HK Filmart 2013: Top HAF Prizes Doled Out To DOOMSDAY - PARTY And BARBER'S TALES

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 03:00 AM PDT

The Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum wrapped up on Wednesday and handed out its awards. The major prizes were picked up by Ho Hong and Jun Robles Lana. 25 projects took part, whittled down from 250 submissions, and the two big prizes (worth $19,230/HK$150,000) were destined for a Hong Kong film (of which there were five) and one of the remaining broader Asian hopefuls. This year's HK prize went to debut helmer Ho Hong's Doomsday - Party while the Filipino project Barber's Tales from Jun Robles Lana took home the other top prize. Both projects were also handed ARRI prizes, which entitles them to €30,000 worth of rental equipment from the camera manufacturer. In addition, Barber's Tales took home the Technicolor Asia Award worth $25,000...

HELLFJORD Gets US Remake at Showtime

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 12:53 AM PDT

Well, this is exciting news. Deadline is reporting that Norwegian writer/director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is re-teaming with producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell for an English-language version of the superb TV comedy series Hellfjord for Showtime. While I seem to have been one of the only critics who liked Wirkola's anarchic Brothers Grimm update, it has just crossed US$200 million at the global box office, and off the back of news that a sequel has been greenlit, it seems Wirkola is on a roll.Hellfjord is the story of a disgraced Oslo police detective who is banished to the remote climes of Northern Norway after accidentally killing his own horse. The bizarre small town of Hellfjord boasts an oddball population all aged...

TV Review: COMMUNITY S4E07, Economics Of Marine Biology (Or, It's Starting To Feel Like Home Again)

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 11:00 PM PDT

No doubt I've been extra wary towards Community this season what with new showrunners David Guarascio, Moses Port and their (largely new stock of) writers taking over for the old hands that have moved on. I've sometimes been very critical of a show that while never perfect, felt ever more clunky and uneven in its quest to keep the formula that creator Dan Harmon and co. kept so lively for three seasons.A few episodes back with Jeff finally meeting his estranged father things started to fall into place with Joel McHale delivering an incredibly rich and rewarding performance, building Jeff's humanity in all its many shades to something so poignantly bitter and broken, yet strong. Last week Greendale rallied behind supporting Chang in his imaginary...

Review: ADMISSION Allows Entry to An Agreeable, If Shallow, Experience

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 10:01 PM PDT

The latest film from director Paul Weitz sits comfortably alongside his earlier comic and ultimately melodramatic explorations of 30-something adult anxieties about parenthood, mid-career crises, and personal growth. As he himself grows older, though, Weitz's indulgence in soapy sentimentality is increasing. Weitz does not receive credit for the screenplay -- that goes entirely to Karen Croner, based on a 2009 novel by Jean Hanff Korelitz -- but it's easy to imagine why the material appealed to him. Portia Nathan (Tina Fey), like the central characters in About a Boy (2002) and In Good Company (2004), is settled into a comfortable routine that is about to be shaken to its core. In her professional life, Portia has risen to a high position within the admissions office...

PATLABOR Live-Action... Something... Is About To Be Made

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 06:30 PM PDT

Is it a film? Is it a series? Whatever it is, it's a new adaptation in the Patlabor franchise, it's going to be live-action, and it's coming in 2014. To say that "not much is known" is an understatement: all that we have is one picture from production company Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, presented earlier today at the Tokyo International Anime Fair. Patlabor is an anime franchise which started in the 1980s, and has so far included an OVA series of seven episodes, three movies, and a long-running popular television series. The franchise concerns the adventures of a police squad in the near future, specialized in "labor" crime. "Labors" are big robot-suits which are generally used for construction work, but can wreak immense havoc when used...

Dave Boyle Will Find The MAN FROM RENO

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Dave Boyle is about to get dark. The American indie director has long been of interest here at Twitch, his quirky fare revolving around the culture clashes of Asian Americans and showcasing Boyle's love for Japanese culture. From Big Dreams Little Tokyo to White On Rice and Surrogate Valentine, Boyle's particular vision has been developing and sharpening up. Which makes the news of his latest quite surprising. Yes, the cross cultural element remains intact but it would appear that the humor is being traded in for dark thriller elements. In a small town south of San Francisco, Sheriff Paul Del Moral is driving home through the fog one night when he accidentally strikes a pedestrian, a lone Japanese man. However, before an investigation can take place...
