Fantastic Fest 2014: Awards Go To IT FOLLOWS, THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA, ALLELUIA, And More

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 02:30 AM PDT

Not to wax too nostalgic, but the awards show for Fantastic Fest 2014 is quite a bit different from the first one I attended back in 2006 for the festival's second edition. For one thing, it's much more elaborate. For another, there are many more awards. For yet another, it's no longer held in a bar down the street on the last night of the festival, mixed in along with other bar patrons. Nowadays, it's a highly coveted ticket, held on Monday evening, although one thing has remained consistent: the winners are expected to chug a glass of beer. If the winners are not present, someone else is enlisted to drink a beer in their honor. For legal reasons, that's probably as much as we can say...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: REDEEMER Delivers Awesome MMA-Inspired Action

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 06:36 PM PDT

Ernesto Diaz Esponiza has long been a favorite director in the Twitch world. His impressive ability to keep the action flowing while dabbling in different subgenres has always been commendable. In Mirageman, Diaz Espinsoza married lo-fi action with the tropes of the super hero story. In Mandrill, it was the spy genre. And in Bring Me the Head of the Machine Gun Woman, the Chilean director turned things in a decisively more female orientation with this exploitation spectacular. This year, Ernesto returns with Redeemer - a movie that is not only another foray into a new action subgenre - this the MMA-inspired martial arts actioner, but it also marks the return of the director's action muse. If you missed Marko Zaror during his absence from...

Win A Copy Of Grady Hendrix's HORRORSTOR!

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 02:30 PM PDT

Ladies and gentlemen, if you're not yet familiar with the peculiar force of nature known as Grady Hendrix then prepare yourself. The co-founder of the New York Asian Film Festival, the man behind the stellar Kaiju Shakedown blog - which has run variously on Variety and now Film Comment - and an occasional (and very much beloved) contributor to things here at Twitch, Hendrix has gone and written himself a novel and we've got five copies to give away.Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. In The Ring With BitTorrent: Todd's Complete Text From The Fantastic Debates

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 01:30 PM PDT

The night before last I took the opportunity to shake hands with Leonard Maltin. I was wearing only a pair of shorts at the time, sweat streaming down my torso and I may or may not have been bleeding. "Thank you so much for coming," I said. "You guys are all fucking nuts," was his reply.Well, yes ... given the circumstances it would be hard to argue against that point. The occasion was the Fantastic Debates, an exercise in ritual violence that has become a cornerstone event at Fantastic Fest in which combatants square off for two rounds of point-counterpoint debate followed by two rounds of boxing. This was my third time participating, though only my second actually fighting - my first go around was...

SPRING Is Sprung For U.S. Distribution By Drafthouse Films And FilmBuff

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 12:30 PM PDT

A mesmerizing picture that played very well in the heart of Texas at Fantastic Fest, Spring has been sprung for U.S. distribution by Drafthouse Films and FilmBuff. Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead (Resolution), the film follows a young man (Lou Taylor Pucci) who flees to Italy to get away from problems both personal and legal. There he catches the eye of an Italian woman (Nadia Hilker); sparks fly, and everything should be peachy keen, except for the dark secret she's harboring in her body. The film enjoyed its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, where our own Kurt Halfyard issued his verdict: By merging two wildly disparate types, the seductive monster film with the budding travel romance, Spring creates a something...

Blowouts, Subconscious Beats: An Interview With HARDKOR DISKO Director Krzysztof Skonieczny

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Back in March I had a chance to talk with Krzysztof Skonieczny about his experimental, thrilling debut Hardkor Disko. I did not know a lot about him back then besides the fact that he's always busy; working on sets, shooting music videos, giving workshops and writing. I was even a bit afraid that to some extent he might be like Marcin (Marcin Kowalczyk) - the protagonist his film - who does not speak a lot, does not raise questions, and just prefers to do things quietly his own way. But Skonieczny turned out to be a talkative and open-minded person who cherishes a real dialogue. On the other hand he is indeed a truly independent artist who knows what he wants and what to do...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: FUTURE SHOCK! THE STORY OF 2000AD Argues And Excites

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 11:01 AM PDT

A wonderfully exhaustive documentary, Future Shock! The Story of 2000AD argues pointedly that the British comic book deserves more recognition for its influence on modern popular culture. Far better known in its native land than in the rest of the world, 2000AD has spawned an amazing assortment of creative talent, an array of writers and artists that includes Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Neil Gaiman, yet it began in 1977 as a step back for Pat Mills (pictured below), the creator and first editor. His previous book, Action, had been banned in Britain for its 'extreme' content, and so he was forced to retrench by pushing all new stories into the future. Soon enough, however, Mills discovered that readers were responding to elements of the...

Zero Must Equal 100%: An Interview with Terry Gilliam

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Photo: Jay Brooks/SagaBrazil was one of the first films that got me interested in the medium as an art form, as opposed to just entertainment. Interestingly, I had seen the trailer before a screening of Jeunet and Caro's City of Lost Children, a film very much influenced by Gilliam's aesthetic. What led me to that film, I don't quite remember, but as soon as I saw that Sam Lowry miniature soaring through those cotton ball clouds, I knew I'd be taking a trip to Brazil. But that wasn't my first exposure to Gilliam. One of my favorite films growing up was Time Bandits. I would watch it over and over again on HBO, fascinated by its cast of little people and their wacky adventures. It is...

Exclusive Clip: THE PACT 2 - Don't Open The Medicine Cabinet

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Heading for release in U.S. theaters on October 10, The Pact 2 picks up where Nicholas McCartney's unsettling horror thriller left off. In the first film, Caity Lopez starred as Annie, a troubled young woman who came home for her mother's funeral. She discovered that "home," or, more specifically, the house itself, harbored very troubling things. Now, in The Pact 2 ... A series of brutal murders lead authorities to believe the Judas killer is back and Annie (Caity Lotz, Arrow, Mad Men) returns home for the final showdown. The film, directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, also stars Camilla Luddington (Grey's Anatomy), Scott Michael Foster (Halt and Catch Fire, Greek), Patrick Fischler (2 Guns, Mad Men, Californication), and Haley Hudson (The Pact).Distributed by IFC Midnight,...

New HORSEHEAD (FIEVRE) Clip Suggests Terrible Things To Come

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Here's an ominous new clip from the Fantastic Fest selection Horsehead (Fievre), Romain Basset's art-horror tale of family secrets and lucid dreams. Or rather, lucid nightmares, if this clip and the previously released trailer are any indication. In this scene, a girl discovers a notebook full of creepy drawings and foreboding messages, which, based on the still above, you can probably be sure will all come back to haunt her in the real world later. Check out the synopsis and clip below. The film will screen Tuesday, September 23 at Fantastic Fest. Since her childhood, Jessica has been haunted by recurrent nightmares whose meaning escapes her. This peculiarity has led her to study the psychophysiology of dreams to try and understand the origin of her nightmares. Following the death...
