Trailer: "We're Tryin' To Build Something" - TREME Makes A Welcome Return

"It's about culture, family, and tradition." - Antoine Batiste.Treme is one of the most extraordinary works of reality-based fiction ever filmed, and also one of the most under appreciated. While it took many seasons for The Wire to reach its near mythic status, David Simon's follow-up series may be an even greater masterpiece. The intertwining tales of love, food, music and hardship uses NOLA as the heart of this compelling narrative.Returning for a truncated final season, the work is at least given the dignity of a denouement, unlike the other underloved HBO classic, Deadwood. In this trailer, you get a sense of what the show is, but I strongly encourage you to dig into it from the beginning, and let its unique mix of documentary, recreation...

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE: International Trailer Brings The Sexy Ennui

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:30 PM PST

Jim Jarmusch is at his most Jarmuschian as he envisions immortal vampires who have seen it all, have traversed around all the urban centres of the world before settling in old Detroit; as gothic a place as one might find in America in 2013. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston listen to rock and roll, talk science, art and cuddle in the dark before a spunky Mia Wasikowska comes along to break up the oh-so-romantic ennui. I believe it is fair to say that the trailer here captures the tone of the film pretty well, right down to the spinning record, and the jet-setting. One of the strengths about this particular take on the vampire is that it is not in any hurry to get anywhere, and that...

Review: SUSHI: THE GLOBAL CATCH Tells Us Why We Should Eat Sushi Responsibly

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

The title of Mark Hall's first feature documentary might be somewhat misleading to all the viewers who got so accustomed to watching artistic, eye-pleasing but not entirely memorable foodie pictures. Sushi: The Global Catch is not as much about sushi in itself as it is about making people all over the world aware of the dangers caused by excessive fishing capacity for different kinds of fish, mostly bluefin tuna. Though strictly one-sided in the approach to the presented topic, the film does make a convincing and really worrisome point. What begins as a historical journey into the sushi-making business, deliciously beautified with mouthwatering imagery reminiscent of Jiro Dreams of Sushi, soon turns into an insightful and earnest commentary on the state of the fishing industry, shown from...

Anime Limited Debuts English-Friendly PERFECT BLUE Blu-ray This Month

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST

Perfect Blue, a film that many consider to be filmmaker Kon Satoshi's masterpiece, will make its English-friendly Blu-ray debut on November 18 from UK distributor Anime Limited. The film has already seen release on Blu in Japan and Taiwan, but neither of those releases have English audio or subtitles, so this is a big deal for fans of great films.Scotland's Anime Limited is a new company, only having released their first discs in 2013, but they're certainly swinging for the fences in terms of acquisition titles. Not only are they doing Perfect Blue, but they've already released the Cowboy Bebop series on Blu-ray and have planned releases for early Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters Per Second, Children Who Chase Lost Voices) films, The Place Promised in...

SCINTILLA: Watch The Trailer For Billy O'Brien's Reunion With ISOLATION Star John Lynch

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

It was all the back in 2005 that Irish director Billy O'Brien turned heads at the Toronto International Film Festival with mutant cow film Isolation - a film which managed to turn its very odd premise into one of the more effective and atmospheric horror films of its year. A lot of that was due to O'Brien, of course, and a great deal also with the solid performance from leading man John Lynch and the duo are back together now with Scintilla.A double cross left mercenary Jim Powell (John Lynch) in a hellhole African prison. Now his release has been paid for by a corporate sponsor, but only to be given a new, even more dangerous job. Powell is hired to lead a team deep...

DOCSDF 2013: Albert Maysles' Master Class In Top Quotes & Photos

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

Co-director of such classic documentaries as Salesman, Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens, plus cinematographer for D.A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop), Jean-Luc Godard (Six in Paris) and Martin Scorsese (Shine a Light), Albert Maysles is simply a living cinema treasure. Turning 87 this month (November 26), the older of the Maysles brothers has more than a hundred credits in his impressive filmography and still directs and shoots. Paying tribute to this, the documentary film festival DOCSDF organized a Maysles brothers mini retrospective for its 2013 edition, showing three of their films (What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A, Salesman and Gimme Shelter) and inviting Albert to Mexico City. I had the fortune to attend one of the Albert Maysles DOCSDF events: his master class at CCC (a...
