The Director Of DIE FARBE Returns To Lovecraft With THE DREAMLANDS Posted: 07 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST Director Huan Vu raised quite a stir amongst fans of HP Lovecraft a little while back with his independent film Die Farbe, a very well received adaptation of Lovecraft's story The Color Out Of Space. Well, Vu is back and once again tackling Lovecraft, this time with The Dreamlands adapted from Lovecraft's Dream Cycle. Things are still very early days and there is a crowd funding campaign planned but Vu and his team have created a first proof of concept teaser to whet the appetite. Check it out below.... |
Review: THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, A Hell Of A Ride Posted: 07 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST When last year's The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey hit, I addressed the central question being asked by most fans of the Lord of the Rings films: "How could something so relatively slight, an explicitly childish work that's little more than a richly populated retelling of the Beowulf myth, live up to the scope of the LOTR trilogy?"I argued that the first Hobbit film did exactly what it needed to do, resetting the stage for another set of films, similar works with obvious echoes but very much their own pieces of the puzzle. This is a mighty journey, so there's bound to be a considerable amount of baggage. For many, the first Hobbit film felt superfluous, and talk of the expansion of the slight novel was... |
Review: Time Travel Takes A Siesta At 11:00 AM Posted: 07 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST Setting aside the barnstorming success of Bong Joon-ho's new feature Snowpiercer, an anomaly if ever there was one, Korean cinema's relationship to the science fiction genre has been a difficult one over the years. Successful mash-ups like Save the Green Planet (2003) and The Host (2006) hinted at what the industry might achieve, but by and large, the straight sci-fis that have been produced, such as 2009: Lost Memories (2002), Yesterday (2002) and Natural City (2003), have failed to impress. However, 11:00 AM, a new Korean sci-fi film that made its way into local theaters late this year, held the faintest glimmer of hope for what can, at times, be one of cinema's most rewarding genres. Alas, this new effort follows previous domestic stabs that... |
William Friedkin's SORCERER Celebrated In Paris Before Its Worldwide Release Posted: 07 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST A few months after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the restored version of William Friedkin's resurrected masterpiece Sorcerer was screened in Paris at La Cinémathèque Française as the opening film of the 2nd edition of 'Toute la Mémoire du Monde', an international festival devoted to recently restored films. The award-winning director William Friedkin, guest of honor of this five day festival (Oct. 3-8, 2013), came to Paris not only to present the dark 'nitro-thriller' Sorcerer, an original variation of Clouzot's classic Wages Of Fear ( "I asked his permission to do another version of it, not a remake") that he considers his favorite of his own movies ("It is for me the most important film I ever made"), but also, since the Cinemathèque... |
Review: BRO'S BEFORE HO'S Is Roaring Rude Fun With A Heart Posted: 07 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST (Because deep inside even the biggest asshole, there is a romantic trying to get out ... ehm ... no wait, let me rephrase that...) The New Kids may have been disbanded after the huge successes of New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro, but the actors, writers, and directors behind them still exist, of course, and they are a uniquely talented bunch. What would come next? Back in March, directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil announced that their next was going to be -- surprise -- a romantic comedy. Most of the former New Kids actors would be in it too, albeit in totally different roles, and no longer as an ensemble. Fast forward to this week, and the premiere of Bro's Before... |
