WILD IN BLUE Promises Perverse Thrills In NSFW Trailer

Posted: 16 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Out of the Cannes marketplace comes the disturbing, intriguing trailer for Matthew Berkowitz's Wild in Blue, which, at the very least looks as though it won't be shying away from the more explicit aspects of its sociopath-with-a-movie-camera love story. The trailer heavy on flesh, blood and sadistic imagery, but vague about the plot. Fortunately, we have a synopsis! Check both out below. A story about a madman with a movie camera, that thinks he's smarter than you. He's a narcissist. He's a nihilist, a sexual sadist and killer of innocent women. His name is Charlie, and this is his world: a place of evil, violence and perversion, where only his camera tells the truth. He has set out to make an honest film - no...

First INTERSTELLAR Trailer: Christopher Nolan Sends Farmer Matthew McConaughey Into Space

Posted: 16 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

We're all going to die unless Matthew McConaughey saves us. The first full trailer for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar identifies a crisis on Earth that has led former pilot and engineer Cooper, played by a weathered-looking McConaughey, to become a farmer. Now the farmer (and family man) must return to his piloting and engineering ways in order to join a mission to save mankind, as explained by a very grave Michael Caine. No doubt there will be more to the story than that, and there will be future trailers that expand upon the roles played by Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Burstyn, and Bill Irwin, but for now, there is Matthew McConaughey and his daughter, torn apart by the farmer's desire to save mankind. Interstellar is due in cinemas...

New To Netflix: Miscellany Or Potpourri?

Posted: 16 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

In this edition of our biweekly Netflix column, the complete lack of focus is exactly the point. From a huge Oscar-winning animated film to a micro-sized black and white period piece on the early days of computer chess, and from mo-cap'd Hollywood rock 'em sock 'em robots to a dark comedy about grieving and shoplifting, there is nothing if not variety on offer. Onwards....

Cannes 2014 Review: A GIRL AT MY DOOR Is Korean Cinema At Its Finest

Posted: 16 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Screening in the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section this year is A Girl at My Door, a film that is so well-wrought that one can't help but be swept up in its artistry, which effortlessly plunges us into an intellectual reverie. The film features the return of Bae Doo-na, following back-to-back Hollywood blockbusters, and teenage actress Kim Sae-ron. It also boasts Lee Chang-dong as a producer, whose influence over the film will not go unnoticed. A Girl at My Door stars Bae Doo-na as Young-nam, a police captain who has been forced to transfer to a remote seaside town following an incident in her previous district. There, she meets Do-hee, a precocious teenager who is regularly beaten by her drunkard of a father....

The Many Faces Of Bill Paxton

Posted: 16 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Looking through the roster of films premiering this week, one actor's name popped out immediately to me, almost jumping from my computer screen. Because it said that in Million Dollar Arm, one of the supporting characters is played by Bill Paxton. I was a teen in the eighties, so this name conjures up a bubble of nice movie memories. Bill Paxton was easily noticeable then already, an actor not afraid of chewing the scenery with his shit-eating grin, portraying a fine array of memorable assholes. As far as I know, he is the only actor to be killed by a terminator, an alien, AND a predator! How cool is that?! And of course, I later noticed he was a damn fine actor in quieter roles...
