Upcoming APPLESEED ALPHA Film Will Be A Reboot-Slash-Prequel

Masamune Shirow's manga "Appleseed" has been adapted for the cinema several times already, and according to IGN.com, this summer we can add a new one: Appleseed Alpha. Details are sketchy, but apparently this is a "reboot" taking place before the previous films, with female supersoldier Deunan and her cyborg friend Briareos still traveling through a post-war wasteland, looking for the city Olympia. Sounds like a prequel to the previous two films, rather than a reboot, but it can (of course) be both. As evidenced by the first screenshot seen above, this will once again be a cg-animated film. Aramaki Shinji, who also directed Appleseed and Appleseed: Ex Machina, will take the helm. The production is in the hands of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Lucent...

First Trailer For THE PURGE: ANARCHY Throws Fear Outside

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 11:30 AM PST

Last year's The Purge set up a fairly ridiculous premise for what amounted to a home-invasion movie, but it brought in big bucks at the box office, especially in comparison to its modest budget, and so a sequel is forthcoming. As our own Eric D. Snider explained in his review of the first film: The premise is that in the not-too-distant future, America has almost no unemployment and very little crime. (No, that's not the implausible part.) What either led to this or is how it is maintained -- the movie isn't clear on which came first -- is The Purge, where all crime, including murder, is legalized once a year for 12 hours. During that time, you can do whatever you want (using up...

IFFR 2014 Review: IN DARKNESS WE FALL Does Not Stumble

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 08:01 AM PST

(In a cave, everyone can hear you scream...) While there is generally a dearth of genre films at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, on occasion we do get the odd treat or two. This year the festival had a bona-fide World Premiere with the Spanish horror-thriller La Cueva ("The Cave"), which has a somewhat more original title in English with In Darkness We Fall. Spain has both a long history of genre cinema, as well as a constant recent trickle of great titles. Time will tell if this is one of them, but it sure is too well-made to simply disregard. The Story: In Darkness We Fall starts off easy. We see self-shot camera footage of five friends going on a holiday on a small,...

BRICK MANSIONS Trailer: Watch Paul Walker And David Belle Run Around

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 07:32 AM PST

So. What we have here is the trailer for Brick Mansions the English remake of Luc Besson's 2004 French parkour action film Banlieue 13 (District 13). The story moves from the streets of Paris to Detroit. The elements appear to be pretty much the same. A walled in city within the city, full of corruption and crime. The ex-con with good intentions drawn into a conflict when his much more attractive sister is kidnapped. And the cop who goes in to save the day, all the time at odds with his new 'partner'. Brick Mansions was directed by Camille Delamarre, a long time editor of some of Besson's other screenplays. He will direct the next Transporter flick. In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better...

Destroy All Monsters: Girls and LEGO

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST

Major spoilers for The LEGO Movie follow. If you don't want to read about the ending, bookmark for later! So girls can't play with LEGO? That's the takeaway from The LEGO Movie, a takeaway which I thought was just a piece of malignant subtext until the film's final moments, where The LEGO Movie went ahead and made it text. Everything is awesome, use your imagination - just don't let your sister play. Her imagination sucks. The toy industry must be one of the most rigorously gender-separated subsets in popular culture, and it's hiding in plain sight. The messaging isn't even subtle; whole toy stores are bisected down the middle with an invisible Berlin Wall. It's the great toy store divide, across which no child shall...
