Cannes 2014 Review: LOST RIVER, Or Ryan Gosling's Memorably Weird Thesis Film

Posted: 20 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT

The answer to the question can Ryan Gosling direct is a resounding 'Sort of.' Lost River is an unwieldy mess of a film, all over the place, scatterbrained, entropic. You could even go so far as to call it an objectively Bad Movie. But you'd have to admit it houses some incredible filmmaking. At its root, Lost River is Ryan Gosling's student film. Like most student films, it's a messy collection of long dreamed of images and half-assed execution. Normally, these projects reveal nuggets of promise but are hampered by less than adequate means, usually financial and organizational, of seeing them through. That doesn't seem to be the case here. Lost River has the rare honor of being amateur film made by industry professionals. Ask me what...

Fantaspoa 2014 Interview: Till Kleinert On DER SAMURAI

Posted: 20 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Till Kleinert's Der Samurai was definitely one of the best and weirdest films I watched during Fantaspoa 2014. Since our own Joshua Chaplinsky wrote a great review for it, I decided to complement our coverage by talking with the German director. It was a long conversation of almost 40 minutes, which certainly proves two things: Kleinert is a great and kind guy and Fantaspoa a very unique festival. Note: Spoilers throughout.  Twitch: How has your experience been at Fantaspoa? Till Kleinert: What can I say? It has been an amazing experience. Not much sleep. Free food, free drinks all the time. It has been a blast. I have seen a lot of films that otherwise I might not have. For example, Saint Bernard by Gabe Bartalos, who...

Cannes 2014 Review: GIRLHOOD Challenges Expectations From Its Very First Moments

Posted: 20 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Girlhood (Bande des Filles) quite literally kicks off to a running start. In the first second in the very first shot, a rush of decked-out football players come hurtling head-on directly at the camera. Backed by thumping, synth-heavy electropop, we follow them in slow-motion as they blitz, tackle and score, pumping themselves and the audience up with this high energy overture. It ends when the gridiron gladiators leave their helmets and padding on the field to reveal... long hair and soft skin. These are all teenage girls. Cut to title card: Girlhood. The opening nimbly sets up this remarkable film's intentions. For the two hours that follow, it will continually challenge what's expected of its characters, both by their peers and by us, the viewers. The gender...
