Look At These Mosquito Posters From FRANKENSTEIN'S ARMY

It is not exactly a secret that Dutch director Richard Raaphorst can draw a mean piece of art when necessary. A few years ago, he basically got the production of Frankenstein's Army rolling on the power of just one of his sketches. Indeed, he even makes quick portraits of actors during auditions, re-imagining them in full costume on the spot. So when Richard told me he was doing detailed anatomical drawings of some of the monsters in Frankenstein's Army, I was very much interested. And DAMN they looked good! So this is what Richard did: he further developed a very detailed sketch of fan-favorite monster Mosquito, took it to fellow artist Jurriaan Verdoold, and together they created the awesome poster you see below. And it's...

First Trailer: LIFE ITSELF, Roger Ebert Doc

Posted: 21 May 2014 02:30 PM PDT

"Truly remarkable" is how our own Jason Gorber described Life Itself, a documentary about film critic Roger Ebert that has been warmly received since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Directed by Steve James, Life Itself tracks the career of the Pulitzer Prize-winner, his ups and downs, his competitive relationship with fellow film critic Gene Shalit, and his battle with the disease that ultimately took his life. It's heading to select theaters in the U.S. on July 4, when it will also be available to watch via various Video On Demand platforms. The first trailer has been released, featuring the aforementioned quote by Mr. Gorber, and it's quite a good appetizer. Check it out below. ...

Woody Allen's MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT Gets A Trailer

Posted: 21 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Woody Allen, 78, continues to make films that are distinctly his own. Magic in the Moonlight is his latest; set in the 1920s, it stars Colin Firth as an actor brought to the French Riviera to investigate Emma Stone, a spiritualist who may be a charlatan. The first trailer has been released, and it features many of Allen's signature touches, as well as certain elements that may drive non-fanatics off the deep end. The movie is scheduled for release on July 25. ...

Die Antwoord Unleash Rabid PITBULL TERRIER

Posted: 21 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Die Antwoord will be playing a lead role, as themselves, in fellow-South African Neill "District 9" Blomkamp's upcoming feature, Chappie. They have been involved in that film for a long time, and I suspect we will see their creative fingerprints all over it. Consequently, a new music video by Die Antwoord is noteworthy, especially considering it's their first production since wrapping on Chappie in February. Their experience working with Blomkamp appears to have rubbed off, because Pitbull Terrier, the first single from their upcoming album Donker Mag (Dark Power), is the most cinematic of their productions to date. Which says something about this supposed music group; it says that they're not. They are as much a visual force as they are a musical force, which to my...

Interview: Alejandro Jodorowsky Talks Life, Art, And THE DANCE OF REALITY

Posted: 21 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

I cannot think of an artist with more integrity than Alejandro Jodorowsky, the man who made cinematic history by inadvertently creating the midnight movie via El Topo. It's an otherworldly film that came out of nowhere for American audiences, many of whom lined up around the block, night after night, to watch and rewatch Jodorowsky's surrealistic odyssey. El Topo offered a singularly memorizing experience in its apocalyptic meditation on heroes and egos, monsters and beauty, zen and violence, and good vs evil. One midnighter, a chap named John Lennon, was so taken by Jodorowsky's vision that he insisted to his manager, Allen Klein, that he buy El Topo and offer a proper New York engagement to the greater public. And so the film was taken from its...

Pretty Packaging: Take A Look At The French SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK

Posted: 21 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

When we had the idea to start posting galleries of particularly noteworthy disc-releases, we did not intend to make this an exclusively French affair. But the thing is: the French really enjoy pimping the films they love, and even those they are merely fond of. And these things sell as well, there is a healthy market for them, giving distributors extra incentive to pretty-up their releases. Take this French release for Aramaki Shinji's Space Pirate Captain Harlock, or simply Albator as they call him in France. The film itself has us divided here at Twitch. While it looks gorgeous, and some found it fun (see Peter van der Lugt's review), others think the film is soulless, merely a very long videogame cutscene. So who is...

Destroy All Monsters: Men Plan; GODZILLA Laughs

Posted: 21 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Not enough Godzilla in Godzilla? Fuuuuuuuck you. Any more Godzilla, and Godzilla (the 2014 American update of the so-venerable-as-to-seem-centuries-old Japanese film franchise) would tip its hand, becoming a visible tragedy. Director Gareth Edwards wisely shoots Godzilla entirely from the ant's point of view, leaving Gojira out of the story and the frame, until the giant radioactive lizard becomes so overpowering that even the ant couldn't fail to notice him - and in this case, the ants are us. (Read James' review of Godzilla here.) When this summer is over we will have something to say about post-human-race moviegoing. We, as a species, are introduced in Godzilla in a literal ant farm sequence, as Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) visits a collapsed mining site, the crater's walls...
