Melbourne 2014 Opens Strong With Aussie Sci-fi Noir PREDESTINATION Posted: 14 May 2014 04:37 AM PDT The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) brings the cinematic delights to the winter-chilled city of Melbourne Australia year after year, and after a fantastic array of festivals across the globe it is refreshing to see that the opening night film for this year is not only an exciting world premiere, but a genre film to boot!Unlike last year's fun yet superfluous misstep with the serviceable I'm So Excited, this year sees MIFF return to its roots by not only supporting Australian cinema, but taking hold of the Oz genre wave that is captivating viewers world-wide.The 63rd Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is thrilled to announce that the 2014 Festival will open with the Australian premiere of the Spierig Brothers' new feature Predestination. After tackling zombies... |
Review: Dutch Skate-boarding Doc ZOMBIE: THE RESURRECTION OF TIM ZOM Grinds Deeper Than The Surface Posted: 14 May 2014 02:00 AM PDT (Dude, who scratched my car?) In the past, the International Film Festival Rotterdam was sometimes chided for not having much locally-made content in its program, being maybe a bit TOO international for its own good. Recent editions have remedied that successfully, by always including at least a few Rotterdam films. This year, two local documentaries even made the audience top-10 list, one of them nearly winning the big prize. That film was Zombie: The Resurrection of Tim Zom, a very well-made look at the titular skate-boarding legend. Zombie starts and ends with highlights of Tim Zom's life. In between it shows its subject from many different sides, a lot of them not so favorable. The starting highlight shows what Tim Zom is world-famous for: he... |
V/H/S VIRAL: New Poster, New Trailer, And A U.S. Distrib! Posted: 13 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT A big day for fans of the V/H/S franchise. The first trailer was released as well as a new poster for the third installment, V/H/S Viral. This trailer will be shown to potential buyers at the market in Cannes. But if you are a Stateside distribution arm looking to get in on the analogue action then I have some bad news for you.If someone else other than Magnet Releasing acquired U.S. rights to the third V/H/S film, V/H/S Viral, we might have been surprised. Magnet has handled the first two, and very well. So what is to stop them from snatching up the rights to the third one? Magnet is eyeing a Fall release. And today's press release also had a description of all the segments.... |
Marko Zaror's REDEEMER Wraps, Check The First Stills! Posted: 13 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT Here's some happy news for international fight fans: Production has wrapped on Redeemer - the fourth collaboration between star Marko Zaror and writer-director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza following Kiltro, Mirageman and Mandrill - and with the film now in post production the first selection of stills have arrived with The Hollywood Reporter getting the first look.Former hitman Nicky Pardo (Zaror) has made a deal with God. Pardo will begin every day by holding a gun to his own head and pulling the trigger. And every day he does not die he will take it as a sign that he is meant to continue hunting down the men he used to work for. Also known for his roles in Machete Kills and Undisputed 3, check out the... |
Watch The Trailer For Cannes Selection THE TRIBE Posted: 13 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT If the above publicity still for Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy's Critic's Week selection The Tribe doesn't catch your attention, how about this: The film plays out entirely in sign language and, if the trailer is to be believed, it does so without subtitles relying instead on the physical performances of its cast to carry the meaning. The story follows a deaf-mute teen sent to a special boarding school where he must navigate his way through the difficult - and potentially criminal - hierarchy within the school. The first trailer has just arrived and - as you may surmise from the image - it's not particularly work safe, though it's also not really as sexualized as you may expect, either. Check it out below.... |
Cannes 2014 Preview: Un Certain Regard and Midnight Screenings Posted: 13 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT Twitch's Cannes coverage continues, today with a look at our most anticipated films in the Un Certain Regard banner, and throwing in two midnight screenings as well. The Un Certain Regard section was created in 1978, in part to give some extra room for less than brand-name filmmakers. The festival is famously loyal to its favorite few, and short of making a total dud, when a filmmaker graduates to OC big league, that's where they tend to stay (this year, for example, a full 2/3 of the directors gunning for the Palme are previous Official Competition award winners). Un Certain Regard, if not breaking up the old boys club exactly, is at least meant to broaden the playing field. Very often, some of the most interesting films... |
Scarlett Johansson Shows Off Her Mental Capacity In Second Trailer For Besson's LUCY Posted: 13 May 2014 12:30 PM PDT Scarlett's got a great, big brain and she's not afraid to use it. That's the general message behind the second trailer for Luc Besson's Lucy, a trailer that cribs extensively from Besson's own back catalog of films while also nodding - heavily and repeatedly - to the like of The Matrix. Because apparently the mind expanding drugs ingested by Johansson as the title character don't just help her think fast, they trigger a whole new round of evolution that wreaks havoc with the laws of physics. Also: Oldboy's Choi Min-sik spattered with blood.Check out the new trailer below.... |
Mike Tyson Stars In Algerian Action Film GATES OF THE SUN. Check The First Poster Now. Posted: 13 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT An action film from Algeria? With Mike Tyson? This Dutch ALICE CREED Remake Is RECKLESS Posted: 13 May 2014 11:30 AM PDT It was all the way back in 2009 that young UK writer-director made his breakthrough with taut thriller The Disappearance Of Alice Creed. Blakeson, at the time, was rightly hailed as a bright young talent to watch, the sort of director who could easily prove to be the next Danny Boyle. He has since disappeared into development hell without a single other credit to his name in the five years since Alice disappeared. And though we still wait for Blakeson to reappear, there goes Alice popping up in the Netherlands thanks to Reckless (Bloedlink), a remake of Blakeson's film from director Joram Lürsen.Ex-cons Victor (Tygo Gernandt) and Rico (Marwan Kenzari) have masterminded a foolproof plan to abduct millonaires' daughter Laura Temming (Sarah Chronis). When she is kidnapped... |

Lars Von Trier And SALVATION Director Kristian Levring Teaming For Horror Film DETROIT Posted: 13 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT Will it be a match made in heaven or in hell? And, in this case, would hell be the better option? Danish director Kristian Levring may be just gearing up for the world premiere of his new film Salvation in the midnight section in Cannes but he's already planning what comes next. And what comes after his dark western is a full on horror film titled Detroit being scripted by Lars Von Trier. After the news was announced via a cryptic post on the Zentropa website Danish film magazine Soundvenue got in touch with Levring for more details and have been kind enough to provide us with an English translation:'Salvation' director's next film is a horror movie written by Lars von Trier»In the end Lars... |

Fantaspoa 2014 Interview: Bruce LaBruce Talks GERONTOPHILIA And Names His Favorite Filmmakers Posted: 13 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT Bruce LaBruce presented at Fantaspoa what is, in his own words, the most accessible and mainstream effort he has made so far. I'm talking about Gerontophilia, a film about an 18-year-old boy with a fetish for old men. I watched it last night during its one and only screening here in Porto Alegre and thought it was very good. The protagonist, Lake (Pier-Gabriel Lajoie), is in the middle of a relationship with a beautiful girl of his own age when he begins working at a nursing home, taking care of the old men. It's a piece that tackles self-discovery and an honest portrait of people in love, without any explicit sex scenes (though still, and obviously, not for everybody). Director LaBruce was kind enough to... |
Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks NEIGHBORS Posted: 13 May 2014 08:30 AM PDT Chatting this week about the latest film from Nick Stoller, the stoner/frat-comedy Neighbors has a hell of a lot more going for it than the trailers might reveal.Video embedded below... |

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION To Debut In Hong Kong Posted: 13 May 2014 05:36 AM PDT It has just been announced that the latest instalment in Michael Bay's colossal toy commercial movie franchise, Transformers: Age of Extinction, will have its World Premiere in Hong Kong on 19 June. This is a welcome surprise as Hong Kong rarely features on the world stage in this way, but as a substantial part of the film is set in the city, it does make some kind of sense. You may remember the headline-grabbing antics of Michael Bay and his crew last year when the shoot was repeatedly besieged by money-hungry triads and other assorted ne'er-do-wells looking to cash in on Hollywood's A-List working on their turf.No word yet which cast and crew members will be headed into town for the event, but Mark Wahlberg and... |
Posted: 13 May 2014 05:12 AM PDT Earlier today, the famous artist H. R. Giger died in hospital. According to the Swiss press, the famous artist succumbed to injuries he received on Monday during a bad fall. He was 74 years old. H. R. Giger is famous as the designer of the monsters in Ridley Scott's Alien and numerous other incredible, and often nightmarish, pieces of art. Recently, his work was very much in the limelight, thanks to the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, which showed many of Giger's designs for the famous never-made film. To say he will be missed is an understatement. His influence on popular media from the late seventies onward is immeasurable, and can be found in countless films, comic books, paintings and video games. Our thoughts are with him... |
