Twitch's Best of 2013 - Best Blu-ray Release Posted: 16 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST The year that was 2013 has almost run its course, so the time has come for Team Twitch to pool its ever-growing troupe of contributors from the four corners of the planet, gather its collective thoughts and pay special tribute to those films that have made a particularly strong impact over the past twelve months. While we are all avid cinema and festival-goers here at Twitch, we also love to indulge in the increasingly compulsive and fetishistic pastime that is purchasing and collecting our favourite movies on Blu-ray, for repeat consumption in the privacy of our own homes. 2013 has proved something of a landmark year, both in terms of AV quality, supplementary features and the packaging itself. Listed below are just a few of our... |
Watch Destructive Youth Raise Some Hell in The Trailer For Polish Indie HARDKOR DISKO Posted: 16 Dec 2013 02:30 PM PST Transition to adulthood is never an easy task and the heroes of an upcoming Polish film Hardkor Disko (Hardcore Disco) are about to learn it the hard way. Krzysztof Skonieczny (famous music video director) is going to explore the darkest and the most depressing side of that difficult change in his feature debut. Hardkor Disko is a completely independent film about the struggles of the youth in an environment that's totally hostile and unpredictable. First trailer offers some great visuals, penetrating music, nudity, violence, all accompanied by a sombre atmosphere and a creepy monologue that begins with the words: If you had a choice, would you prefer to burn or freeze to death? The official synopsis hints at a lot of contrasting emotions: HARDKOR DISKO is a story about... |
KILL THE RAPIST Trailer: India Enters The Rape-Revenge Pig-Pile Posted: 16 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST One year ago today, a college student was gang-raped in New Delhi, India, in a case that grabbed the world's attention. The woman, nicknamed Nirbhaya, died as a result of the gruesome injuries inflicted by the six men who assaulted her on the bus that night. The case set off international protest and sparked the long-needed domestic discussion in India about protecting women's safety and rights in the face of corrupt justice and lax police protection. In addition to the political protestations, Indian celebrities of all stripes vociferously decried the long-ignored problem and vowed to put their energies toward a solution.Very shortly after the murder of Nirbhaya, iRock Films India announced the title Kill the Rapist as one of their films in active production. Perhaps a... |

Zambia Heads For The Moon In AFRONAUTS Posted: 16 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST While most of the attention around the Sundance lineup has gone to the feature programs there are - as always - a number of fascinating titles to be found among the short film selections, among them Frances Bodomo's Afronauts.July 1969. It's the night of the moon landing. And a ragtag group of Zambian exiles are trying to beat America to the moon.Yep, it's a period set alternate history of the space race. And the trailer - embedded below - is a really striking piece of work. Check it out.... |

Catch A Glimpse Of One Man's Heroic True Story In The First Trailer For JACK STRONG Posted: 16 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Wladyslaw Pasikowski (Psy, Psy 2, screenwriter for Katyn) is undoubtedly one of the most interesting Polish directors working today. This year he shocked the world with a downright controversial Poklosie, which was meant to unveil the atrocious part of Poland's turbulent past. His latest venture into the country's history will be a thriller based on a true story of Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski (played by Marcin Dorocinski), who tried to do the impossible and stop the Soviets all by himself during the Cold War. This riveting tale of heroism is hailed by many as one of the most fascinating spy stories of the modern world. Here's the synopsis:A spy thriller telling a historically based story of a man who alone dares to challenge Soviets being in the middle... |

BANKS, and Peter O'Toole Posted: 16 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Today marks the loss of one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history, who rocketed to fame in one of the finest films ever made. Also as we were hitting air we learned about the passing of Joan Fontaine, star of Hitchcock's Rebecca and Suspicion. Also chatted about the second Hobbit film, and about Disney's latest mythmaking surrounding its founding father with Saving Mr. BanksAs a bonus, there's a video from earlier this week where talk of Golden Globes took place, including talk about Rush, 12 Years A Slave, Gravity, Treme, and more.... |
Korean Box Office: Jeon Do-yeon No Match for THE HOBBIT Posted: 16 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST Despite a major new local release, the Korean film industry was held at bay once again as the pairing of Jeon Do-yeon and Ko Soo wasn't enough to prevent the new Hobbit from taking first place. 2.24 million tickets were sold over the frame, about 10% over last year, but the local market share, due to a soft opening and a lack of strong holdovers, was weak at 28%. In 1952 she appeared in the epic Ivanhoe, cast beside Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor in the retelling of the Walter Scott tale. Her last credited appearance... |

That fusion of influences is what drives Killers, the sophomore effort by Indonesian directing duo The Mo Brothers (Macabre). The story of two men drawn to violence who discover one another on the internet, Killers will soon make its debut at Sundance and in the lead up to its premiere the Japanese backers - Nikkatsu - have released a bloody new trailer.
