Tribeca 2014 Review: MISCONCEPTION Challenges What You Think You Know About Overpopulation

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 09:15 PM PDT

Jessica Yu has created some of the finest and most formally innovative documentaries of the past decade, such as In the Realms of the Unreal (2004) and Protagonist (2007). Her latest film Misconception, which recently had its world premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, is somewhat of a step down from these in formal terms, as it is much closer to traditional documentaries than her previous work. Still, Jessica Yu brings considerable style and verve to her examination of the issue of the world population explosion, with a triptych of compelling stories that bring the vast parameters of this complex and often overwhelming issue down to a human level. Also, the film provocatively challenges received wisdom about the actual nature of the problem of...

Udine 2014 Review: Girl-Powered GIRL'S BLOOD Mixes Violence And Nudity In A Strangely Mesmerizing Manner

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed that such a film actually exists. Better yet, I'm now practically sure that underground cat-fighting clubs such as Girl's Blood can be found not only in Roppongi, but also in some of the other entertainment districts in Tokyo. What's perhaps most interesting about Sakamoto Koichi's Girl's Blood is that it mixes lesbian love and hilariously choreographed fights in a strangely hypnotizing manner, and shifts between the two without ever losing the unmistakably bold appreciation for high-octane spectacle. Graphic and loud scenes that would likely serve as soft-core porn underline the dreamy intermissions in an otherwise fast paced and ass-kicking scenario. In order to escape from the wearisome routine of a daily life, girls from very different backgrounds join...

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2: Producers Avi Arad And Matt Tolmach Talk Colour Blind Casting, Future Films And Death Threats

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

From a fan to the father of Marvel Studios; I sat down for a chat with legendary producer Avi Arad during New York press for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  Mr. Arad and co-producer Matt Tolmach talked of future films, colour blind casting, sifting through the immense Marvel Universe and how much fan input influences them... even the death threats. Be warned: SPOILERS ABOUND!The Lady Miz Diva:  I recall some fans complaining there was too much drama in the last film and not enough action.  This film felt much more action-packed than the previous chapter.  Was the increase in action a natural storyline progression, or were you being attentive to the comments and reaction of the audience?Matt Tolmach:  Both.  I mean, we are very attentive to...

Newport Beach 2014 Review: THIS LAST LONELY PLACE, A Fine Tuned, Pitch Dark Noir

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Picture it: The gun in the lap of a beautiful dame. A once powerful man hounded by the shadows of his triumphs. The cabbie with a kind heart and worn eyes. A fresh start. That last trick. The final score. And then there's the city; that never ending sprawl, a throbbing vein of head lights and stop lights, boney roadways to nowhere, and nothing... Los Angeles: The ultimate Femme Fatale. Steve Anderson's third feature, This Last Lonely Place, for lack of better phrasing, colorizes classic noir and pulp tropes, bringing them into a time when economic woes, low American morale and a potent melancholy and paranoia rule the day. In other words, desperation itself has rarely felt so desperate. Stoic Sam Taylor (Rhys Coiro), hawk-eyed...

Destroy All Monsters: Ebertfest Marches On

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 08:30 AM PDT

This week I attended the 16th annual Roger Ebert Film Festival in Champaign, Illinois, the first installment of the festival put together after Ebert's death. (The 15th annual festival, last year, was a week from taking the stage when Ebert passed away.) I was in Champaign for the 14th annual festival, two years ago, which turned out to be the last Ebert was able to attend. There are lifers who have been attending the festival since its inception, all the way back to when it was called the Roger Ebert Overlooked Film Festival, and I envy them. They have a continuity with the programming that becomes more appealing to me with each passing year. I'm from Toronto, and the semi-retired film professor who wrote my...

SHREW'S NEST: First Poster From Iglesia Produced Horror Premieres

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT

For what appears to be the first time in his long and acclaimed career Spanish genre icon Alex de la Iglesia is donning the producer's hat on a project he is not also directing with Juanfer Andrés and Esteban Roel's Shrew's Nest. Iglesia is joined in his producers role by Carolina Bang and Kiko Martinez with Blancanieves' Pedro Ruigómez on as line producer and make up effects by Pan's Labyrinth veteran Pepe Quetglas. Here's how the directors describe their creation:With our first feature, Shrews' Nest, we're looking to strike a balance between our two favorite types of movies. On the one hand, genre films -- and more specifically, horror, one of the genres that has taken up the most viewing hours of our lives. But...
