Remakes are funny things - one can hope that at the least they can pave their own path, taking a different tack on an established storyline. Most are just redundant, simply bland substitutes for another work. Finally, there are those (thankfully rare) remakes that seem to do the near-impossible, to be so egregious that they retroactively make the original somehow seem worse. Some exceptional remakes do the opposite of this - they stand on their own, they reference the original without being reverential, and in sometimes quite astonishing ways they actually improve on a film that itself is already a classic. These best-of-the-best do that same retroactive magic trip, but this time for the better. These remakes, in these rare times, can be loved on their...

Race From Death With Full Trailer For Iguchi's LIVE

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Machine Girl director Iguchi Noboru has been going through something of a personal reinvention process over the past couple years, not abandoning the genre world that is his stock in trade but certainly looking to expand the palette a bit beyond goofy effects and slapstick humor. He still does those, too, but there's a definite move towards other approaches as well. And the changes in approach are certainly evident in the full trailer for his upcoming effort Live. Here's how Eigapedia describes it:On the morning of a certain Tuesday, a mysterious "death race" is suddenly announced on television. Viewers are enthralled by the excitement of the competition, with participants getting knocked out of the race one after another in unpredictable ways. Meanwhile, survivors refer to...

Crowdfund This! Nathan Silver's Black Comedy STINKING HEAVEN

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 09:30 AM PDT

We've no doubt covered a lot of ground when sharing the good word on film projects that need a little love, but I don't think we've yet to spotlight a project quite like Nathan Silver's Stinking Heaven. The logline for the project: A black as tar comedy following a commune of recovering drug addicts in 1990 suburban New York, Stinking Heaven is the portrait of a group of people on the verge of a syncrhnnized nervous breakdown. Now just who is this Nathan Silver? Well, the keen eyed reader will recall seeing his name and his films featured on Twitch before. Last summer I reviewed his second feature Exit Elena, and spoke with Nathan, along with friend and fellow indie filmmaker Christopher Bell, for my...

Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks THE RAID 2, OCULUS and DRAFT DAY

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 08:30 AM PDT

A couple genre gems this week - the first, Gareth Evan's epic sequel to The Raid: Redemption (the film that made me write for Twitch in the first place!), The Raid 2 is as ambitious as it is impactful.Oculus from TIFF 2013's Midnight Madness slate is a super-smart, super-stylish horror film that's making quite the splash on its wide release. Finally, there's Draft Day, a truly egregious sport movie that plays as a mix of propaganda and melodrama.Video embedded below...

TMNT: Here Is Your First Glance At Splinter In The New 'Brothers' TV Spot!

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT

IGN released a new TV Spot for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles today and it has our first glimpse of Splinter in it. And I mean glimpse. If you blink you are going to miss him. But he is twirling a sword so that can only mean that he is going to throw down at some point in the film, right? Just as long as it is not a Yoda-Dooku-all-I-see-is-green kind of fight then I might enjoy that. Splinter is played by Danny Woodburn and voiced by Tony Shalhoub....

Learning From The Masters Of Cinema: Sam Fuller's WHITE DOG

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT

One of Hollywood's true maverick filmmakers, Sam Fuller was never a man to shy away from tackling important social and political issues in his films. Famously, he was the first American filmmaker to tackle the Korean War, in The Steel Helmet, mental illness (among other issues) in Shock Corridor, and child abuse in The Naked Kiss. So when Paramount executives Jon Davison and Don Simpson were scrambling to get a bunch of projects through production ahead of an upcoming writers' strike in 1981, who better to take on the long-gestating White Dog than Fuller, hot again after the recent success of The Big Red One.White Dog is adapted from an autobiographical novel written by Romain Gray, which told the story of how he and his...

Review: GAME OF THRONES S4E02, THE LION AND THE ROSE (Or, Golly Those Lannisters Know How To Throw A Party)

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Twitch continues with its ongoing series of recap / reviews of HBO's Game Of Thrones, written from the perspective of someone who has made the deliberate choice not to read the books so he can experience the series cold. Feedback is, of course, always welcome and encouraged but please respect the perspective of the writer and other readers unfamiliar with the source novels and limit discussions to the events that have unfolded on screen thus far and do not roam ahead....
