Class warfare comes perversely home in Cheap Thrills, a fiendish, fierce, and funny morality tale about the true value of money. It's absolutely convincing, even though it shouldn't be. The film explores the tangled relationship between the idle rich and the working poor, giving fresh answers to age-old questions: How far are you willing to go to provide for your family? What is the dollar value of pride and/or humiliation? How do you assess your own personal worth? The premise of this Brain Spitz's new documentary, Unhung Hero, is enough to make any man cringe. When Patrick Moote proposes to his girlfriend at a basketball game and is very publicly rejected, the video of the event goes viral. However, even though having his shame shared with millions around the globe might seem devastating enough, it is the reason his ex gave that spurred on this film. Apparently, Patrick Moote's penis was just too damned small for her, and that was enough reason for her to end the relationship. The SXSW Film Festival kicked things off today with the world premiere of Don Scardino's The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Olvia Wilde, James Gandolfini, and Alan Arkin. The film is about a magical friendship between two successful entertainers (Carrell and Buscemi) whose act gets canned when a new magician (Carrey) proves their shtick too old fashioned. Shtick is an apt term as every actor in the film has the character meter turned up to eleven. This is a wacky film that totally commits to some pretty bizarre jokes, many of which are very funny. We do love us some Steve Coogan 'round these parts. And when he teams up with director Michael Winterbottom... well we're all the better for it. Past evidence on that front being the deranged 24 Hour Party People and the hilariously melancholic The Trip. Their latest collaboration The Look Of Love is a biopic about British businessman Paul Raymond who built an erotic empire within a culturally uptight one. Coogan stars as our intrepid fellow, owner of the notoriously naughty Raymond Revue Bar and Men Only Magazine. It is rare that I wish I lived in Los Angeles, but this year's Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles is making a good case for the city of angels. A few days ago we announced the opening and closing night features of IFFLA, and now we have the whole schedule to share. Intrigued by the Thai trailers for the latest from Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter, Alone, Phobia, Phobia 2)but wish you could understand what the hell the were saying? Wish granted.
