Imagine 2014: First Trailer For Dutch Horror THE POOL

Posted: 20 Feb 2014 02:00 AM PST

A small pool in a forest may contain a bad secret or two, in the Dutch horror thriller The Pool (De Poel), directed by Chris W. Mitchell. He also co-wrote the script with starring actor Gijs Scholten van Aschat, who scores his first writing credit here. The Pool is described as a typically Dutch horror film, with a psychological twist. Its synopsis: Two families go camping illegally in a forest, and set up their tents near a beautiful pond, far away from the daily hubbub. However, they soon discover that the pond contains a mysterious force, which will not allow them to leave. Rot and decay strike, and madness follows. The production tweets jokingly mention plot points about horny teenagers, belligerent parents, and a bog...

Trailer: Polish War Drama STONES FOR THE RAMPART

Posted: 20 Feb 2014 01:30 AM PST

Poland's tempestuous history is a collection of many uniquely chilling and tragic chapters and a never-ending bag of courageous stories. For decades, it served as an inspiration for many more or less successful pictures. However, this trend has also lead to a series of recent jokes that slightly criticize Polish cinema for it's inability to go beyond history/war genre films.Robert Glinski's Stones For The Rampart (Kamienie na Szaniec) evidently follows the crowd. Since the book that it's based on is shelved as required reading for Polish school children, most Poles are already familiar with this affecting tale of bravery, honor and patriotism. Only time will tell whether people still find it interesting enough to revisit. The trailer gives the impression that Stones For The Rampart will...

FANTASTIC FOUR Casting Rumors Heat Up

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 09:35 PM PST

The latest Fantastic Four casting rumors claim, essentially, that the cast is set. According to The Wrap, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) will play Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch), confirming rumors that have been floating around for quite a while. Kate Mara (House of Cards) is in final negotiations to play his sister Sue Storm (aka the Invisible Woman). Casting Jordan and Mara as siblings would be a splendid example of color-blind casting; if this happens, I hope the movie doesn't bother to explain anything about it. Jamie Bell, a new name, is in "heavy discussions" to play Ben Grimm (aka The Thing). Reportedly, Miles Teller remains the top choice to star as Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), with his Sundance hit Whiplash increasing...

Watch The Theatrical Trailer For Bruce McDonald's THE HUSBAND

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 12:30 PM PST

Starting its theatrical run March 14 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, Twitch was proud to present the first teaser from Bruce McDonald's ultra black comedy The Husband just a few days ago and that's now been followed up by the official theatrical trailer. Here's how TIFF described the film when it played the festival back in September:Henry, the hero of Bruce McDonald's gutsy The Husband, is having a really bad year. His wife, Alyssa, a former teacher, is in jail for sleeping with a fourteen-year-old student, leaving Henry to raise their infant son alone. He loathes his ad agency job -- and his co-workers even more. Moreover, the burden of single-parenting has essentially cut Henry off from his friends, leaving him to stew....

Marxists And Feminists Despair! CAPTAIN FALCON Is Coming To Save The Day! Check The First Images Now!

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 11:30 AM PST

Imagine, if you will, that some crazy person had the equally crazy idea to take the technicolor tone of classic TV superheros such as The Green Hornet and the Adam West Batman and re-invent them in the 'service' of fascism. The crazy person in question is Portuguese writer-director Joao Leitao and his very much tongue-in-cheek creation Captain Falcon (Capitao Falcao). We first caught wind of Leitao's brilliantly daft creation back in September of 2011 when he released a promo trailer for a proposed Captain Falcon TV series - you can check that below - and when that series fell apart at the eleventh hour with the network pulling the plug just weeks before it was due to go into production, Leitao snatched victory from the...

Nas to Open Tribeca 2014 with TIME IS ILLMATIC

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST

It's been 20 years since Queensbridge rapper Nas hit the hip hop world in the head with the release of his album Illmatic, one of the most important releases in the golden "2Pac/Biggie era" of rap. Multimedia artist One9 has directed a documentary chronicling the impact of that album and this morning, the good folks at the Tribeca Film Festival announced that film, Time is Illmatic, will open their 2014 festival (which runs from April 16 to 27). What's more, Nas plans to perform the entire Illmatic album from front to back after the April 16 premiere. Here's some more info on the film: Time Is Illmatic traces Nas's influences and the insurmountable odds he faced in creating the greatest work of music from hip-hop's...

Watch The Full UK Trailer For Richard Ayoade's THE DOUBLE

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST

We are unabashed fans of UK writer-director-performer Richard Ayoade in these parts, having been won over by his comic performances in Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, The IT Crowd and others back in the days before he shifted his focus to work behind the camera. Ayoade's debut film as a director, Submarine, was an outright charmer while his sophomore picture The Double is an altogether darker beast that nonetheless won us over wholeheartedly when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new...

DVD Review: Urasawa Naoki's MONSTER, Episodes 16-30

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST

(Secret societies are all fun and games, until someone starts planning a genocide...) Last weekend, the whole world seemed to be watching marathon sessions of House of Cards when its second season arrived on Netflix. Not me though: I had some thriller binge-viewing to do of my own, courtesy of a package I had just received in the mail. In it: the second DVD-set, out of a planned five, for the anime series Monster. It will be in shops from today onward, and despite of the series being almost ten years old, this marks the first time these episodes have been released on DVD, WITH English dub and subs, anywhere in the world. My review of the first discset last month was pretty damn positive,...

FAERYVILLE: Doors Opening Soon!

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST

I've been to Faeryville, and it's one heck of a ride. One Singapore filmmaker is standing out from the rest of the pack with his works, avoiding the tried and tested successful formulae that makes it big at the local box office, opting instead to forge his own independent path down the fantastical realms that genre films can offer. With medium length films like [e'TZAINTES], V1K1 - A Techno Fairytale, and A Wicked Tale, the latter arguably his most successful and acclaimed work to date, Tzang Merwyn Tong has now come full circle with his first feature film called Faeryville, set in an eco-system deceptively modelled as a college.Last year, Tzang debuted a work-in-progress cut codenamed FRVL at the South-east Asian Film Festival in Singapore, and had wickedly left the audience with...

With the latest installment of RoboCop we once again find the world of this famed cyborg character providing a rich palate for contemporary political discourse. We talk about the 1987 original, the newest film in the series, as well as the two other filmed versions that all in their own ways stretched the Frankenstein-meets-Orwell nature of the character. As a bonus, the clip was filmed with gratuitous shots of palm trees in the background....

Rialto Pictures To Release GODZILLA: THE JAPANESE ORIGINAL In April

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST

On its 60th anniversary Rialto Pictures will debut a new restoration of the uncut version of Honda Ishirô's landmark 1954 monster movie, Godzilla. Under the new title of Godzilla: The Japanese Original Rialto will debut the film at the TCM Classic Film Festival on April 12th. Then the film will start to screen around America starting in New York at Film Forum from the 18th through the 24th. The original GODZILLA holds up as one of the greatest science fiction/monster films ever made, boasting still-impressive special effects, as the radiation-breathing prehistoric monster, awakened after millennia by Hydrogen Bomb testing - and impervious to repeated shelling by the Japanese army - wreaks destruction on Tokyo. The original film was chopped and butchered before it screened in America under...
