SXSW 2013 Review: CHEAP THRILLS Fiendishly Recalculates the Value of Money

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 02:00 AM PST

Class warfare comes perversely home in Cheap Thrills, a fiendish, fierce, and funny morality tale about the true value of money. It's absolutely convincing, even though it shouldn't be. The film explores the tangled relationship between the idle rich and the working poor, giving fresh answers to age-old questions: How far are you willing to go to provide for your family? What is the dollar value of pride and/or humiliation? How do you assess your own personal worth? And how much money would you pay to get revenge on the neighbor's dog that keeps defecating in your backyard? Craig (Pat Healy) is introduced as a loving family man, with a supportive wife (Amanda Fuller) and 15-month-old son. But they're facing eviction if Craig can't come...

SXSW 2013 Review: UNHUNG HERO Takes A Tiny Prick On A Global Trip

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 11:50 PM PST

The premise of this Brain Spitz's new documentary, Unhung Hero, is enough to make any man cringe. When Patrick Moote proposes to his girlfriend at a basketball game and is very publicly rejected, the video of the event goes viral. However, even though having his shame shared with millions around the globe might seem devastating enough, it is the reason his ex gave that spurred on this film. Apparently, Patrick Moote's penis was just too damned small for her, and that was enough reason for her to end the relationship. This kick in his undersized crotch was enough to send Moote on a worldwide search for a solution to his problem, and along the way he finds more than a solution, he finds solace.Even though...

SXSW 2013 First Impression: THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE Brings Big Laughs in Spurts

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:28 PM PST

The SXSW Film Festival kicked things off today with the world premiere of Don Scardino's The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Olvia Wilde, James Gandolfini, and Alan Arkin. The film is about a magical friendship between two successful entertainers (Carrell and Buscemi) whose act gets canned when a new magician (Carrey) proves their shtick too old fashioned. Shtick is an apt term as every actor in the film has the character meter turned up to eleven. This is a wacky film that totally commits to some pretty bizarre jokes, many of which are very funny. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of filler. The movie is studio all the way and sticks to a pretty standard narrative. That means we...

Take A Gander At The UK Trailer For Winterbottom's THE LOOK OF LOVE

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PST

We do love us some Steve Coogan 'round these parts. And when he teams up with director Michael Winterbottom... well we're all the better for it. Past evidence on that front being the deranged 24 Hour Party People and the hilariously melancholic The Trip. Their latest collaboration The Look Of Love is a biopic about British businessman Paul Raymond who built an erotic empire within a culturally uptight one. Coogan stars as our intrepid fellow, owner of the notoriously naughty Raymond Revue Bar and Men Only Magazine. The film charts his rise to fame and controversy, with the UK trailer highlighting family strife, namely the unusual relationship with his daughter played Imogen Poots. While said trailer isn't anything to scream about it's always a pleasure...

Review: DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' Traces Remarkable Journey

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 10:00 AM PST

The story is so remarkable you almost can't help but being skeptical that it wasn't crafted just to be the basis of a film some day -- massive international touring band loses their second main lead singer, and needs to find a guy to fill some pretty massive footsteps. Then, tooling around Youtube, one of the band members finds a guy in the Philippines who does a drop-dead imitation of their original hits. Cut to a few months later. This unknown is playing for tens of thousands, and the band is reaping tens of millions dollars, and, in short order, playing some of the largest gigs of their careers.Sure, that's the precis, but Don't Stop Believin' - Everyman's Journey is much more than the remarkable...

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PST

It is rare that I wish I lived in Los Angeles, but this year's Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles is making a good case for the city of angels. A few days ago we announced the opening and closing night features of IFFLA, and now we have the whole schedule to share. And It is damned impressive. In addition to Gangs of Wasseypur and Midnight's Children, the IFFLA has rounded up some of the biggest critical and commercial hits of India's fantastic 2012, as well as a trio of classic films that I wish I could see on the big screen. The highlights for me are Ashim Ahluwalia's Miss Lovely, Vasan Bala's Peddlers (which I hope to finally be able to see and review), and...

International Teaser For Banjong's PEE MAK

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:30 AM PST

Intrigued by the Thai trailers for the latest from Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter, Alone, Phobia, Phobia 2)but wish you could understand what the hell the were saying? Wish granted. The international teaser for the film has been released, English subtitles included. This one plays things largely straight, the only indication of the comedy element coming right at the end. You want an extended synopsis to chew on as well? You got it:During the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, many Thai men were drafted to serve in the war. "Pee Mak" or "Mak" (Mario Maurer) was no exception and had to leave his pregnant wife to join the fight. While at war, he met, saved, and formed a close bond with four fellow soldiers: "Ter" (Freud-Nattapong Chartpong),...
