The Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, Joins PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES Posted: 18 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT Matt Smith, who rose to fame as the eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who, is joining the cast of Burr Steers' adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He joins a cast already filled with Lily James (Downtown Abby), Sam Riley (Control), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), and Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending). The movie is a horror-comedy spin on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Our heroine, Liz Bennett (James), is pressured by her family to marry into a wealthy upper class home, and chafes at the stiff societal ways of 1800's England. Instead, she feels that she should help defend the countryside against the onslaught of a horrifying zombie plague.Smith will play Mr. Collins, a parson who is on the look-out for... |
Toronto 2014 Review: ST. VINCENT Delivers Vintage Bill Murray Posted: 17 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT Not everybody watches quite as many films as some of us. There are those where getting out to a theatre isn't a weekly (or, in my case, daily) occurrence, where the schlepp of getting there, standing in line, getting a ticket, and spending a few hours in a darkened theatre requires a bit of patience and a lot of conviction. Normally there are event films that draw people in, big spectacles that just can't be replicated at home. Then there are the arty films that are still accessible, not something that's too dour or experimental to seem out of place at the multiplex, but still a film with bite, perhaps something melancholic with a darkly humorous streak to it. St. Vincent is a perfect... |
Watch This Short Now: DAYBREAK, A Stunning, Violent Look At Pre-Teen Life Posted: 17 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT That moment before puberty... it's as if you were falling down a bottomless pit, only you know you're, someday soon, going to hit the bottom. It's out of time, out of mind, of the body, a foreign body. Your body... That, in a nutshell, is Ian Lagarde's short film Daybreak. For those of you who saw Denis Côté's Vic + Flow Saw A Bear, you may recall Lagarde's name as he was the cinematographer of that film. But in addition he's been amassing a nice little body of work as director with Daybreak taking the crown. Premiering at Toronto in 2013, I caught the film at Slamdance last January, where it went on to win their top short film prize. And for good reason. It was... |

A Homecoming Turns Violent In Gritty UK Thriller PLEASURE ISLAND Posted: 17 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT You can never go home again, not really. That's the basic premise of Mike Doxford's UK thriller Pleasure Island, the reality being that either home has changed enough, you have changed enough, or both have in your absence that it's never really the same thing. And in this case the changes lead to violence.Ian Sharp (Band Of Brothers) stars as a man returning home from a stint in the military to discover that his hometown has been overrun by a criminal element. And when an old flame is threatened ... well, things go badly.Besides that lovely poster art to the left we've also got a first look at the trailer for the film. Check it out below.... |

Review: CANTINFLAS, A Romanticized Biopic Posted: 17 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Actor Óscar Jaenada might be Spanish but he was the perfect choice to play the role of Mario Moreno, also known as "Cantinflas," one of Mexico's most beloved and legendary comedians. In Sebastián del Amo's Cantinflas, Jaenada delivers a performance that is pure gold; though the film is far from being a home run in every single aspect. The biopic tackles several facets of Moreno and is structured as two main storylines. We follow rookie producer Mike Todd (played by The Sopranos' Michael Imperioli) in his attempt to bring to life the so-called biggest, most spectacular film ever (that would be 1956's Around the World in Eighty Days); and on the other hand, we have the humble origins of Moreno and the eventual creation and... |
Destroy All Monsters: The Last TIFF Posted: 17 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT My time as an attendee of the Toronto International Film Festival has nicely overlapped the transition from Festival Then to Festival Now, which I'd argue has taken place over just about exactly the last fifteen years, the same period for which I've been a regular festival-goer. Oh sure, I got press-ganged into a couple of rush screenings of flicks from Israel and Vietnam that I can't clearly recall at the 1996 festival, at the behest of a couple of York University film professors who probably hadn't completed their lesson plans and just wanted the students to fuck off for a few more weeks in September so they could catch up. But for the most part, I started attending TIFF in 1999, starting with Midnight Madness... |
