The Kids Talk Film: GODZILLA

Posted: 03 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Twitch has been on the Internet long enough that many of its writing staff have children old enough to understand and consume media in a way that is both raw and fresh. It might even come with an inkling of consideration afterwards -- it's true that many of us fall in love with the movies when we are very young. Thus, we are offering you the perspective of smaller children as they react to seeing classic filmmaking on the big screen.  Willem (age 11) and Miranda (age 9) took in the original Gojira (aka Godzilla) in its original Japanese form directed by Honda Ishirō. They offer another episode in the ongoing Kids Talk Film series.  It is interesting to see them empathizing as much or...

TFW 2014 Review: ZOMBIE TV Is A Lo-Fi, Low Brow Rom-Com-ZOMnibus

Posted: 03 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

The latest project from Japanese splatter master Nishimura Yoshihiro and friends is a bit of a departure from his usual oeuvre. For this 77 minute blast of madness, Nishimura is joined by a pair of relative newcomers in Makuno Maelie and Tashiro Naoya to create an epileptic fit of all things undead. Zombie TV is not a single narrative, it's a series of roughly two dozen vignettes all crammed into its more than manageable runtime. As one might expect, the film's different sections vary in style and quality, but the good news is that it's very difficult to have the time to get bored, and the content tries really hard to keep the brain from settling into a groove. The Japanese depiction of zombies over the...

Imagine 2014: What The Audiences Like Best

Posted: 03 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT

(Amsterdam audiences can famously not be argued with, so let's just see what they liked best!) This year's Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam had an extraordinary fine line-up of genre movies, resulting in an audience appreciation which was considerably higher than in other years. Films compete at the festival for the SyFy Silver Scream Award, based on audience ratings, and I remember previous editions of the festival where films were slaughtered and booed, and the rating cards weren't so much torn, as totally ripped in half over the lowest possible score. Not so this year, where almost every film got a pretty decent rating from Joe Public. One screening even broke records, but more about that later. The Imagine Festival is always pretty open about its...

BELLE: Miranda Richardson And Gugu Mbatha-Raw On Exploring A Rarely Seen Part Of History

Posted: 03 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Here's my chat with the stars of Belle, the Georgian-era biopic of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate child of a British Lord and an African slave, who was raised into nobility and whose influence helped end slavery in the UK. Miranda Richardson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw talked about this rarely explored time in English history. Miranda RichardsonThe Lady Miz Diva:  BELLE brings up the seldom seen subject of slavery in the British Empire, was that part of what brought you to the project? Miranda Richardson:  Oh, of course.  I just go "What? What is this story? Oh, it's a true story? I don't believe it. Well, why haven't I heard about it? Why isn't it in schools?" Even though I like looking at the odd country...
