Halloween Comes Late to France at the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival

My biggest complaint about living in Paris has nothing to do with the usual stereotypes of rude French people, endless bureaucracies or overpriced food, but rather that the city's overall appreciation of Halloween and all things fantastic pales in comparison to that of the U.S. Thankfully, two weeks after the fact, France will get a healthy dose of horror and the supernatural at the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival. The festival has just unleashed its stellar lineup, which features a handpicked selection of the best horror films making the rounds at festivals this year, including many which haven't yet screened in Paris, including (finally!) V/H/S and John Dies at the End. They've also got a stellar repertory program, including a chance to see classics like...

THE LAST STAND TRAILER Shows More Action, But Arnold Is Still The Sheriff

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:29 PM PST

The second trailer for Kim Jee-woon's The Last Stand is longer than the first one, allowing more time to establish action-filled nighttime scenes before Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his first appearance as a small-time sheriff. It's a wise choice, giving the impression that the film, featuring Schwarzenegger's first starring role in almost 10 years, will be doing more than simply making jokes about the Austrian's advancing years. It also showcases more of the expansive, jacked-up vibe that director Kim created for The Good, The Bad, The Weird, and that's (potentially) a very good thing indeed. The Last Stand also stars Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander, Luis Guzmán, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford, and Genesis Rodriguez. The film is due for a wide...

Blu-ray Review: DINOTASIA Does The Impossible, It Wastes Werner Herzog

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 06:35 PM PST

About five minutes into David Krentz & Erik Nelson's CG animated feature, Dinotasia, the thought occurred to me that this film didn't look any better than any number of Discovery Channel TV programs. Suffice it to say, I was not surprised to learn Dinotasia does, in fact, find its origins in a Discovery Channel series titled Dinosaur Revolution. That being said, I'm a fan of those programs. My son and I watch shows like Clash of the Dinosaurs, Walking with Beasts, and Monsters Resurrected all the time. However, this film was marketed as a stand alone feature, and I feel as though that is a bit of a sketchy description. The ideas behind Dinotasia are certainly interesting. The filmmakers wanted to create short vignettes following one or two...

Fresh Look At Charlie Sheen In Roman Coppola's A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE MIND OF CHARLES SWAN III

The other other filmmaking Coppola returns to the big screen for the first time since 2001 effort CQ when A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III premieres at the Rome International Film Festival. Roman Coppola has kept himself busy in the meanwhile writing scripts with Wes Anderson, shooting second unit for his father and sister and directing stacks of music videos but his return to features is a welcome and anticipated one.Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Katheryn Winnick, Patricia Arquette, Aubrey Plaza, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead star in what promises to be a very odd look into the life of the titular Swan.Charles Swan III (Charlie Sheen) has it all. He's an eccentric and highly successful graphic designer whose fame, money and...

Promising Trailer For Latvian Crime Drama PEOPLE OUT THERE

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 01:15 PM PST

Though the region will likely never produce films on the scale of other parts of Europe the volume and quality of pictures coming out of the Baltic States is clearly on the rise, with an increasing number of films screening to strong response around the globe. And Alk Karapetian's People Out There looks to be the sort that could do the same.Jan, a guy in his twenties, and his friend Cracker are involved in several crimes in their neglected suburb of the city. After meeting the "golden youth" beauty Sabina, he looks for a fresh start in downtown circles, but only finds contempt. His hopes for love, compassion and opportunity are dashed by the even more ruthless rules of the bourgeois, and he comes to...

First Shot From Ben Wheatley's A FIELD IN ENGLAND Features Exactly That

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 12:48 PM PST

Ah, Ben Wheatley, how we've come to love thee. The director of Down Terrace, Kill List and Sightseers has quickly cobbled together one of the most unique and compelling filmographies of recent days and he's back out there doing his thing with the upcoming A Field In England. A period piece this time, the backers at Film4 describe it like this:An English Civil War-set film that stars Michael Smiley (Kill List), Peter Ferdinando (Tony), Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen), Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh), Richard Glover (Sightseers) and Ryan Pope (Ideal). A Field In England follows a small group of deserters fleeing from a raging battle through an overgrown field.  As they are captured by O'Neil, an alchemist, they are forced to aid him in...

The KAMASUTRA Goes 3D With Sherlyn Chopra

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 12:30 PM PST

You can thank - or blame - the massive international success of Sex And Zen 3D for this one: Director Rupesh Paul has launched production on English language erotic drama Kamasutra 3D with Sherlyn Chopra in the lead. It's a project Paul openly acknowledges will likely never be released in India due to local censorship but his backers are counting on international sales to turn a profit in the endeavor. How explicit could it possibly get with a local cast? Well, Chopra is already notorious as the first Indian to pose nude on the cover of Playboy so it's not like she's worried about protecting a family friendly veneer. As with Sex And Zen 3D, Kamasutra is being shot is proper stereoscopic 3D which begs...

Images Of The Apocalypse From Cuba's LOS DESASTRES DE LA GUERRA

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 11:45 AM PST

The words 'Cuba' and 'science fiction' are, admittedly, not ones that seem like the most obvious of friends. Throw a bit of 'Kurosawa-inspired'and it seems even more unlikely. And yet that is exactly what we have in Tomas Piard's latest effort Los Desastres De La Guerra. While plot specifics are difficult to come by the picture is clearly a post apocalyptic work, one which Piard describes as influenced by Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, though Goya's famous painting is an obvious touchstone as well.Though there does not appear to be a trailer online - if anyone out there knows otherwise, please let me know - we do have a gallery of stills below....

Gemma Arterton And Benedict Cumberbatch Joining The Pythons (Monty) For ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 10:30 AM PST

Monty Python just got more attractive with the signing of Gemma Arterton to upcoming feature Absolutely Anything with Benedict Cumberbatch also in talks to join. While not an official Python picture, Absolutely Anything has been developed by founding member Terry Jones who will also direct and features all of the living members other than Eric Idle - who was also strangely absent from recent Graham Chapman bio-pic A Liar's Autobiography - doing voice work.Story? You bet. The Pythons will voice aliens who decide to give a normal teacher - the part Cumberbatch is up for and which John Oliver was previously attached to - the power to do absolutely anything just to see how badly he'll cock it up. Among the results are a talking...

Check Out A Fantastic Trailer For Indie Western THEY DIE BY DAWN

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST

Keep your eyes open for Jeymes Samuels' half hour western short They Die By Dawn. Because not only has Samuels assembled a stellar cast - Michael K Williams, Isaiah Washington, Nate Parker, Jesse Williams, Erykah Badu, Rosario Dawson, Giancarlo Esposito - but he clearly knows what to do with them. Production design and performances look uniformly excellent and I can't wait to see the whole thing. Check the trailer below....

Hey, Toronto! Sharpen Up Your Razor Gloves, Twitch Presents A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET On The Big Screen Saturday!

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST

Hey, Toronto! All your favorite slasher villains are coming to the big screen, projected on glorious 35mm, as part of the Twitch presented Birth Of A Villain series at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Kicking things off this week, it's Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street. The one-two punch of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and John Carpenter's megahit Halloween in the 1970s put a new face to American horror movies. While previously the genre had its share of tortured, sympathetic anti-heroes (the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man), this new breed of monster was a hero because of his villainy -- and the more gleefully he set about his gruesome work, the better. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky,...

What's Next For Director Of IRON SKY? It Could Look Like This ...

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST

What's next for Iron Sky director Timo Vuorensola? Word came out back in May that he was working on an adaptation of time traveling graphic novel I Killed Adolf Hitler but when we crossed paths at the American Film Market Vuorensola shared that while work on the Hitler script continues - and is looking good - he's also got a second as yet untitled, project on the bubble. And that up above? That's the first piece of concept art to hit the public eye. Looking good ......

Blu-ray Review: GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (Sentai Filmworks) Transcends Its Methods, Becomes Its Own History

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 06:30 AM PST

On November 20th, Sentai Filmworks brings Isao Takahata's masterpiece, Grave of the Fireflies to Blu-ray for the first time in the US. The film was previously released in Japan to great acclaim among fans of HD anime, and this release actually marks the first vintage Ghibli production to appear on US shores before its UK counterpart, largely due to the fact that Fireflies is one of the only Ghibli titles not owned by the Disney company. Fortunately, this disc, sporting a svelte $17 price tag these days on Amazon, compares extremely favorably with the Japanese import disc which hovers around $65 right now. If that's not reason enough to purchase this version instead of the Japanese disc, read on...Our own Niels Matthijs took a detailed...
