Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: AUTOMATA, Surreal Science Fiction At Its Best

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Spanish filmmaker Gabe Ibáñez's long-awaited second feature Autómata is an intense and gripping dystopian story, bordering on European surrealism within a classical narrative. Certainly, many current films present a weary and negative view of humanity's future, be it death by plague, war or environmental disaster. In Autómata, humanity might be ending with a whimper, but the planet, and the sentient beings it might leave behind, suggest a cyclical mythology in which people might be just a blip, but not without substance.Set in the mid-21st century in an unknown city, when desertification has decimated the global population and robots do most of the dirty work, Antonio Baderas plays Jacq, an insurance agent who checks on people's claims of defective robots. The robots are supposed to adhere...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN Morphs Into A Whole New Thing

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Note to filmmakers: If you capture the legendary Alejandro Jodorowsky in conversation with another filmmaker and he turns to the camera to ask you a question, be sure to lead with that. Wisely, that's what first-time filmmaker Liv Corfixen does with her new documentary, My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn. Jodorowsky is speaking with Nicolas Winding Refn, who appears to be seeking the older man's counsel. The veteran director dispenses a nub of wisdom, and then turns his attention to Corfixen, blithely ignoring conventionality. There is no "fourth wall" in modern documentaries -- reality shows have broken our collective spirit, and we know that cameras are everywhere -- yet Jodorowsky's forthright inquiry sets the tone for the movie as a whole: it's awkward, unplanned,...

Review: PROJECT WILD THING, A Well-Grown, Multi-Layered Doc

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 09:01 AM PDT

David Bond wants you to get out. Get outside, that is. Soak up some sun! Frolic in a field! Meet some bugs! Hug a tree, if you're so inclined. He's armed with business cards, brochures, t-shirts, and a website. Yes, he's got the statistics to convince you why staying inside and staring at screens will kill you faster versus how being in Nature (capitalized, since it's a product now!) can help us all live longer. But in his wisdom and well-intentioned grandstanding (the actually two mesh quite well), he knows that nothing gets to viewers like a personal story. Project Wild Thing, a title better suited for a YouTube promo, is one of the best such efforts in a while. As Bond's quest topically stair-steps (upward...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: WASTELANDER PANDA: EXILE Takes Its Anthropomorphic Oddity Very Seriously

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Victoria Cocks' post-apocalyptic saga of an anthropomorphic panda trekking across a great barren wasteland in search of redemption is remarkably restrained in its treatment of this absurd concept. Wastelander Panda: Exile's greatest asset is, without a doubt, its commitment to world building, as well as its uncanny ability to remove any but the slightest hints of acknowledgment of its own insanity. I can't say for sure that I am 100% sold on the project, but it is that same commitment that gives me pause and keeps me from dismissing the thing out of hand. Wastelander Panda: Exile is a uniquely Australian oddity that should not exist, but it does, and that is an achievement in and of itself.Issac has commited a sin. The seven-foot panda with...
