Slovakia´s biggest film festival, Art Film Fest, recently wrapped up its 22nd edition. The principal objective of the festival is to promote young cinema and, of course, the national one. The main competition is thus dedicated to feature debuts whereas other sections cover European cinema, cutting-edge films, a special section for East cinema, Late Night Show for genre and lighter fare, Slovak films and one section showcasing national cinema of a selected country (this year dedicated exclusively to works of Alan Clarke). Furthermore, the programming was set up to present the latest crop from A-list festivals such as Venice, Berlin and Cannes. The festival scored a special position because it is actually the first place where audiences can watch compelling titles directly from La Croisette. In...

PiFan 2014: Preview Part 2 - World Fantastic Cinema

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 01:04 AM PDT

With just over a week until PiFan, the biggest celebration of genre cinema anywhere in Asia, Team Twitch is barely able to contain our excitement. So instead of sweating and fidgeting uncomfortably, we're putting our anticipation to practical use and previewing some of our hot tips and most anticipated titles for the fest. Today it is my turn to dissect the ungainly World Fantastic Cinema programme - an orgy of 44 titles from all corners of the globe that makes up the backbone of the PiFan showcase. There are definitely a few I can recommend right off the bat, namely Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi's uproarious vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows (which Ryland reviewed here), Jerome Sable's eccentric, ambitious slasher musical Stage Fright...

SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE Trailer: Sharks In Manhattan

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 03:30 PM PDT

Because I don't have cable, I missed out on the gleeful first broadcast of Sharknado when it aired on the SyFy Channel and became a social media sensations. Thousands (or millions) of people watched it ironically and reveled in its ridiculousness. Now, I certainly have my soft spots for movies that are not necessarily "good," in a technical or creative sense, yet exude a cheerful desire to please, even if they fall short of their goals. But I can't in all good conscience join in ridiculing such movies; after all, making any movie is hard work for everyone concerned. In my reviews, I tend to I look for the good points, point out the bad points, and let the viewer decide what to do about it. With...

THE GANG'S ALL HERE! Busby Berkeley Joins The Masters Of Cinema

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Eureka Entertainment has announced today that Busby Berkeley's 1943 technicolor musical comedy The Gang's All Here will be joining the Masters of Cinema series in a brand new Blu-ray edition on 15 September. I must confess to being something of a Berkeley novice and know precious little about his films other than their famous intricately choreographed dance numbers, which became something of a calling card for the filmmaker. I know Edgar Wright is a fan, as is Spielberg judging by the opening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, so this new release seems the perfect opportunity to dive into the director's canon. The Blu-ray boasts a new & exclusive full-length audio commentary with critics Glenn Kenny and Farran Smith Nehme and film historian Ed Hulse,...

Joel Edgerton Starring Thriller FELONY Gets A Bad Poster, Great Trailer

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Mixed marks to the marketing department at Australia's Roadshow Films for their work on the Joel Edgerton written and starring dramatic thriller Felony. The poster released last week? Really not good. The freshly arrived trailer? That's a whole other matter. Here's how the Toronto International Film Festival described the film when it premiered:Malcolm Toohey (Edgerton) has it all: a terrific family and a reputation as an upright cop, a job he loves. One night, after celebrating a successful arrest, he makes a terrible mistake, then, to cover up that mistake, he makes the decision to lie about it -- with tragic consequences. Complicit in the affair is senior officer Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson), an assertive watchdog of "the brethren," whose new partner Jim Melic (Jai Courtney)...

Belgian director Fabrice du Welz is having himself something of a year. One - Alleluia - was selected to the Cannes Film Festival. And the other? The other is Colt 45, which has just released one hell of a stylish trailer leading up to its French theatrical release.Police armourer and firearms instructor Vincent Milès is a shooting ace. Robots Revolt In High Octane Proof Of Concept For BOT WARS

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 08:30 AM PDT

While the premise for JV Kade's young adult scifi novel Bot Wars is nothing particularly original - the premise of robotic helpers gaining consciousness and rebelling for more rights lifts liberally from I, Robot and The Terminator making several other stops along the way - but these things are all about the execution and knowing your target audience and so it has proved rather popular. Which no doubt has a little something to do with how it crossed the paths of young filmmakers Steffen Hacker and Alexander Kiesl who have put together a very impressive proof of concept reel for a proposed feature adaptation. The full proof of concept video reportedly runs around five minutes and while that long reel is not yet available online they...

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: New Extended Trailer Brings Back The Quirk With Loads Of New Footage

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 07:45 AM PDT

Ah, Mr Gunn. There you are. Nice to see you again. After a delightfully quirky promotional campaign befitting the sensibilities of Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn - helmer of Slither and Super - it seems the folk at Marvel got a little spooked leading up to the full theatrical trailer of the film and made that one something with all the edges and oddities buffed out of it. No ooga chaka. No Peter Serafinowicz. And while it might have made the marketing suits happy it certainly did nothing at all for those of us who want to see this purely because it's a Marvel movie that feels so very, very different from every other Marvel movie. And Marvel seems to have gotten that message...

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 07:30 AM PDT

As always here at Twitch, it's one of our goals to keep cinephiles, and casual viewers alike, abreast of where the river known as cinema flows, and more than ever, we are finding that its toward the world of streaming content. While a plethora of festival films make their way to theaters or robust VOD releases, an equal number end up online through various digital menas. Our "Now Streaming" headline is a way to highlight some of these releases that might otherwise slip through the cracks.Today, it's Theodore Collatos' Dipso, a micro-budget feature greased by a raw naturalism only infused further by its cast of non-actors. Last year when I covered independent cinema through my Indie Beat column, Collatos' short experimental doc Berlin Day To...
