SXSW 2014 Review: STAGE FRIGHT Sings, Dances, And Slashes Its Way Into Hearts Posted: 11 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT In the fall of 2010, everyone at Fantastic Fest was talking about The Legend of Beaver Dam, a short film that looked like a spooky horror flick until it burst into a musical. The short captured the disparate moods required for both types of movies to succeed, and did so in spectacular fashion. It seems like everyone wanted more of that type of delightfully bent genre-mashing. Now we have more from writer/director Jerome Sable, in the form of Stage Fright, a full-bore, feature-length horror/comedy/musical, set at a performing arts camp for kids, where everyone is free to be a theater geek without fear of standing out from the crowd. It's an ambitious, enthusiastic effort, and when it hits the right chord, it's great fun. When... |
Review: STONES FOR THE RAMPART Is A Serviceable Ode To Young War Heroes Posted: 11 Mar 2014 05:30 PM PDT There are two conflicting perspectives on how to approach Robert Glinski's Stones for the Rampart (Kamienie na szaniec). The first, and the more advisable one, makes the viewing experience increasingly pleasurable. It's based on an assumption that the forenamed film is nothing more than a surprisingly approachable based-on-facts historical drama about friendship, honor and sacrifice during the tumultuous times of World War II. The second one predetermines the perception of the film not as a dramatized version of real life events, but as an uncalled-for adaptation that somehow undermines the importance of a precious myth that surrounds the fallen heroes of a beloved wartime story.Based on Janusz Kaminski's legendary 1943 book of the same name, Stones for the Rampart pays homage to a group of... |
SXSW 2014 Review: LATE PHASES Is A Dollar Short Posted: 11 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT A friend of mine is fond of applying the phrase "a wolf in sheep's clothing" to genre films. The theory goes that a good genre flick should have a tried and true "A" genre suit of sheep's clothing, and a deeper and more thoughtful "B" concept at its core. As an example, Let the Right One In is presented in the sheep's clothing of a "vampire film," but the film is actually about isolation, the darkness of childhood, and longing for connection in a disconnected world. With that in mind, Adrián García Bogliano deserve credit for setting out to make his film Late Phases more than just a werewolf flick. On the surface, the film is the story of one blind Vietnam vet's badass struggle... |

THE HUSBAND Gets Doored In Latest Teaser Posted: 11 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PDT Bruce McDonald's dark comedy hits the big screen on this coming Friday with its theatrical run beginning at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. And if you want a taste at the film's very dry sense of humor, well, look no further than the latest teaser to arrive on the scene.Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, who co-wrote the movie, stars as a man steadily unravelling as he cares for his infant son while his teacher wife (Sarah Allen) serves a jail sentence for sleeping with a teenaged student. SXSW 2014 Review: OPEN WINDOWS Never Shuts Down Its Thrill Ride Posted: 11 Mar 2014 02:30 PM PDT Early on in Open Windows, Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo invites easy comparisons to Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, but then, pardon the expression, he throws them out the window. What begins as an homage quickly morphs into a thriller with its own unique, wildly enjoyable, and altogether satisfying identity. The creatures who inhabit this cheeky cyber-sphere are the usual suspects found in techno-thrillers. Nick Chambers (Elijah Wood) is the perfect patsy, an innocent citizen caught up in events that spiral out of control in a heartbeat. Jill Goddard (Sasha Grey) is the 21st-century version of Grace Kelley, a glamorous actress with an exploitable personal life. She is also easily-positioned as Nick's imaginary girlfriend, though he would never dare to say that out loud. He worships her... |
Review: Tone-deaf MONSTER Exhibits Unusual Cruelty Towards Women Posted: 11 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT Ingenue Kim Go-eun gets her first top billing in director Hwang In-ho's uneven and sadistic revenge thriller Monster. Exhibiting the same irreverence towards genre as in his previous film Spellbound (2011) but with none of the panache, Hwang fails to keep things on track with a slow to start narrative, a young star out of her depth and a disturbing streak of misogyny. Bok-soon operates a small vegetable stand in the countryside. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, she is prone to fits of anger when people rub her the wrong way. She lives with her younger sister who is kidnapped and killed by the cold-blooded Tae-soo, who commits the deed to cover his tracks for another slaying. Setting out to avenge her sister,... |
FICUNAM 2014 Review: THE SEARCHES (LAS BÚSQUEDAS), A Small Black And White Drama With Depth Posted: 11 Mar 2014 01:30 PM PDT José Luis Valle's The Searches (Las Búsquedas) reveals at the end that it was filmed in seven days using real locations, without artificial lights, and costing only $1,500 dollars in total. It is indeed a very small film, with a rather simple narrative, but one that offers depth. It uses black-and-white cinematography, long takes, a slow place -- the latter two elements can be also found in Valle's other narrative film Workers -- and three recognizable actors, touching such complex themes as loneliness, sorrow, love and revenge. There's a clear narrative that moves The Searches, connecting two separate stories, but the heart of the film is in its little and very human moments; in a way, it wouldn't be a surprise if Valle reveals at... |
Posted: 11 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT Nymphomaniac was easily one of the most anticipated films of 2014, a new creation by Danish master provocateur Lars Von Trier whose path to the big screen was paved with sometimes cryptic and sometimes funny promotional campaign teasing the impatient hordes of fans as much as impartial observers. The film itself boosted the interest of general public with lascivious content scattered through 50 years in the life of a nymphomaniac. A multilayered psychological study, the analysis of pathology or the best damn intellectual comedy, the choice(s) is up to viewers. Needles to say, the abundance of porn controversy proved to be at least misinterpreted as von Trier delivered sensation for the mind rather than for a body. The sexual odyssey exuberates with compelling observations... |

I Doco Dare You To Enter Roger Ballen's ASYLUM OF THE BIRDS Posted: 11 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT Renowned photographer Roger Ballen was born in the US, but has lived in South Africa since the 1970's, where he photographs the inhabitants of society's boondocks. A short doco (documentary) about Ballen's work on Asylum Of The Birds, the new monograph he is publishing this month, is now available to watch in full. Like Ballen's own work, the film is disturbing and delirious and delightfully demented, providing glimpses of Ballen's method and the secret worlds in which he works. The film was shot and directed by South African documentarian Ben Jay Crossman, who has made a number of riveting short docos, most notably the three-part Streets Of Fietas, about life in the forgotten corners of drug- and crime-addled suburban South African. Crossman's work shares much in common... |

SXSW 2014 Review: STARRY EYES, A Surrealistic Trip Down The Boulevard of Broken Dreams Posted: 11 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT "Would you give me your body to be a vessel for my voice?," asks the nefarious casting director of the wide-eyed starlet Sarah Walker at the sort of audition parents, boyfriends, and general advocates of decency shudder at the thought. Like so many actresses hustling to get noticed, Walker reluctantly agrees that yes, she would do anything, despite her accurate suspicion that something is rotten in Denmark. But when the seemingly innocent question finally reveals its exploitative intention, Walker maintains that she isn't that kind of girl. Unfortunately, what she is really communicating to the sleaze factory is that she isn't the kind of girl who lands roles due to a lack of dedication. It's a horribly manipulative situation that sadly exists outside the realm... |
