Jimmy McGovern Creating BBC2 Series on First Australian Convicts Posted: 10 Apr 2013 01:01 AM PDT Almost as soon as it was established as a British outpost, Australia became a giant prison for all manner of serious and petty criminals. This has provided lots of fodder for Australian storytellers over the years, most recently seen in Twitch favourite Van Diemen's Land (pictured). Now the gaolers and wardens feel it's time to face up to their bizarre social experiment, or at least make a popular TV series about it. So they will, with BBC2 announcing that BAFTA-winning screenwriter Jimmy McGovern is writing an 8-part drama about the first convicts transported from Britain to Australia in 1787. According to The Guardian:McGovern said: "In 1787 Britain banished its petty thieves, whores, orphans and highwaymen to Sydney Cove - a place so hot and barren and hostile that very... |

Watch The First Trailer For Neill Blomkamp's ELYSIUM Posted: 09 Apr 2013 05:30 PM PDT The expectations placed on Neill Blomkamp's Elysium are staggering. On the back of his debut feature, District 9, Blomkamp has been widely hailed not only as a visionary but something far more difficult: A director who can mesh mass entertainment with social conscience. A new Spielberg aiming to challenge and educate as he entertains. So, yeah, no pressure there at all. The thing is, though, he was up to it with District 9 - a film that stands up to all the praise heaped on it - and early signs are that he'll deliver again with his sophomore effort, Elysium. Cue the first trailer. In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium,... |

Review: OBLIVION Looks Great, Sounds Like a Dozen Better Sci-Fi Flicks Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT Tom Cruise returns to the realms of science fiction, conspiring with Tron: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski in a big screen adaptation of the director's unpublished graphic novel. While visually spectacular and action-packed, Oblivion compromises its technical accomplishments with a sloppily executed script that borrows liberally from many beloved genre classics. In 2077, 60 years after an alien invasion triggered a nuclear war that decimated the planet, the human race has all but abandoned Earth for Titan, the largest of Saturn's moons. Commander Jack Harper (Cruise) is the last remaining man on the planet, charged with monitoring and servicing drones, which guard huge hydroelectric generators that convert Earth's oceans into usable fuel on Titan. Together with his partner, Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) they form an effective team, dutifully fending... |
Brussels 2013: TRAP FOR CINDERELLA Is A Sexy Throwback To Suspense Films Of Yesteryear Posted: 09 Apr 2013 10:00 AM PDT Iain Softley's Trap For Cinderella harks back to elegant, suspenseful mysteries like Vertigo and Diabolique. In the shadow of those films, it's not particularly groundbreaking, but it's so stylish, intriguing and well-made that innovation hardly seems necessary. After all, the old adage warns us not to fix things that aren't broken, and Softley complies admirably. Were it not for a couple scenes involving cell phones, some pop songs, and the film's fairly copious amount of nudity, it'd be easy to mistake the movie for a lost, sleeper gem from the 60's. Alex Barber's excellent, desaturated 35 mm photography only adds to the retro feel. It's a deft, remarkably assured work, and certainly not the type of film I expected from the director of K-Pax. ... |

Grist For The Rumor Mill: Shimizu Takashi To Direct Live Action KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE? Posted: 09 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT Before saying this out loud allow me to first point out that, at this point, the following is best considered a rumor and we have not been able to confirm it to the level we normally strive for. That said, the source is pretty compelling and the story itself is just so damn odd and unexpected that I can't imagine someone making it up if there wasn't something to it. And so ...Twitch has been told that Ju-On and The Grudge director Shimizu Takashi - more or less the last man standing in the J-horror wave - has come on board to direct a big budget, live action adaptation of Studio Ghibli's popular children's fantasy animation Kiki's Delivery Service. Shimizu certainly knows a thing or... |
First MAN OF STEEL TV Spot Lands Posted: 09 Apr 2013 06:59 AM PDT If there was any ambiguity what the moral-psychological wrestle that Kal-El aka Clark Kent aka Superman goes through in Man Of Steel would be, that is now dashed with the first TV spot for the film, which basically gives away the whole story arc in one line of dialogue - presumably delivered right near the end to his key romantic interest before he makes his Big Decision. If spoilers don't bother you, check out the TV spot below. Of course I could be totally wrong, but everything I've seen until now - and everything they've kept hidden - says no.... |
