Venice 2014 Review: Kim Ki-duk Off His Game With ONE ON ONE

Posted: 03 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

Enfant terrible Kim Ki-duk returns with his 20th feature One On One, opening the Venice Days sidebar this year with an uncharacteristically plot-and-character-heavy offering. With an overt social agenda and a familiar revenge narrative, the film appears to be primed for a larger audience than much of the divisive cineaste's work. But with a rushed production schedule and comparable lack of poetry (however gritty) and wit than his previous efforts, it proves to be one of the director's least satisfying outings. A high school girl is abducted and murdered for unknown reasons. Following her death, a secret vigilante group known as the "Shadows" forms to avenge her by punishing the many people responsible for the attack. Men are beaten, gagged and brought to a secret...

Toronto 2014: First BACKCOUNTRY Clip Confirms You're In Bear Country

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 09:00 PM PDT

See, now, this is why I'm hesitant about visiting Canada and heading into some beautiful woods there, because I'm afraid something like the events depicted in Backcountry will happen to me. Set to enjoy its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, September 8, Backcountry is based on a true story. According to the official synopsis: A bear attack thriller reminiscent of true-life survival stories like 127 Hours and gritty animal encounter thrillers like The Grey, Backcountry follows an urban couple who embark on a camping trip in the Canadian backcountry. Alex (Jeff Roop) is a seasoned outdoorsman while Jenn (Missy Peregrym), a corporate lawyer, is not. After getting hopelessly lost in the wilderness, and without food or water, the couple struggles...

Fear and Loathing at Comic Con 2014, Part IV: The Conclusion

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 07:00 PM PDT

CHAPTER 8: LET'S BE TERRORISTSMy head is still throbbing from being drugged the previous night. My asshole is throbbing even more. I can't decide which hurts worse. I think it might be neither. I think it might be the news spreading all over my Facebook wall that Legendary Pictures has announced this morning its plans to develop an original super hero horror film for next summer called Dead Heroes. It's already set to be directed by McG, starring The Rock as an evil murdering superman chasing a young female hoodlum played by America's sweetheart, Jennifer Lawrence.  Eminem and Iggy Azalea have already been tapped to collaborate on an original soundtrack together. So rather than having a blistering and intense Riot Grrl score as I wrote it, the music...

Dream Trip Turns Bad In Vietnamese Horror THE LOST TOUR

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Sure, there are a lot of reasons to suggest that we're beyond the point of viewer fatigue with found footage horror at this point, that people are just plain tired of the format. There's certainly a vocal segment of the population that declares so at every available opportunity. And yet they keep being made, people keep seeing them, and from time to time you come across one that uses the format well and - once again - the format proves rumors of its demise to be greatly exaggerated. This is certainly the case in international markets where enthusiastic audiences are happy to find a local spin on the format.Cue up Vietnamese effort The Lost Tour. Clearly aiming to strike a balance between local and international...

Watch The Trailer For Dark Crime Thriller WASTE LAND

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 03:31 PM PDT

Belgian director Pieter Van Hees is a slippery one. He made his feature debut with The Left Bank, a dark supernaturally charged thriller before moving on to clever action-comedy Dirty Mind. The tonal shift between the films was dramatic - and impressive - and made all the more surprising by the fact that Van Hees insists the two films, as different as they are, are the first two parts of a thematic trilogy that he completes now with Waste Land.An ultra dark crime thriller - think the recent wave of Nordic Noir, but grottier - Van Hees' latest is a selection of both Toronto and Fantastic Fest and while we missed the trailer when it first arrived a few days back we've spotted it now...

A realistic, female focused coming of age story - something we actually don't see very much of coming from anywhere - here's how the festival pitches it:In this inspirational love story, a Delhi university student and aspiring writer afflicted with cerebral palsy (Kalki Koechlin, Dev.D, That Girl in Yellow Boots) leaves India for New York University, where she falls for a fiery young activist. Telluride 2014 Review: ROSEWATER, Jon Stewart's Debut Is Earnest, If Middling

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 02:30 PM PDT

It's safe to say that for the last several decades Jon Stewart has been one of the most powerful voices in comedy. Since taking over The Daily Show, his show has been the beacon for popular American political satire, showing through his witty segments, farcical interviews done by a series of correspondents, or his probing interviews a dialogue about the state of the world that's rarely seen on television. His show helped birthed numerous careers, including both Steven Colbert and John Oliver, both of whom have gone on to host their own shows that have shared DNA with Stewart's comedic proclivities. During the run up to the 2009 Iranian elections, Stewart and his producers sent stalwart correspondent Jason Jones to cover the story from...

BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW Soundtrack Hits Vinyl. Buy It. Play It. Turn It Up.

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 01:30 PM PDT

As those who know me will tell you, when not busy being a movie geek I spend rather a lot of time being a music geek. And from time to time these two interests intersect, which makes Todd a happy boy indeed. And one of those times is today.Panos Cosmatos' Beyond The Black Rainbow is a great favorite in these parts, a psychedelic head trip of a scifi film very much intended to be a complete sensory experience with the auditory part of the experience delivered via an amazing retro-futurist electronic score from Sinoia Caves. I adore this score. Flat out adore it, to the point that I have literally been nagging Cosmatos for years about when it would be available to own. The answer:...

Delectably Dark And Drily Hilarious Trailer For Roy Andersson's A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Confession time: I have never seen a film by Roy Andersson. And clearly this needs to change because if his work is anything at all like the drily hysterical trailer for his Venice and Toronto selection A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence then they were absolutely made for me. Here's how Toronto describes it:A mixture of absurdist, hilariously deadpan humour, shock, and utter horror. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence presents a series of darkly comic vignettes organized around two narrative strands. In one, two hapless novelty salesmen wander around town trying to sell their inventory of vampire fangs and rubber masks, all the while bickering like an old married couple; in the other, Charles XII, Sweden's most bellicose...

Review: BUT ALWAYS Urges Chinese Emigrants To Come Home Or Die

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Nicholas Tse proves he is better-suited to tough guy roles than romantic leads, but his inert performance here opposite Gao Yuanyuan is far from the only problem with Snow Zou's shockingly cliched and unaware tragi-romance.When a film opens in New York City, circa 2001, before jumping back in time to show how its characters got there, it's a safe bet that events are going to end unhappily. Such is the case in Snow Zou Xian's feature debut as writer-director, which clumsily signposts its tragic finale right from its opening moments, as Nicholas Tse's suited Yongyuan strolls towards the World Trade Center after a heartfelt phone call from Gao Yuanyuan's doe-eyed Anran.Cut to 1976, and 4-year-old Anran's mother is killed helping victims of the Tongshan earthquake,...

The Animated Pig Returns! Check Out The Trailer For MCDULL: ME & MY MOM!

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

McDull - the little animated pig who has been a HUGE hit with audiences in his native Hong Kong - is back! And this is a very good thing because while not all of his big screen outings have been as strong as others - experimentation with mixed media and meta narrative have not worked so well - McDull still manages to convey a charm that is rare, indeed, and the trailer for this latest feels more like a throwback to the simplicity of the early (read: best) offerings than anything in more recent days. For the uninitiated, McDull is a young pig in preschool having little preschool adventures. The series has a long history of slipping a bit of social satire into the humor -...

Twitch Film Celebrates 10 Years

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

A decade is an absolute eternity online, a marker that I certainly never thought I'd reach when registering the first domain for Twitch ten years ago now, and yet here we are. Honestly, I never thought much of anything about what Twitch might become when it first started up. Nothing at all. Ask me what the name means. Nothing. Nothing at all. There's no story behind it, no particular reason for it other than that I thought it felt sort of right. Honestly, Twitch mostly exists purely because I'm of a vintage and out of a subculture where after over a decade of writing about independent music for (mostly) self published 'zines before moving online when the internet was in its infancy before moving on...

In all seriousness, this second feature from Giæver (who also stars) looks quite enjoyable from what we've seen.
