Sure, it's a film about building blocks, but The LEGO Movie proves to have all the right pieces. It's a tonne of fun, and easily one of the best films of 2014.Also chatted about the disappointing The Monuments Men, a film with both heart and ambition but one that falls completely flat by the end....

Censurados Film Festival Lifts The Ban On Good Filmmaking

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 12:00 PM PST

In 2011, Jafar Panahi's This Is Not a Film played at Cannes, after having been smuggled out of Iran on a USB stick hidden in a cake. The director himself was imprisoned in his home by the government and banned from making movies. Back in 1939, the kissing scenes between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind were questioned by censors. Twenty years after that, in 1960, the shower scene in Psycho was also censored after being deemed morally unacceptable. These and many other examples show that censorship has been an ever-present obstacle to overcome for both filmmakers and filmgoers. That's the focus of the Censurados Film Festival, one in a long line of fests which have recently sprung up in Peru...

Watch OTHER, A Powerful Short Film About Body Horror

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 11:00 AM PST

Body horror is a sticky subject. No, really. I wasn't just making a bad pun. In the wrong hands, attempts at stories of this kind can be simply disgusting. But when it is done well, body horror can yield evocative results. Brandon Cronenberg rocked audiences at Fantastic Fest a couple of years ago conjuring up his father David's spirit with the striking Antiviral (2011), and fellow Canadian Jesse T. Cook got even more gooey with Septic Man (2012) the following year. There are plenty of other examples, but it seems a lot of folks are thinking along the same bloodlines. Enter Daniel Delpurgatorio. If you've heard of him, odds are it was his contribution to the long form version of Zac Snyder's Watchmen (2009) that afforded him...

Scarlett Johansson In New UNDER THE SKIN Trailer Unnerves At Cellular Level

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST

As we draw closer to the theatrical release of Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin, the trailers are becoming more detailed and yet remain opaque. Here's the official synopsis: "An alien seductress preys upon hitchhikers in Scotland." That it's! But that's all you really need, isn't it, with Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) in the director's chair, Scarlett Johansson as the alien, and a new trailer that unnerves at a cellular level. The film opens in UK cinemas on March 14; in the U.S., it opens first in New York and Los Angeles on April 4 before expanding across the country on April 11....

Berlinale 2014: Laying Bare The NYMPHOMANIAC Director's Cut

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 09:30 AM PST

Lars von Trier swore a vow of silence after his controversial remarks at 2011's Cannes Film Festival. You may recall him comparing himself, tongue firmly in cheek, to a Nazi during the Melancholia press conference and the whole thing then spinning wildly out of proportion. But that's another story. Now at another festival promoting another film, he is pictured with duct tape covering his mouth in press stills, and though joining for the cast photo-call, he was a no-show for the press conference that followed. (Don't worry, ye seekers of scandal, Shia LaBeouf picked up his slack.) Despite von Trier's loudly stated silence, Nymphomaniac is not without controversy of its own. Both theatrical versions, split in half and sheered to scale by pragmatic minded producers, released...

Review: ROBOCOP, A Decent-Enough Reboot

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 08:45 AM PST

Way back in 1987, a non-American director came to these shores to make a film that worked as both an explosive and violent action film, but also a cautionary tale about militarism of our police forces and the growing fascism in both our political and judicial systems under President Ronald Reagan. Sure, the majority of the audience missed the social commentary (this then 15-year-old included), but what we got with the original RoboCop was what most great sci-fi or near-future works do: give the audience some ideas to chew on, and let them enjoy an excellent time while these ideas percolate throughout the film.Paul Verhoeven's vision is a bleak one, to be sure, and his Starship Troopers took it to an even more logical, disturbing,...

Hooray For Hollywood! A Contract Is Better Than A Handshake (But Only Just)

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST

For this, our second installment in this exercise of my disabusing you all of the notions of cinematic high art in favor of the realities of the movie business of it all, I thought I would answer one of the questions put to me by you lot: "Why so many lawyers? Why aren't things standardized?" (Okay, so it's two questions, but they came as a package-deal and they are, in fact, joined at the hip for all intents and purposes.) The first question is the easier to answer because the second question (or, more accurately, its inverse) IS the answer: there are a ton of lawyers because nothing is standardized. See? Easy! Now for the second question, why aren't things standardized? (I'll resist the urge...

Exclusive: Watch The First 5 Minutes Of Vincenzo Natali's HAUNTER

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 06:00 AM PST

Vincenzo Natali's Haunter hits home video today (Tuesday, February 11), and we've got the first five minutes to tempt you. Here's the official synopsis: The film stars Abigail Breslin in director Vincenzo Natali's (Splice, Cube, ABCs of Death 2) unique take on the traditional haunted house story. In 1986, 15-year-old Lisa (Breslin) and her family died in their home under sinister circumstances. Unable to move on, their spirits have continued to roam the house. And for nearly 30 years, they have had to live the same miserable day over and over, never thinking they're anything but alive. The Hollywood Reporter aptly called the film: "a clever, supernatural take on Groundhog Day." It was also an Official Selection at the 2013 SXSW festival. Our own Eric...
