Now on Blu-ray: LE WEEK-END Captures The Pleasures And Pains Of A Relationship

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 09:00 PM PDT

This is a rare jewel of a movie. Le Week-End follows Nick and Meg, enacted brilliantly by Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan, a British couple whose longtime marriage faces a turning point during a weekend in Paris. Directed judiciously by Roger Michell from an exquisite original screenplay by Hanif Kureishi, and photographed beautifully by Nathalie Durand, the film captures the nuances of a long-term relationship, the ups and downs, the easy asides and the sidelong glances, the heat of anger and the warmth of touch, the regrets and the resentments and the recriminations. It begins, comfortably enough, on a train but soon enough becomes awkward when Meg doesn't like the tiny hotel room Nick has secured for them. ("It's beige," she says, petulantly, and storms...

Malaysia's Mamat Khalid Shifts Gears With Crime Comedy THE ADVENTURES OF AMIR & LOQMAN

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Malaysia's Mamat Khalid has got himself a good thing going. The director has been packing audiences in to theaters en masse with his hugely popular series of 'Banana Village' horror comedies for a few years now, the films rough and ready roasting of local tradition proving a massive success. But not one to rest on past successes, Khalid is the sort of guy who is simply always working and while village humor has been his stock in trade for a while now - even films not part of the Banana Village series such as the recent Rock Oo had a similar setting - he's breaking things up with the upcoming crime comedy The Adventures Of Amir & Loqman (Amir & Loqman Pergi Ke Laut).Amir &...

Guanajuato 2014: Roger Corman In Mexico, Plus Full Festival Lineup

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 09:30 AM PDT

The Guanajuato International Film Festival revealed yesterday all the details for its upcoming seventeenth edition, which is going to be celebrated from Friday, July 25 to Sunday, August 3. This is one of Mexico's top festivals and this year's lineup turned out to be both exciting and surprising, especially thanks to the fact that GIFF is paying homage to B movie king Roger Corman. Producer of Death Race 2000, Piranha, Forbidden World, and hundreds others; director of such films as Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Little Shop of Horros, and The Pit and the Pendulum; and mentor of several consolidated directors, including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, and Jonathan Demme; Roger Corman is quite simply a living film legend. At age 88, Corman is...

Gus Van Sant Taking The Helm Of Hollywood DEATH NOTE?

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Well, here's a surprising pairing of director and material ...While it's been known for quite some time that there was a Hollywood adaptation of hugely popular Japanese manga Death Note - already adapted to the big screen in Japan - there's been no news on the project in quite a while. Shane Black was reportedly attached to direct as recently as last year but has moved on and now, according to The Tracking Board, Black has been replaced by Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant. Black leaves behind the current draft of the script, which he co-wrote along with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.Van Sant is, to put it mildly, a surprising choice to tell the story of a high school student who discovers...

AMBIANCÉ. The Longest. Film. Ever. (Watch The 72-minute Teaser)

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 08:30 AM PDT

43,200 minutes... 720 hours... 30 days... 1 month... Coming in 2020.Say what you will about experimental film, there can be no faulting Anders Weberg's ambition. He has completed the first 280 hours of his 720-hour long magnum opus, Ambiancé - "the last film I'll ever make" - which is scheduled to premiere in 6 years, around the world, simultaneously. He will then destroy the film after this single screening. This seems like either the most masochistic or enlightened plan ever devised. It's worth noting, however, that Weberg himself coined the term "Peer-to-peer art" (p2p-art) to describe art that is shared with a network peer, and then immediately destroyed by the artist. With the original work annihilated, the art only lives on insofar as peers continue to perpetuate...

Destroy All Monsters: HARRY POTTER Between This World And The Next

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 08:00 AM PDT

J.K. Rowling wrote a new short story set in the Harry Potter universe and posted it to Pottermore this week, which must have spiked password reminder requests for Pottermore by something like 10,000%. The story was an instance of my not knowing how much I wanted a thing until I had it. It's not even that good of a story - it's not even a story, really - but a paragraph or two into it, and I was taken straight back. Rowling, in the meanwhile, is writing the new Harry Potter feature film franchise, the first of a trilogy set in the Potterverse, some 70 years prior to the events of the existing film/book series. I've no idea what incented her to do this -...

Acting Legend John Hurt And Co-Writer Kelly Masterson Talk SNOWPIERCER

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Many moons past, at an NYC dinner where the soju flowed freely, Director Bong Joon-ho revealed his plans to adapt the French graphic novel, Le Transperceneige, as an international production. Five years later, Snowpiercer has finally barreled into US cinemas.  I had the chance to speak with two of its passengers; Before the Devil Knows You're Dead scribe, Kelly Masterson, who co-wrote Snowpiercer's screenplay, and British acting legend (and a xenomorph's best pal), John Hurt.  Both gentlemen sat with me to discuss the ambitious project, including the Weinstein cutting controversy.  John HurtThe Lady Miz Diva:  What is it that brought you to this film?John Hurt:  Well, he's sitting over there {Points at Bong Joon-ho}.  He's as cool as they come.  I guess it was done...
