Check Out This Fan-Made AKIRA PROJECT Trailer Posted: 09 May 2014 09:00 PM PDT As Hollywood see-saws on a live-action adaptation of Otomo Karsuhiro's manga and anime, Akira, that has not stopped his legion of fans from expressing their love for his work. Such an example of this passion for the source material bearing good fruit comes in a new fan made trailer called Akira Project. This group of fans is based out of Montreal, Quebec, and their passion for the source material comes through loud and clear! The Akira Project is a crowd-sourced, non-profit project meant to create a live action fan trailer of AKIRA, the renowned manga-turned-anime film from the late 1980′s; a stunning example of both mediums as art forms. While Hollywood has been working on a live-action Akira movie for a few years now, we, as... |
Posted: 09 May 2014 03:30 PM PDT Community has been through so much over its five year run -- from lead cast members departing to the firing and rehiring of creator Dan Harmon as showrunner -- that cancellation, oddly enough, seemed to be less and less likely as the cult show inched along with its meager ratings in the junkyard wasteland that is NBC's primetime lineup. But the hammer has come down, and with NBC's upfront conference for next fall's returning shows all said and done, Community is left on the side lines.Earlier this spring at the television festival PaleyFest, Harmon and his team were hopeful for a sixth season. "I think that we're old reliable, like a Tupperware in the fridge," Harmon stated. And this year's finale indeed put more effort... |
New York Asian Film Festival 2014 Gets Into Gear With First Titles Posted: 09 May 2014 02:30 PM PDT From the bowels of Subway Cinema and their more haughty brethren at The Film Society Of Lincoln comes the first rumblings of the 13th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival, otherwise known as NYAFF. If you're a regular Twitch reader then you know how we feel about NYAFF, which is all warm and fuzzy.Ahead of the full lineup, they've announced that their centerpiece film will be Umin Bayo's baseball epic Kano, which James Marsh gave some great love to in his review last month. In addition, this year's Korean Actor In Focus is Lee Jung-jae (The Housemaid), and then there's screenings of Miike Takeshi's The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji, Jo Ui-seok and Kim Byung-seo's Cold Eyes. Crowdfund This! Nathan Silver's Black Comedy STINKING HEAVEN Posted: 09 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT [UPDATE: With ten hours left in the campaign STINKING HEAVEN has less than $1,000 to reach their goal. If it's any incentive to give 'em that final push, Nathan Silver's fourth feature UNCERTAIN TERMS will be world premiering next month at the LA Film Festival, which ain't too shabby.] We've no doubt covered a lot of ground when sharing the good word on film projects that need a little love, but I don't think we've yet to spotlight a project quite like Nathan Silver's Stinking Heaven. The logline for the project: A black as tar comedy following a commune of recovering drug addicts in 1990 suburban New York, Stinking Heaven is the portrait of a group of people on the verge of a syncrhnnized nervous... |
Posted: 09 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT Okay, Toronto, here's a rare treat!Back in 1980 famed Star Wars art director Roger Christian made the move to the director's chair with a 25 minute short film titled Black Angel. George Lucas was enough of a fan of the film that he tied it to the release of The Empire Strikes Back in the UK, Australia and Scandinavia but despite the famous backing it was never released on any home video format and, in fact, was believed to be lost entirely until a 35mm print turned up in December of 2011.Well, it's getting a release now. Canadian outfit Juice Distribution will be making Black Angel available on iTunes and other VOD platforms around the world on May 20th and to celebrate they've got Christian... |
Jeonju 2014 Review: Meditative POHANG HARBOR Doesn't Quite Connect Posted: 09 May 2014 12:30 PM PDT In a country with so many hardships out in the open and an unspoken swell of pain swirling just beneath the surface, there needs to be a release valve for the frustrations of ordinary citizens. In Korea, that role is often taken on by cinema. Not so long ago, narratives that poked holes in the thin fabric of modern Korean society were legion in the commercial arena, but of late this role has passed on to the independent scene. Whether silenced or pushed towards the edge of their society, a great many protagonists in contemporary Korean indies serve as metaphors for a repressed society at large. Fitting directly into this mode is the lead in Pohang Harbor, one of the Korean Competition titles at this... |
THE INBETWEENERS 2: First Teaser Takes Schoolboy Antics To The Outback Posted: 09 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT The first teaser for The Inbetweeners 2, the sequel to the hit comedy The Inbetweeners Movie, based on the British TV series, has been released via the official Facebook page, and it's brief and to the point. As our own Andrew Mack reported when it was first announced in August 2012, the first movie "was the biggest opening for a comedy ever in the UK; eclipsing records previously held by sequels to the Bridget Jones and The Hangover movies. It was made on a bare budget of $5.5 million and took $71 million at the U.K. box office." No plot details have been revealed, as far as I can determine, though the teaser suggests the boys are taking their antics to Australia. The principal cast... |
Melons, Love And Emptiness: Tsai Ming-liang Retrospective In Vienna Posted: 09 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT It is time for melons in Vienna: From May 9-23, a retrospective covering the complete oeuvre of Tsai Ming-liang runs at the Stadtkino Vienna as a part of Wiener Festwochen. For two weeks the Malaysian born filmmaker will be presented as an artist in various forms: cinema, installation works, and theatre performances. Therefore, the works of Tsai Ming-liang will not only be presented inside the cinema space, but also in public exhibition places such as the Künstlerhaus Passagegalerie, where his installation "It's a dream" will be shown. His cinema is a cinema of time. He teaches us to really look at things, to participate and to feel every little movement. Thus, he shows that cinema is still a medium that can play an important counterpart... |
Crowdfund This! UK Short WHITE Channels Wenders And Lynch Into Something Compelling And New Posted: 09 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT Well, now, this is a pleasant surprise. Even had I known that UK actress Montserrat Lombard - a great favorite in these parts for her comedy work as well as dramas such as Ashes To Ashes - I would never has expected something like White to be the outcome. And sometimes it's a good thing, indeed, to be surprised. Lombard has teamed up with fellow UK actor Sean Harris (Prometheus, Southcliffe, soon to be in MacBeth) to create the short, which they describe as a fairly tale for adults informed by films such as Badlands, Paris, Texas and early David Lynch. The duo are just under a third of the way to their sixteen thousand pound goal with just a few days left and if... |
New Trailer & Images For Zhang Yimou's COMING HOME Posted: 09 May 2014 09:18 AM PDT Coming Home, the latest Chinese epic from Hero and Flowers Of War director Zhang Yimou, will have its world premiere next week at Cannes, where it plays out of competition. Due to hit screens here in Hong Kong on 6 June, Edko Films has released a trailer and stills for the grand scale romance, based on the novel by Yan Geiling.Gong Li re-teams with the director who made her an international star in films like To Live and Raise The Red Lantern, alongside Chen Daoming for this sprawling tale of a family torn apart by conflict, separated for decades, and then struggling to reconcile after the Cultural Revolution. ... |
The Many Faces Of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Posted: 09 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT With the fourth season of Game of Thrones in full swing, let's take a look at the actor playing Jaime Lannister: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Quite possibly one of the most feline-looking male actors on the planet, Nikolaj is perfectly cast as the pride of the lions of Clan Lannister. Apart from having the looks and the moves, he is a fine actor as well. A good thing that is too, as Jaime Lannister has a character-rollercoaster instead of a character-arc. Admired and lauded for the evil things he has done, reviled and scorned for the good things he has done, Jaime can't help but be pretty messed up at this point in the story. What surprised me, and gave me the idea for using him in... |
Hey Los Angeles! Hola Mexico Offers A Tempting Menu Of Mexican Cinematic Delights Posted: 09 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT Celebrating its sixth edition, the Hola Mexico Festival starts today (Friday, May 9), in Los Angeles at Regal Cinemas LA LIVE. The festival aims to bring "the best films, food and music from Mexico to Downtown Los Angeles," and as part of that mission, they've lined up a lovely program of Spanish-language movies. Trailer: DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT 2, Plus Exclusive Words From Star Andrew Sensenig Posted: 09 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT There's a special place in my black heart for '70s horror films that are just the right blend of shlock and and grit. Like-minded fans may recall the 1973 film Don't Look In The Basement, aka The Forgotten, aka what I would argue is one of several influences on Edgar Wright's fantastic faux grindhouse trailer, Don't.The surprisingly good Don't Look In The Basement has now spawned a sequel more than 40 years later, aptly titled Don't Look In The Basement 2. Director Anthony Brownrigg, son of the director of the first film, S.F. Brownrigg, has returned to the original shooting location for the newest tale. "The film is more of a paranormal thriller than drive-in horror," Brownrigg says.Twitch was able to get an exclusive quote from star... |
