Review: Miyazaki's THE WIND RISES (KAZE TACHINU), A Stunning, Somber Work

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Anticipation levels are always high with the release of a new Studio Ghibili movie, and even higher when the director and writer is the father of the company and man behind its best works, Miyazaki Hayao. While Miyazaki's previous two works, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo contained fantastical elements and were based on story's for children, The Wind Rises (aka Kaze Tachinu) is a fictionalized biography of engineer Horikoshi Jiro, who designed the Zero fighter aircraft, which was devastatingly effective in the early days of World War Two. As a result of its 1920's/30's real world setting and overtones of the coming war it is stylistically reminiscent of Takahata Isao's Grave of the Fireflies, though it's not quite as harrowing as that masterpiece. The film...

AVENGERS Sequel And Villain Announced! It Is The AGE OF ULTRON!

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Not to be outdone by the Saturday morning announcement of the Batman and Superman join-up in Man of Steel 2 Marvel Studios finished off their panel last night with an announcement from writer-director Joss Whedon. The second Avengers film, due out Summer of 2015, will be called Avengers Age of Ultron! As I have come to understand it, this is a recent story arc over 10 issues, and the Marvel Universe has been destroyed by one of the Avengers' nemeses Ultron. Ultron is an artificial intelligence created in a robotic body by Henry Pym (Ant-Man) for the greater good. But as A.I's are inclined to do, it sets out to destroy humanity. Oh, who will save us? Apparently Wolverine gets sent back in time to kill Pym...

Batman And Superman Together in MAN OF STEEL 2!

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 11:30 PM PDT

What began as -- of course -- a run of the rumor mill leading up to today's Man of Steel panel at Comic-Con today was confirmed by director Zack Snyder. After numerous run ins in the comic book universes they inhabited, Superman and Batman will finally meet on the silver screen in Man of Steel 2 in 2015. Director Zack Snyder officially announced that Batman will indeed appear in his follow-up to "Man of Steel." He said in a statement, "I'm so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can't wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter.  Let's face it, it's beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are...

Review: ANOHANA Is A Beautiful And Bittersweet Anime Series

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT

After watching just 20 minutes of the anime series Anohana, I knew that it was a show that I would like because of its wonderful characters, plots and visuals. However, I decided to hold off judgment until I had finished watching all of the show. And by the time I had watched it in its entirety, I realized I had experienced something really quite special - an intelligent animated series dealing with serious themes in a way that is both mature and meaningful. But first a word of warning: don't be deceived by Anohana's gentle opening, cute character designs and colorful backgrounds - it is very much a tearjerker. The coming of age tale centers around the death of a member of a group of childhood...

Fantasia 2013 Review: BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN, A Gloriously Devastating Bluegrass Masterpiece

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

"You'll rue the day that you were born. For givin' me the devil cause I wouldn't hoe corn."This is the stuff of old country music, the purest of joy taken, perhaps from mistakes made, perhaps just fate teasing and cruelly taking away. I have not been this emotionally affected by a film since Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark, but where that film is angry, manipulative, and often recklessly dishonest in its melodrama (which I also love) for the purpose of provocation, Felix Van Groeningen's Broken Circle Breakdown is earnest, warm, and utterly human - but no less calculated. In terms of an emotional endurance test, this is as powerful as anything I have seen, and yet it is an earnest, completely accessible slice of...

NYAFF 2013 Interview: Andrew Lau On The State Of HK Cinema Today

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Andrew Lau is a name that is very much known and beloved in these here parts. Last month the legendary Hong Kong director was in New York for the New York Asian Film Festival to introduce a small slate of his films, including Young And Dangerous 1 & 2, and The Last Tycoon. He was not scheduled to do any press. Our own intrepid Diva Velez (her favorite HK flick is Lau's classic Infernal Affairs) got the shock of her day when Lau said he'd give her five minutes. So while the following is short, it is oh so very sweet. [ed. Ben Umstead] Twitch: You're synonymous with Hong Kong film, but we're going through a very transitional time when we don't see films like...

Review: THE WORLD'S END Kicks Ass With Middle-Aged Insight (And Beer)

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Gary King (Simon Pegg) is that guy everybody knows from high school. The cautionary tale. The guy who peaked too early and who now has to come to grips with the fact that his life will never again be as good as it was when he was sixteen, that he's already well into the downhill slide and there's nothing at all that he can do to stop it. And so Gary does what all Gary's do. He gets drunk and pretends that nothing has changed, that he effectively is still 16 and life is still awesome. And in this particular Gary's case, he's taking some friends along for the ride, reconstructing the greatest night of their lives, the night five high school chums tackled a...

SDCC 2013: THE WORLD'S END Lights Up Hall H

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

One of the most anticipated Hall H panels at this year's Comic-Con was for The World's End. Over the years, few filmmakers have earned such admiration and adoration by Comic-Con attendees as Edgar Wright. Fans camped overnight underneath large tents outside the San Diego Convention Center, braving the brisk marina winds and wet grass just to catch an early glimpse of Wright's latest film. And, even for those who regretted getting in line as "late" as 3:30am (for a 9:30am panel), the energy in the room for the panel's one hour duration signified one thing, and one thing only: pure elation. Here are some of the highlights:...

THE LONE RANGER: Tonto Meets Pronto!

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

The Lone Ranger continues to roll out around the world. It opened in Spain and Taiwan this weekend, and will open in Japan, France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK in the coming weeks. The film's principals have been working hard to promote the movie, but we think it's fair to say they never met an interviewer like Pronto before. Pronto -- Tonto's cousin -- sits down to talk with actors Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, and Ruth Wilson, as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski. They treat their interviewer (our friend, actor and comedian Daniele Rizzo, in full makeup and costume) with various levels of respect and/or bemusement. Watching Pronto's interviews actually left me with a more favorable impression than sitting...

Japan Cuts 2013 Review: I HAVE TO BUY NEW SHOES, An Irresistibly Seductive, Bittersweet Romantic Comedy

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

A romantic movie set in the city of Paris may come across as, and may indeed be, the ultimate cinematic cliché, but writer-director Kitagawa Eriko and producer-cinematographer Iwai Shunji unerringly make it work in I Have to Buy New Shoes, an incredibly seductive and charming film that beautifully honors romance in all its dimensions. Please, I beg you, don't let the title, which makes it sound like some brain-dead chick flick, put you off. It absolutely makes sense in the context of the film, but it unfortunately lends a false first impression. This is anything but brainless: it is a funny, poignant, bittersweet movie with wonderful performances that sweeps you up in its embrace and never lets go, right through to its melancholy yet hopeful conclusion.I...

Guanajuato 2013: Director Ryan Coogler And Star Melonie Diaz Walk The Red Carpet, Talk FRUITVALE STATION

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Fruitvale Station was a really powerful way to start the Guanajuato International Film Festival 2013. It's a great and difficult drama that puts us in the Bay Area, with the real-life story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old African American who was shot by a police officer at a BART station. Personally, I didn't know this tragic story, so the film was, in every possible way, a worthy experience. Here's an extract of Sean Smithson's review for Twitch: "Anyone who has ever been poor, and lived in an area where you can make your way doing some shady shit, is going to know exactly where Oscar's head is at here. Anyone who hasn't? Director (Ryan) Coogler and his lead will indeed take you there." Ryan Coogler...
