Review: CUBAN FURY Is Less Than The Sum Of Its Parts

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 05:30 PM PST

Romantic comedies have hit a bit of a slump in recent years, at least ones from big Hollywood and UK studios. The same patterns, cliched images, characters, and formulas have become predictable and dull. And in many ways, Cuban Fury doesn't escape this trap: a guy wants a girl who is out of his league, so must find a hook with which to compete with an obvious jerk in order to win the girl's heart. It's somewhat redeemed by good performances, a few scenes of witty banter and a non-traditional conclusion, but ultimately falls a bit flat.Bruce (Nick Frost) is a former teenage salsa champion who let a bad encounter ruin his childhood dream. Twenty-five years later, he falls for his new boss Julia (Rashida Jones),...

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 03:00 PM PST

Labeled as a gift from HBO to the faithful followers, the Game of Thrones new exhibition kicked off yesterday in Mexico City and will last until Wednesday (2/19). However, there are no tickets left for today or the next three days as 18,000 lucky Mexican fans reserved all the available admissions weeks ago.    More than 100 original artifacts from the series, including costumes, weapons and models, compose the exhibition, with the Iron Throne being the only replica. Fans are in for a real treat as the showing also brings Will Simpson's storyboards, a virtual reality "Ascend the Wall" interactive experience, and even a really cool dragon head from the upcoming fourth season. The Kids Talk Film: DUNE

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 12:30 PM PST

Jodorowsky's Dune, in all its crazy ambition, may never have come into existence, but in the early 1980s, David Lynch, after turning down the job of directing the second Star Wars sequel, then titled Revenge of the Jedi, got the go ahead to make a big budget blockbuster out of Frank Herbert's sprawling novel. The resulting film has befuddled and confounded audiences in the ensuing three decades, and has also achieved a significantly passionate cult following. Willem (age 10) and Miranda (age 9) return to offer you an enthusiastic young perspective about the strangest of science fiction studio films. The marathon extended version with Alan Smithee given director's credit here is what they watched, and while they get a bit *SPOILERY* at times, there is far too much plot to make that...

However, we've got a number of gems in this column that are available in the various red-envelope territories if the upscale 'TV' telling of dirty American politics by way of Shakespeare is not your thing....

The 13th edition of Documentary Fortnight, the Museum of Modern Art's annual showcase of documentary features, short films, and installations, screens from February 14-28. The wide-ranging, international selection, as always, is very impressive, featuring films that are innovative, beautifully made, and challenging. These films often make use of dramatic, performance, and narrative techniques that are usually associated more with fictional features, expanding the documentary form and challenging the boundaries between nonfiction and fictional narratives. Contemporary art installation techniques also fascinatingly intersect with documentary practice in some of the films featured in this year's festival.Click through the gallery below to read capsule reviews of some notable films selected; for more information on these and other films in the festival, visit MoMA's website....
