EXCLUSIVE: Get A First Look At THE SEARCH FOR WENG WENG Trailer Posted: 09 May 2014 01:00 AM PDT Those of you lucky enough to have seen 80s Filipino action oddity For Your Height Only will be familiar with the legacy of Weng Weng, and now there's a new documentary doing the rounds that pries open the legend of the pint-sized leading man, and Twitch has an exclusive first look at the trailer. The Search For Weng Weng is Andrew Leavold's obsessive quest to discover exactly what became of the 2'9" kung-fu kicking 'James Bond' of Filipino Cinema - one of his country's biggest stars throughout the 1980s.The film recently screened at Udine's Far East Film Festival and will receive its UK premiere at Sheffield Doc Fest next month. It will also be making its market debut at Cannes next week, courtesy of Monster Pictures.Shot... |
SNOWPIERCER Gets An Action-Packed Red Band US Trailer Posted: 08 May 2014 08:32 PM PDT Almost a year since its debut in director Bong Joon-ho's native South Korea last summer, futuristic thriller Snowpiercer finally arrives on US shores on 27 June, courtesy of Radius TWC. While Harvey Weinstein ultimately lost his battle to re-edit the film into a leaner, faster version better suited to the simple-minded tastes of middle America, this new trailer certainly does its best to market the film as a non-stop action juggernaut. While there certainly is plenty of violent mayhem in Bong's film, which is adapted from Jacques Lob's French comic book series and stars a raft of talent including Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho and Tilda Swinton, the film finds plenty of time for contemplation and meditation on the state of humanity in a dystopian future where... |
THE ROVER: New Clip From David Michod's Thriller Posted: 08 May 2014 05:05 PM PDT David Michod's thriller The Rover made it onto our list of hotly anticipated films for 2014 for good reason. Michod had already made an impression on us with Animal Kingdom. Then he added stalwart actor Guy Pearce to the mix. And Robert Pattinson continues to shake off the remains of that other franchise and looks impressive in this as well. The Rover will debut at Cannes very soon and there is a new clip to share with you, as well as a new poster. Below is a statement Michod gave to Indiewire today. Call it a summary of the theme and story in his new film. Cannot wait to see it. "The Australian Outback of The Rover is a world ten years after a great Western economic... |
GN'R's Slash Joins Rodrigo Gudiño's CUT THROATS NINE Posted: 08 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT This is just one of those 'Oh hell. Why not' kind of news bits for today. Ever since I heard about Rodrigo Gudiño's plan to retool the 1972 western, Cut-Throats Nine, a few years ago in a back alley cinema here in Toronto, I have been eagerly awaiting this project. A number of high profile actors are already attached, too, by way of Mads Mikkelsen and Harvey Keitel. Keeping it local, Canadian actor Kris Holden Ried and British-born but still an iconic mainstay in Canadian productions, Julian Richings, have also been announced for the cast. So why not add a little rock n' roll? Word out today that guitar legend and horror enthusiast Slash will be joining the production! Sadly, as of this moment, he is only... |
THE SACRAMENT: Watch This 'Brother And Sister' Clip From Ti West's Horror Posted: 08 May 2014 03:35 PM PDT Ti West's latest horror film The Sacrament is currently available on iTunes and OnDemand. It will open in cinemas on June 6. CraveOnline got an exclusive clip from the film to share with everyone. So a virtual pat on their backs for sharing it with us. Yay, them. However! The folks over at CraveOnline have also put up a Spoiler Alert warning along with this clip. They say that this 'Brother and Sister' clip is 'an important, scary plot point' in the film. So though it only be a forty second clip, it is apparently a dangerous forty second clip to watch if you do not want anything to be ruined for you when you watch it. You will find the clip below, along with the Red... |
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES: The War Has Already Begun In Newest Trailer Posted: 08 May 2014 02:30 PM PDT The world gravitas gets thrown around a lot. But holy heck if it does not apply here. The newest trailer for Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes drips with it! You can also begin to piece together the story as well. Humanity is recovering from the devastating Simian Flu. Gary Oldman leads the charge against the apes while Jason Clarke tries to stop the inevitable. Caesar (Andy Serkis) has been taking care of his own, but it looks like the two sides are bound to clash. A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides... |
Udine 2014 Review: MY PRETEND GIRLFRIEND Unfurls A Quietly Heartbreaking Tale Of First Love Posted: 08 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT Known for his great contributions to the world of Japanese commercials, Yakumo Saiji has finally decided to venture into feature-length filmmaking, and for the world premiere of his debut, he chose the Udine Far East Film Festival. Seeing that the huge cinema was nearly jam-packed with anxious audience members, his decision couldn't have been more perfect.Based on Nakata Eicihi's 2003 popular teen novel, My Pretend Girlfriend (Momose, Kocchi wo Muite) unfurls a relatively simple yet incredibly moving tale of first love, first heartbreaks, and all the raw feelings that inevitably come with such life changing experiences. Beloved by various audiences, high school-set stories obviously hold a special place in Japanese pop culture, but they often tend to be either too lovey-dovey for some tastes, or... |
PHANTASMAGORIA: Exclusive First Look At Horror Anthology Teaser Posted: 08 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT We have your first look at the first teaser for the Franco-Italo horror anthology Phantasmagoria. And it really is just a tease but it quickly projects a sense of growing tension and fear. I would like to see more. Three directors, Mickael Abbate, Domiziano Cristopharo & Tiziano Martella, offer us their original visions of fear in three gripping films that encompass the breadth of the genre: Diabolique, Il serpente dalla lingua acciaio and My Gift to You. Three different shorts about spirits belief and supernatural phenomenons able to surprise the audience in showing original, fascinating and scaring stories drawing on the traditional genre flavors of thriller, supernatural, horror-comedy, zombie action and slasher filtered though the unique sensibility of each director. The anthology will have its worldwide market... |
Review: LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN Is A Trip Worth Taking Posted: 08 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT In a period of perpetual celebration of the 75th anniversary of MGM's The Wizard of Oz -- including a glossy theatrical re-release, Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful, and a tribute at the Academy Awards -- an independently produced animated sequel that's not even based on any of the many canonical Oz books seems suspect at best. Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return, featuring the voice talent of Martin Short, Lea Michelle, Dan Aykroyd, James Belushi, and Bernadette Peters, might be a few decades off for the term "all-star" cast. At a glance, it would appear the odds of such an endeavor actually being worthwhile would be as great as the odds of an unassuming young girl from Kansas defeating a tyrannical witch and liberating an enchanted kingdom.... |
Posted: 08 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT Not only martial arts fans, but cinephiles in general are in for a rare treat this summer when the retrospective "All Hail The King: The Films of King Hu" arrives at BAM Rose Cinemas in Brooklyn from June 6 through 17. Immensely influential, King Hu, during his three-decade career, made films in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea, and raised the wuxia genre to new artistic heights and aesthetic beauty, with a style that integrated Chinese philosophy, aesthetics, and opera into his cinematic techniques. The reach of Hu's influence remains strong up to the present day; this great filmmaker inspired other great ones, such as Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers), and Tsui Hark (The Blade). BAMcinematek's 15-film retrospective includes nine of King... |

Review: STAGE FRIGHT Sings, Dances, And Slashes Its Way Into Hearts Posted: 08 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT In the fall of 2010, everyone at Fantastic Fest was talking about The Legend of Beaver Dam, a short film that looked like a spooky horror flick until it burst into a musical. The short captured the disparate moods required for both types of movies to succeed, and did so in spectacular fashion. It seems like everyone wanted more of that type of delightfully bent genre-mashing. Now we have more from writer/director Jerome Sable, in the form of Stage Fright, a full-bore, feature-length horror/comedy/musical, set at a performing arts camp for kids, where everyone is free to be a theater geek without fear of standing out from the crowd. It's an ambitious, enthusiastic effort, and when it hits the right chord, it's great fun. When... |
Crowdfund This! Indie Horror BEACON POINT Needs Your Help! Posted: 08 May 2014 10:30 AM PDT Something deadly is lurking along the Appalachian Trail and director Eric Blue needs help to bring it to life!Blue's American indie horror film Beacon Point has wrapped up principal photography but the team behind the film is looking for a little help to get it over the finishing line and has turned to Kickstarter to raise funds towards post production. And given that it's already got a very solid trailer it seems like a pretty safe bet that this gets completed and released.Beacon Point is a feature length thriller about a group of hikers on a 10 day hike of the Appalachian Trail. The group hikes deeper into the Great Smoky Mountains, and soon realize they are lost. Things start to go from bad to... |
Review: NEIGHBORS Goes Directly For The Raunch Posted: 08 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT To put it bluntly, asking why things happen in Hollywood studio comedies is besides the point. It's all about getting to the funny as expeditiously and as often as possible. Neighbors, a new Hollywood studio comedy by Nicholas Stoller, quickly untethers from reality. Thus freed from the burdens of narrative logic and/or character development, the comic talents of Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Ike Barinholtz, and others are allowed to float free and act on their impulses in an 'anything goes' atmosphere -- the raunchier the better. Director Stoller and writers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O'Brien are graduates of the Judd Apatow school of studio humor, and so are well-versed in cooking up a comedy that adheres to a certain recipe: bookending the... |
Fear Death With The Trailer For Daniel De La Vega's NECROPHOBIA 3D Posted: 08 May 2014 09:30 AM PDT Of all the countries in Latin America it is Argentina which has most wholeheartedly embraced genre film in recent years, with a handful of talented young filmmakers driving a push towards horror film in that country that has since spilled out into surrounding areas while finding great success around the world in international festivals. And amongst that core group, Daniel De La Vega was one of the first - his filmography reaching back into the 1990s and boasting titled such as Jennifer's Shadow which found distribution around the globe and proved to the locals that you could actually do this. Well, De La Vega is deep into post on his latest offering now and he's blazing new ground for local audiences once again with a... |
Review: CHEF Cooks Up Profound Retrospect Posted: 08 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT I've been waiting 15 years to give Jon Favreau the glowing review he's earned in spades with his return-to-roots film Chef. He has no doubt had a very interesting career since his initial indie splash Swingers back in 1996, but in many unfortunate ways, everything he's done since has somewhat existed in that film's shadow. After the double-edged success of Swingers, Favreau was faced with the stultifying task of delivering on the expectations of his vast promise. And so he reunited two years later with bromance compadre Vince Vaughn, as the pair attempted to reignite their beloved chemistry with Made, a buddy mob-com that saw a far more annoying Vaughn than the charismatic playboy that won Indie hearts in '96. Perhaps it was in the... |
Score With Costa Rican Football Comedy ITALIA 90 Posted: 08 May 2014 08:30 AM PDT Costa Rican writer-director Miguel Gomez has been a great favorite in these parts thanks to his comedy infused genre pieces first person horror El Sanatorio and apocalyptic laugher The End, and he's headed in a slightly different direction with his next feature, the upcoming Italia 90. Yes, the comedy is still there - I suspect it always will be with Gomez - but this time out he's offering up a based on true life tale of the first ever Costa Rican football squad to make it to the World Cup.The first trailer for the film has arrived online and while there are no subtitles on the current version it's not at all hard to see that Gomez is in fine form here. Check it out... |
Review: THE DOUBLE Confirms Aoyade As A Potent, Fresh Voice Posted: 08 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT It seems fair to say that when Richard Aoyade's debut feature, Submarine, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010, it caught people by surprise. There were few expectations on the little indie comedy from the large-haired comedian turned director, no big name cast to hang hopes on, and simply not enough information available for those not already devotees of Ayoade's comedy work to form any sort of opinion. And so people were caught somewhat by surprise when it became a huge buzz title from the festival that year, securing a big sale to a big company and, as buzz titles often do, ultimately dividing audiences into two camps. On one side there were those -- myself very much among them -- who simply... |
Hemsworth And Lin Offered LETHAL WEAPON 5 Posted: 08 May 2014 07:30 AM PDT If they're going to continue the Lethal Weapon franchise, this aint a bad way to go about it.The Tracking Board reports that Justin Lin is attached to direct a fifth Lethal Weapon film - titled Lionheart - which will revolve around an older cop (most likely Riggs) and his son, who wishes to join the police force. Now, I can't imagine that represents the entirety of the plotline - it nicks the dynamic of the most recent Die Hard film, for one thing, while focusing purely father-son would be a step away from the multi-racial, cross cultural storylines that drove the franchise to this point, which would be a major mistake at a time when movies like Ride Along are proving beyond doubt that a... |
Now Stomping Across The World: Original GODZILLA Instills Nuclear Fear Posted: 08 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT The mighty roar still causes goose-pimples. In honor of the film's 60th anniversary, Rialto Pictures is touring Godzilla: The Japanese Original across the U.S. It opens in Dallas at the Angelika Film Center on Friday, May 9, as well as other locations; visit the official site for theaters and playdates.
