiracy documentary of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and contributor to the forthcoming ABCs of Death 2, will direct The Nightmare for Content Film and Preferred Film & TV.The Nightmare is a disturbing investigation into the demonic visions experienced by victims of sleep paralysis and provoked by Ascher's own unsettling experiences with the condition. The documentary will be produced by Preferred's Ross M. Dinerstein (The Pact, Dark Summer) and Kevin Iwashina (Jiro Dreams of Sushi), together with Glen Zipper, producer of Oscar nominated Undefeated. Jamie Carmichael (The Pact, Black Book) will executive produce.Considering how unsettling Room 237 proved to be simply talking about a film, The Nightmare sounds like a fascinating project for...

Third FIRESTORM Trailer Pits Andy Lau Against Gordon Lam In Explosive Fashion

Posted: 06 Nov 2013 10:00 PM PST

Edko films has had a successful run of homegrown thrillers in the last couple of years, with Murderer, Nightfall and Cold War all employing big name stars in high stakes, high concept action dramas to increasingly lucrative effect at the Hong Kong box office.Firestorm, written and directed by Alan Yuen, sees Andy Lau in hardnosed cop mode, on the trail of a paticularly violent gang of robbers. Gordon Lam is the ex-con who agrees to go undercover for the cops, only to stoke the fires of those time old themes of good vs evil, right vs wrong as he finds himself increasingly at odds with Lau's cop as he is pulled deeper and deeper into a life of crime. With the release of the film only...

Focus Features Is Crumbling, And This Saddens Me

Posted: 06 Nov 2013 07:00 PM PST

Let me just preface that I am not a Hollywood business guy, nor do I possess any expertise or insight into the subject of how all this stuff works. But, I do pay close attention to which boutique labels release what kind of film, so consider this a brief commentary on just how much a film logo popping up on the big screen can stir up pleasurable endorphins when sitting down to watch a film in the cinema and how I lament the current state of where we are now in the specialty divisions of Hollywood Studios. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the Miramax Logo popped up on screen, it was a signifier of a certain kind of adult film... well...

Spike Lee's OLDBOY: Get In Shape With Josh Brolin In This New Featurette

Posted: 06 Nov 2013 06:30 PM PST

It just dawned on me that Spike Lee's version of Oldboy is set for release in the United States on November 27th, a day before Thanksgiving. Which I find to be kind of hilarious. And so I will say this is the Thanksgiving movie of 2013... Okay, that didn't go over well. But this might... A new featurette from the film that *ahem* features star Josh Brolin getting back into shape. 'Cause when you have 15 years in solitary what better way to keep sharp than to keep the flab away (I really, really want to do a Hans And Franz impression right now)....

Real Star Upendra Returns In BRAHMA, Expect The Unexpected

Posted: 06 Nov 2013 03:30 PM PST

You've probably never heard of Real Star Upendra. This man is one of the most popular film stars in Karnataka, India, and puts out some of the most insane and outlandish features in mainstream Indian cinema, the latest being the upcoming "historical romance action" film, Brahma. We've only mentioned him once on these pages, in reference to Kalpana, his remake of Tamil hit horror film Kanchana, but seeing that clip (linked below) is enough to make me a believer.Following up after Kalpana, Upendra made Topiwala. Topiwala was a modest hit at the box office, but left an amazing music video for the song Shangri La in its wake, as a reminder that Upendra is an amazing presence on screen, even in a Fat Elvis style...

Lou Taylor Pucci To Star In SPRING, The Next Film From The RESOLUTION Directors

Posted: 06 Nov 2013 02:30 PM PST

There are many fans of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's deconstructionist horror flick Resolution here at Twitch. And judging by it's mega long and successful festival run and VOD release plenty more fans out there in the rest of the world.Good news then as their next feature, entitled Spring, is well underway, with principal photography to commence later this month in Italy. And now Variety is reporting that indie mainstay Lou Taylor Pucci has boarded the project as a young Southern Californian who seeks respite in a trip to Italy... only to get involved with an unusual young woman, who will be played by German newcomer Nadia Hilker. Judging from Resolution's smart, character-based approach to big genre ideas Spring is no doubt a title to...

Destroy All Monsters: An Underappreciated Hobbit

Posted: 06 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

I'm weirdly invested in the idea that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the most underappreciated movie of last year. That's absurd, of course; there are hundreds of much better movies that received much worse reviews, or much less attention, than a multi-hundred-million-dollar fantasy blockbuster from Warner Brothers that made a billion bucks worldwide and garnered a tepid, but hardly vicious, Tomato score. In the pantheon of movies where the empirical narrative has overtaken what actually happened at the time, though (see also: Superman Returns), The Hobbit (Part 1) is one of those movies that is largely looked upon as a disappointment. By any yardstick, I guess it was; but then, for The Hobbit to fail to do anything other than set the entire moviegoing...
