Chilean director Patricio Vallarades had himself quite a cult hit on his hands with the original Chilean version of extreme horror picture Hidden In The Woods, enough so that he ended up directing an English language version of the picture earlier this year with Michael Biehn in the lead. Tokyo 2013 Interview: Watanabe Hirobumi, The Not-So-Foolish Piggy, Talks AND THE MUD SHIP SAILS AWAY

Posted: 03 Nov 2013 04:00 PM PST

And the Mud Ship Sails Away is an entertaining indie comedy set in Tochigi prefecture, a few hours north of Tokyo. It stars Shibukawa Kiyohiko as Takashi, an unemployed, unmotivated slob who one day gets a visit from a girl claiming to be his dead father's daughter. The film is directed by Watanabe Hirobumi and is the first film made under his own production company Foolish Piggies Films. The film was made with a crew of just four and with a cast of friends and family, including the director's own 96-year-old grandmother and with his brother and company co-founder, Yuji. I sat down with the director to talk about the film and his new production company. In the program notes it says you made the most 'Tochigi-esque'...

Viennale 2013 Review: I USED TO BE DARKER, A Worthwile Drifter Film Without Too Much Movement

Posted: 03 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST

With Matthew Porterfield, it is all about drifting and floating, just that there is not much travelling going on. A dreamy feeling of detachment conquers I Used To Be Darker and makes it a cinematographic pleasure. Undoubtedly the film does not get rid of its clichés dealing with a family in crisis and Porterfield has been less conventional before, but there is an honesty about the characters that makes the director's latest, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, a captivating picture. There are four protagonists in a story about a dysfunctional family and their ways of dealing with separation of certain kinds. Northern Irish teenager Taryn escapes from her European home and a failed love affair, arriving at the home of her aunt Kim,...

Review: IMAGINE Uses Sounds To Create A Heartwarming Story Of Self-Discovery

Posted: 03 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

Imagine is a fascinating and touching film, a somewhat experimental piece that makes perfect use of everyday sounds, intensifying their overall contribution to the storyline in order to create an eerily claustrophobic, yet truly inviting universe. Through a heart-pleasing and deeply intimate story about blind people and their struggle to find a safe place in the community that's more or less indifferent to their situation Andrzej Jakimowski, the director of the picture, lets the viewers, especially all those who are perfectly able to see, experience how essential to our lives are the noises that we hear on a daily basis but not necessarily attach importance to.Jakimowski envisions his characters in a professional, very prestigious center for blind people right in the heart of a small, lively...

Camera Japan 2013 Review: BURNING BUDDHA MAN Puts Paper On Fire

Posted: 03 Nov 2013 07:05 AM PST

(Just when you thought Japanese films couldn't get any crazier...) This year, the Camera Japan Festival in Rotterdam had a particularly nice anime section, and the film Burning Buddha Man was part of it. However, a case can be made that this title does not count as an anime. Technically speaking, what you're seeing is paper cut-out puppetry which is live-action rather than animation. Then again, Burning Buddha Man is crazy enough not to count as part of anything anyway, and drawings do make up most of the film, so the programmers are probably forgiven. This is a science-fiction fantasy horror action film, and a gory one as well, made with paper cut-out dolls. It's fair to say that first-time director Ujicha (one name only)...
