Win Miike Takashi's LESSON OF EVIL On DVD Or Blu-ray! Posted: 04 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT Our good friends over at Third Window Films will be releasing Miike Takashi's wonderfully deranged Lesson Of Evil on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 29 September, and we have 3 copies of the film up for grabs - on the format of your choice!Lesson of Evil is Miike's welcome return to his exploitation roots, after a few years experimenting with goofy kids films (Yatterman, Ninja Kids!) and austere period epics (13 Assassins, Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai). Ito Hideaki stars as handsome middle-school English teacher Mr. Hasumi, who wins over even the most reluctant of students with his charismatic and engaging teaching methods. However, before long we realise Hasumi is actually a mentally unhinged serial killer, who begins targeting his own pupils. To quote... |
Watch A Clip From Joe Dante's Rom-Zom-Com BURYING THE EX Posted: 03 Sep 2014 06:30 PM PDT What's this? A clip from a new Joe Dante horror comedy? Well, yes please, though it should be said that I'm somewhat of two minds on Burying The Ex. On the one hand, it's new Joe Dante and any new Joe Dante is a good thing. He's not been on screen nearly often enough in recent years and has a strangely hard time getting projects going for such a beloved director. But, on the other hand ... well, there have been rather a lot of romantic zombie comedies lately and not only does it feel like Joe is coming to this particular party a little late it's also very hard to see how, with Life After Beth freshly released with middling results, this will help... |
Rocking Star Manchu Manoj Returns In CURRENT THEEGA Teaser! Posted: 03 Sep 2014 06:00 PM PDT I have a lot of favorite actors, but my favorite performer is probably Tollywood's Manchu Manoj. Manoj is the son of a famous actor in Andhra Pradesh in India, but he's happily blazing his own path in the world of romantic action comedies. Over the last 5 years, he's come on strong with a string of entertaining, if not altogether coherent, action films like Mr. Nokia, Vedam (an ensemble piece), UKUP, and Potugadu, so anything with his name attached instantly gets me excited."Rocking Star" Manchu Manoj gives every performance 100% of his physical and emotional effort, doing all his own stunts, even the insane ones he should probably pass along to professionals. Manoj isn't the greatest actor in the world, but what he lacks in... |
Venice 2014 Review: Mortality And Desire Mingle And Dance in REVIVRE Posted: 03 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT Returning for his 102nd feature, the indefatigable Im Kwon-taek continues his move away from period and cultural fare with the melancholic Revivre, pairing up once again with the equally venerable screen legend Ahn Sung-ki. Somberly shot and deliberately paced, Im's latest is a thoughtful and pellucid perlustration of mortality and desire. Pharma company marketing director Mr. Oh leads a successful career but when his wife enters the final stages of cancer his priorities begin to change. Though he cares tenderly for his sick partner, he finds himself distracted by Ms. Choo, a beautiful subordinate at work. Following a four-year battle, his wife succumbs to her illness, yet work obligations draw him right back into a major project, to the point of holding a design meeting... |
Posted: 03 Sep 2014 12:30 PM PDT Things have been fairly quiet where Ana Lily Amirpour's Farsi language vampire picture A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is concerned since its premiere in Sundance but with international releases for the picture gearing up we should see that change in the near future as new promotional materials make their way online.Case in point: A new trailer for the film prepared for the French market. Yes, the fact that the spoken language is Farsi and this is a French trailer means no English subtitles which is somewhat of a drawback but the imagery in the film is so incredibly striking that there is plenty to enjoy here whether you understand the dialogue or not.Take a look below for a taste of one of the... |
Hooray For Hollywood! Come For The Weather, Stay For The Contacts Posted: 03 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT During my travels, I often get asked by people (both in and outside the Industry): what do I think are some of the keys to a "Hollywood-level" career? There are various things that I offer as examples (being born to a billion-dollar director or studio head comes to mind) but one answer is always at the top of the list: proximity. And, for reasons I can never quite understand, the response I almost universally receive to that facet is a queasy look and some version of this: "But what if I don't want to leave 'DREAM-HAMLET-X' for Los Angeles?" To that, I say -- no problem. Just enjoy being a medium-size fish in a small pond. Yes, there are other North American cities with a... |
Posted: 03 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT Through his early years Japanese cult auteur Miike Takashi built himself a very well earned reputation as a sort of patron saint of the id, the feverish imaginings of his subconscious spilling out in wild and unpredictable gusts of blood, violence, and just plain bizarre imagery across the screen. His pace of work was frenetic and the results often unruly and undisciplined with a high degree of waste but when things clicked they really clicked and a cult icon was born. In more recent years we've seen another side of the director, films such as 13 Assassins and Hara-Kiri showcasing a director developing a deft touch with complex characters while elevating the technical craft of his work to entirely new levels. The result has been something... |
THE BABADOOK, HOUSEBOUND, And DEAD SNOW 2 Round Off Saskatoon Fantastic's Lineup Posted: 03 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT The programmers of the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival (formerly Dark Bridges) finally settled on the rest of our lineup this year. As was previously announced the festival already includes Zero Theorem, Mood Indigo, Cold in July and Life After Beth. Rounding off this year's edition are a number of festival favorites and standouts. There are a lot of familiar names in our lineup because heck, these films are just too good not to share them with the audience in Saskatoon. So we're going to scare the pants of Saskatoon with Aussie chiller The Babadook. We have added tension breaker, the Kiwi horror comedy Housebound. The festival will end with some good old Nazi Zombie action with Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead. We've got Korean action epic Kundo:... |
Posted: 03 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT It was back in 2013 that writer-director-star Matt Johnson and a team of super talented collaborators sent shock waves through the indie film scene with The Dirties. A largely improvised feature shot on an absolute shoestring of a budget The Dirties became one of the most acclaimed indies of the year, winning the Grand Jury prize at Slamdance and the Next Wave Award at Fantastic Fest while also picking up awards from the Toronto and Vancouver film critics' associations and a nomination for a Canadian Screen Award - the local equivalent of the Oscar. Kevin Smith released the film on his label and there was something of a feeding frenzy around Johnson which saw him snapped up to write the big screen adaptation of Encyclopedia... |

Review: MEMPHIS, A Mesmerizing Meditation On The American South Posted: 03 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Dusk. A blue summer day ending on a worn and warm boulevard. The pin prick glow of street lamps dazzle in the distance. A figure lumbers down the block. A hat tipped to one side, he is lost in thought. A walker. A dreamer. A dream walker. This is musician Willis Earl Beal. The city he wanders is Memphis: a relict of American folklore, dogged, dilapidated, and so full of life. Life that is quiet and cracked. Life young and old. So much life the summer doesn't know what to do with it all. And so the breeze just blows through the trees, and Willis walks on. Tim Sutton's second feature Memphis is that rare and soulful film that causes one to remember why... |
Destroy All Monsters: Celebrity Boobs! Boobs! Boobs! Posted: 03 Sep 2014 08:01 AM PDT So: this week, some sexual predators on the internet released private photos of various female celebrities, including fan-favourite Jennifer Lawrence. They did this, I imagine, because the actions of various terrorists in the gamer community last week weren't quite enough of a nail in the coffin of any notion of masculine respectability left on the planet earth. Thanks, predators and terrorists! It's awesome having a penis this week. (What it's like to be male while other males are behaving this way is so entirely beside the point, so I won't dwell on it - but I will say that if #NotAllMen was an utterly moronic, if at least halfway understandable, response to the #YesAllWomen movement earlier this summer, the events of the past week have... |
Posted: 03 Sep 2014 07:31 AM PDT Nick Cave fans in the city rejoice once more! I know who you are. I'm pretty sure I saw lots of yous this summer at the Prospect Park Bandshell where he performed as part of this year's Celebrate Brooklyn! That was some performance, wasn't it? With the theatrical release of 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH, the groundbreaking new film on celebrated rock legend, Drafthouse Films in association with Film Forum, have announced a special screening of the film followed by a live performance and Q&A session with Cave, directors Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth. The exclusive off-site screening will take place at the Town Hall in Manhattan's midtown on Saturday, September 20th.Here are the details:AUSTIN, TX - September 2nd, 2014 - Drafthouse Films, the film distribution... |
Posted: 03 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk's Moebius hit limited release and VOD platforms across the US on Friday and in connection with the release we had the chance to ask the director a small handful of questions. Curious why there's no dialogue in the film? Or why he has one actor playing multiple parts? So were we! Read on!You're no stranger to mute characters, but why did you feel the need to use no dialogue in Moebius? Did you feel that the story spoke for itself? The films I make often have limited dialogue or muted main characters. However, all of the characters are muted in this film. I wanted to give emphasis to each scene through noises in the film such as screaming, crying, laughing and other... |
