NOBODY, And More Posted: 02 May 2014 08:30 PM PDT This edition of our biweekly Netflix column focuses on underrated titles popping up in various streaming markets from around the world. We kick things off with an underrated Roger Moore 007 title before moving into Blade Runner-esque sci-fi, Brazilian gangsters, an Oscar nominated butterfly effect drama, rare book investigators, Chicago politics, string theory with Jared Leto, and the proverbial much, much more.... |
Interview: What the Men of THE BACHELOR WEEKEND Have to Say About Stags Posted: 02 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT I love me some Irish men. So sitting across from a trio of triple threat actor/writer/director strapping lads had me all in a tizzy this past week at Tribeca Film Festival."We're coming at you from every angle!" co-writer and co-star of The Bachelor Weekend Peter McDonald joked, flanked by his co-writer and director John Butler and lead Hugh O'Connor. In addition to the exclusive clip we posted on Wednesday, and on the eve of their limited theatrical release in Chicago and on cable VOD/iTunes, here are some snippets from our interview at TFF.The bachelor/bachelorette thing has been done a couple times, so what was your motivation for making this film?Peter McDonald: A lot of those films sell you a bit short on heart, and they don't... |
Posted: 02 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT Given its heartwarming appeal and universally applicable message about cross-cultural relationships, from the western point of view it's not really hard to see why Chiu Keng Guan's The Journey has become Malaysia's highest grossing domestic picture of all time. Considering that the country has a long history of affection with more violent and action-packed productions, Chiu's third feature's encouraging success can actually see a groundbreaking shift among Malaysian audiences. Since its premiere in 2014's Chinese New Year, The Journey's took in around $6 million and is now opening in another countries across Asia. The film's European Premiere took place at Udine Far East Film Festival.Though conventional and calculable, the film has all the elements of a delightfully warm feel-good picture that's meant to inspire and please.... |
Interview: James Moll talks FARMLAND Posted: 02 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT I think it's safe to say that the average person doesn't spend an exorbitant amount of time considering the source of their food supply. Speaking personally, I can't even say my own knowledge of the farming industry extends beyond my exposure through fiction or images like Grant Wood's American Gothic painting. Lucky for me, Farmland is a new documentary that aims to correct my ignorance and shatter my dated stereotypes. The farmers whom director James Moll has chosen to follow are far from old, they don't tote large pitchforks, and they aren't exactly as sheltered as popular myth would lead you to believe. This is mostly because these fairly young farmers are all at least one generation removed from the old school to which these... |
Thailand International Film Destination Festival Wrap Up Posted: 02 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT The 2nd Thailand International Film Destination Festival wrapped on April 29th. The nine day event in Bangkok, is a strange hybrid beast. It is part student film competition, part international film festival, and part industry event. Organised by the Thailand Film Office, the overall message is that Thailand is a great place to shoot films. The films selected for the festival were based on the single qualification that they were approved for shooting by the Thailand Film Office and displayed the range of locations and production capabilities of Thailand. As a showcase for Thailand this was effective; as a program of films, it must be said that the quality was variable. There were a few new films of note.First up was Roy Alfred Jr's Glory Days.... |
Korean Transgender Cop Thriller MAN ON HIGH HEELS Plays It Straight And Looks All The Better For It Posted: 02 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT You'll be forgiven if you cringe a little when you first hear of director Jang Jin's upcoming Korean cop movie Man On High Heels, expecting from the title and the transgender aspect of the story that what is coming is a broad and tasteless comedy. It's not. Instead, judging from the first poster art and trailer, what Jang has delivered here is a gritty and stylish thriller that treats the sexual orientation of its lead character very seriously and looks all the better for it.Ji-wook is a cold-blooded detective who would brutally assault and stop at nothing to catch criminals. However, despite his perfectly masculine appearance, Ji-wook struggles with a secret desire to be a woman. At last, Ji-wook decides to get a sex-change. However,... |
Watch The Trailer For Kim Ki-duk's ONE ON ONE Posted: 02 May 2014 10:30 AM PDT Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk's latest blast of outrage - One On One - is rapidly approaching theatrical release in its homeland and what hath the creator of Pieta, 3 Iron, Bad Guy and The Isle wrought? Take a look at the trailer below for a taste. On May 9th, a female high school student was brutally murdered. There are 7 suspects and 7 shadows that terrorize them. Who are they and which one of them is you?Somewhat surprisingly given Kim's history, this one appears to be skipping the festival circuit entirely, so no word yet on when audiences outside of Korea may be able to see it.... |
When You're A Vampire You Become Very Sexy. Watch The WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS Trailer Now! Posted: 02 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT A big hit at the Sundance film festival - after which it rolled on to Berlin and SXSW with similar results - the first trailer has arrived for New Zealand horror comedy What We Do In The Shadows. Shot on the sly and out of sight by Flight Of The Conchords star Jemaine Clement and acclaimed Boy director Taika Waititi the film is presented as a mock documentary about a trio of vampires sharing an apartment in the modern world. And, yes, it's not hard at all to see why it received such a fantastic response. Check the trailer below.... |
Watch An Exclusive Clip From Dutch Techno Thriller APP Posted: 02 May 2014 09:30 AM PDT Dutch techno thriller App breaks new ground by engaging audiences on not one screen but two, using a sound triggered phone app titled Iris to engage with the audience in real time with additional content just as the movie plays just as the app engages with the lead character on screen. Anna lives with her best friend Sophie, and balances psychology classes with supporting her brother and his recovery following a traumatic motorcycle accident. She's never far from her cellphone, and after a night of partying in the dorms, Anna wakes up groggy and hungover only to find that a new app has been inexplicably added to it. Initially helpful and clever, IRIS soon begins behaving mysteriously, answering personal questions it shouldn't know the answers... |
The Many Faces Of Paul Giamatti Posted: 02 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT This weekend, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrives in the US, after having done a bit of a world tour in other territories. And the most interesting piece of casting in it must surely be Paul Giamatti as the villain known as "The Rhino". He's certainly the biggest reason (maybe even the sole one) for me to go check out this film. Paul Giamatti is one of those actors who you think to be prolific, and suspect to have done dozens of small character parts, but he actually hasn't. It's just that whenever he appears, he steals the scenes he's in, and is instantly memorable! So once again I'm going to use a gallery of eight close-ups of one of my favourite thespians to make a... |
Review: MUCH BETTER THAN YOU Is The Best Latin American Sex Comedy Of The Decade Posted: 02 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT It's maybe the first time in the history of Chilean cinema that a sequel works and might even be considered superior to the first film of a projected series. In this case, the original film by young director Che Sandoval was called You Think You're The Prettiest... (But You're The Sluttiest), which was about a young Chilean man who wandered in the night in the search of sex, just to never find it, was a funny collection of vignettes about the night life of Santiago de Chile. In that 2009 film, one of the funniest moments was when our protagonist talked to, and then stole the hat of an older man, who was also in search of a one night stand. This new film, Much Better... |

The Collective and Bloody Disgusting are producing the latest installment, and there are plenty of familiar names in the lineup of directors involved. MPI Wants Some Vampire Heat In SUMMER OF BLOOD Posted: 02 May 2014 05:00 AM PDT Onur Tukel's hipster vampire comedy Summer of Blood has been nabbed by MPI. The film debuted at Tribeca last month. MPI plans to release the film in cinemas and on VOD/DVD in the Fall. Tukel also stars in the indie as Erik Sparrow, a selfish, schlubby NYC hipster whose miserable life turns around when he meets a vampire in Brooklyn and becomes a blood-sucker himself.MPI's Greg Newman negotiated the deal with XYZ Films' Nate Bolotin on behalf of the filmmakers. Which is why I am writing this instead of Twitch founder and editor, Todd Brown, who is a partner at XYZ Films. ... |
