Yubari 2014: Catch ABCS OF DEATH 2 Runners-Up And AUDITION's Shiina Eihi Posted: 26 Feb 2014 01:03 AM PST Kicking off tomorrow, the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival is a revelrous microcosm of the weird and wonderful that Japan cinema has to offer. And right at the heart of the festivities, there's always an anarchic celebration of all things extra extra crazy by splattermeister Nishimura Yoshihiro. This year he has again been gifted one of the festival screening venues for an entire day of oddball programming.Among the highlights this year, Nishimura will be screening (for the first and perhaps only time) a selection of short films that contended for the coveted 26th spot in The ABCs Of Death 2, currently in post-production. Ably assisted by the film's co-producer, Marc Walkow, Nishimura will be giving some of the best entries in the "M Is For..."... |
First Trailer For Mizui Maki's Abduction Drama KEPT Posted: 25 Feb 2014 06:00 PM PST Due to have its world premiere at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival later this week, before playing in competition at Boston Underground Film Festival on 28 March, we get a first look at Kept, the debut feature from Mizui Maki.Mizui, who worked as assistant to Sono Sion and then Nishimura Yoshihiro, purportedly based the script on her own personal experiences as a sex crime victim. The story follows a young woman (played by original AKB48 member Kayano, who is abducted by a serial rapist, only to forge a strange relationship with her attacker and escape unharmed. But when the attacks continue she faces persecution and guilt for not reporting her own experience to the police.Nishimura also serves as a producer on Kept, together with... |

Trailer: GODZILLA Is Pure Gravitas Posted: 25 Feb 2014 11:00 AM PST Woah. And... woah...The new trailer for Gareth Edwards' take on Godzilla arrived today and it sure knows how to instill a bit of fear in the hearts of us measly mammals. Over some starkly terrifying shots of destroyed cities we've got a bit of Bryan Cranston demanding answers for what was "not an earthquake or typhoon." As the images build, sprinkling more human faces into the disaster, Ken Watanabe actually gives reference to Godzilla's origins, and I mean he says "1954". Chills, people, chills. But what is so impressive about this trailer is that Edwards has created a sense of scale and space that is really awe inspiring and unsettling, putting perspective on how small we really are, not just in the universe, but on... |
Bullets, Blades And Fists Fly In The Trailer For James Lee's SECOND LIFE Posted: 25 Feb 2014 10:30 AM PST Maylasia's James Lee doesn't appear to know how to take a break. Hugely prolific, with his work crossing multiple genre boundaries with his career bouncing back and forth between indie and studio work, Lee has taken a step back from features of late but that doesn't mean he's not still working at his customary pace. Nope, it's just that now he's focusing on a series of ultra low budget shorts films that he's releasing for free on his YouTube channel as a sort of exercise to prove to the local industry that there's more than one way to do things. And the results have been interesting.Take, for example, his latest offering, the trailer for an action short film titled Second Life. Yes, the budget limits... |
The Kids Talk Film: THE FOUNTAIN Posted: 25 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST On the eve of Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic, Noah, Twitch's two film loving children, Willem (age 10) and Miranda (age 9) return to offer you a couple pairs of young eyes on Aronofsky's confounding, elliptical 2006 science fiction picture, The Fountain. They talk about making the most of your time on earth, reincarnation, supernovas, and because nobody suspects it, the Spanish Inquisition. Twitch has been on the Internet long enough that many of its writing staff have children old enough to understand and consume media in a way that is both raw and fresh. It might even come with an inkling of consideration afterwards -- it's true that many of us fall in love with the movies when we are very young. Thus,... |
Watch The First Trailer For Quirky Japanese Dramedy DOG'S WAY Posted: 25 Feb 2014 09:30 AM PST Another one for the "only in Japan" file! Definitely bizarre in its own fascinating way, Dog's Way (Inu Michi) tells the story of a relationship between a man (Masayuki Yano) and a woman (Nagayama Yurie) who voluntarily becomes his dog. Manda Kunitoshi, the film's director, has won two prizes at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival for his absorbing, but peculiar drama Unloved. If you're by any chance familiar with Sugiura Akiyoshi's weird and cute 2007 comedy Cat Girl Kiki the premise of this movie might not surprise you as much as it should. Then again, this means that you watch too many Japanese films, just like we do.This is what the festival's official website says about Dog's Way: Kyoko feels unsatisfied with her ordinary days although she has a job... |
Rotterdam 2014 Review: JACKY IN THE KINGDOM OF WOMEN Is Absurd, Rude And Very Funny Posted: 25 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST (Just imagine: what if Charlotte Gainsbourg had played a nymphomaniac in THIS film..!) One of the prizes to be won at the international Film Festival Rotterdam is the MovieZone Award, aimed at films which impressed the younger part of the festival's audience. It is a notable award because the winners have indeed always been special, titles which would go on to get a life or legend of their own. Films like Breillat's Fat Girl, or Dolan's I Killed My Mother are among the winners, but also Slumdog Millionaire and Persepolis. This year, the winner was the French raucous gender comedy Jacky au Royaume des Filles, aka. Jacky in the Kingdom of Women. Described as both a biting satire AND a romantic fairytale, Jacky in the... |
Review: FACHON MODELS Is Not Even Funny For The Wrong Reasons Posted: 25 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST Rafael Montero's Fachon Models is a new comedy that tries to make the audience laugh right from its title. Poking fun at the bad pronunciation of "fashion models", it is an instant attempt at classist humor, something that by now is the sort-of standard for Mexican comedies. Thanks to its name, poster, tagline ("being ugly is now fashionable") and trailer, Fachon Models always looked as a movie that maybe, just maybe could be one of those disasters with some amusingly awful material to enjoy. The truth is different and I didn't laugh once, not even for the wrong reasons. The bad acting, formulaic story, and how they tried to sell me all sorts of products were in conjunct just another reminder of the awful year... |
