Review: THE LOOK OF LOVE Is Pure Period Panache

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST

Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom are an incendiary pair. From 24 Hour Party People to Tristram Shandy, the actor-director duo produce a potent synergy that is hard to pin down. Given the cult success of these earlier two films, it is surprising how conventional The Look of Love is by comparison. This is by no means detrimental to this incredibly lavish and emotionally bruising production, an effortless period piece that recounts the true story of Britain's richest man. Spanning decades it recounts his personal demons and familial woes that never seem to undermine his intrepid ambition.Paul Raymond's (Coogan) notorious journey to success began in 1958, when he opened a groundbreaking gentlemen's nightclub - the cornerstone of Raymond's Soho empire which included a men's magazine, nude...

Review: A GUN IN EACH HAND Invites Puns, Delivers Wit

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

A Gun In Each Hand is a smash-hit success; a multi-award winner boasting a huge all-star cast, it is an extremely commercial production that broke box-office records in its native Spain. It opened the Spanish Film Festival in Australia this year and has just been recently released on DVD. A witty and scathingly hilarious portrait of forty-something manhood in contemporary Barcelona, the film follows chance encounters between old friends, acquaintances, ex-spouses and potential lovers to form an engrossing series of six intertwined tales of love. It is not a film about guns, it is a film about 'guns' - the wry metaphorical type - as the film cunningly reveals. Wry is the term that is most often used when referring to this film, and it...

Blu-ray Review: COWBOY BEBOP Remastered Sessions Is A Mandatory Masterpiece

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 09:30 PM PST

Cowboy Bebop is now available as a sublimely remastered Blu-ray collection. Stop what you are doing and buy it now. Perhaps some reading this may enquire as to what Cowboy Bebop is and hesitate on such a purchase, hopefully this review will change their tune. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop; these are anime titles considered by many fans to be the greatest of all time. Standing the test of time, these innovative masterworks are still resonating today as passionate and provoking narratives. Cowboy Bebop, which invented the concept of space cowboys (take that Firefly!) follows the misadventures of Spike and his wonderfully flawed and greedy crew on crazy bounties throughout space. At the heart of these wild adventures is a dark past Spike contends...

Lisbon & Estoril 2013 Review: PELO MALO Goes For Sweet And Harsh And Succeeds

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:45 PM PST

The main attraction at this year's San Sebastián, where it took home the top award, Mariana Rondón's Pelo Malo smartly draws from Italian neorealism to create an intimate, sparely successful depiction of hardship during childhood and sexual identity. Its first and foremost achievement is the fact it manages to do both, blending innocence and harsh characterization in a sweet, poignant tale of a nine-year-old boy with curly, "bad" hair who wants to look like a straight-haired singer for his upcoming school photo. This tiny problem in the boy's life, of course, serves as a basis for what Rodón is really trying to glimpse into: how homosexuality starts to manifest itself, the confusion and rejection that it entails in any poverty-stricken, ignorant society (and not just...

A Selection Of The Greatest Non-Python Python.

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST

With word arriving today that the surviving members of legendary comedy troupe Monty Python are getting back together for a new stage show it seems a good time to take a look at some of the more neglected corners of the Monty Python universe. And so here we have a selection of some of my very favorite bits of non-Python projects featuring the various members in different combinations. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that anybody reading this is already well familiar with Fawlty Towers, Brazil, etc so I'm leaving those better known titles out - and if you haven't seen either of those, in particular, then run don't walk - as well as the wealth of pre-Python that is...

Now on DVD: THE TWILIGHT ZONE The Complete Series (Episodes Only)

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 06:01 AM PST

I find myself, now and again, looking back at old syndicated shows and wondering why I was ever not a fan of them. During my formative years, Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone was already in syndication and I cannot recall why I did not latch onto it during those times. Perhaps I was too young, already committed to the mass consumerist titles like G.I. Joe and Transformers. Shows like The Twilight Zone often signaled the end of the after-school cartoon run. Had I given Serling's show more of chance in those days I might have become weirder, sooner, delving into those dark and twisted tales at an earlier age. But now that I have been given the full box set to make my way through, I...

Monty Python Reuniting For New Stage Show!

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 05:20 AM PST

Details are still scarce, with the official press conference not scheduled until Thursday, but the surviving members of legendary comedy troupe Monty Python are confirming that they are reuniting for a new stage show. New material? Old material? A blend of the two? Nobody is saying yet but given that this is the first time that John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam will have performed together since a one off appearance at the Aspen Comedy Festival in 1998 - where they were joined on stage by the ashes of Graham Chapman in an urn - this is a very big deal.Says Jones: We're getting together and putting on a show -- it's real. I'm quite excited about it. I hope...
