First Look at Harrison Ford Sci-Fi Flick ENDER'S GAME

Posted: 03 May 2013 01:00 AM PDT

The first footage has arrived online for Gavin Hood's upcoming science-fiction thriller, Ender's Game. Based on the popular novel by Orson Scott Card, it tells the story of a gifted young lad who is recruited into a hi-tech military academy in deep space to prepare for an upcoming alien war. Asa Butterfield, who many will recognise as the star of Martin Scorsese's Hugo, stars, alongside such notable veterans as Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley. Now, I've not read the book, so I'm not coming to this project with any misty-eyed nostalgia for this universe or these characters. Butterfield did good work in Hugo, but is now hitting puberty, which has proved an insurmountable stumbling block for a number of child actors in the past. Kingsley...

Review: HANNIBAL S1E06 Finally! That's The Hannibal We Know!

Posted: 03 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

An inmate at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Dr. Abel Gideon (played by Eddie Izzard) is rushed from his cell, strapped to a gurney, for medical treatment. He frees himself and brutally- pardon me- 'B'rutally murders the nurse left alone to care for him. The method in which he murdered her points towards a killer called the Chesapeake Ripper, whom Jack Crawford believes to still be free. Dr. Gideon is taking credit for the murders. Coincidentally, the start of his incarceration coincides with the end of the murders. Until now it would appear. This is really the only time which Graham is utilized in the episode as he does that thing he does and envisions how Gideon murdered the nurse. It is...

Jessica Chastain To Join Hathaway And McConaughey In Nolan's INTERSTELLER?

Posted: 02 May 2013 10:15 PM PDT

The Zero Dark Thirty star is reportedly in talks to take the final lead spot in Christopher Nolan's next film Interstellar alongside Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey. The Oscar nominated actress has been in high demand and has a number of projects on the go. I hope she is ready for some heady, heavy like gravity, sci-fi as Nolan's film should be about a group of explorers traveling through worm holes. I say should be because Christopher has never been one to willingly share details about any of his projects. But as you recall when we first got wind of this project we knew that his brother Jonathan's script is based on a treatment about traveling through wormholes by astrophysicist Kip Thorne. And those kind of...

Review: COMMUNITY S4E12, Heroic Origins (Or, Hey, Here's An Idea: Let's Insult The Entire Fanbase And History Of The Show)

Posted: 02 May 2013 08:30 PM PDT

So here we are, the penultimate episode of the season, and what may be the penultimate episode of the series -- though NBC has renewed a slew of their hour-long shows, they've yet to comment on the status of their half-hour comedies. So if this is, indeed, one of the last Community's ever I am both relieved and frustrated that Dan Harmon had nothing to do with it. In the Harmon years, this episode wouldn't have gotten past the idea phase in the writer's room, despite it sounding on paper like a "classic Community scenario." (read that in a sarcastic TV announcer voice) Yes, in case you skipped the headline it is that bad. Though my frustration stems from more exhaustion and disinterest at this...

MSPIFF 2013 Review: THE FIFTH SEASON's Apocalypse Hits Freakishly Close To Home

Posted: 02 May 2013 07:30 PM PDT

There is no denying that contemporary audiences are obsessed with the on-screen fantasy of all-out social breakdown. And with the exception of the poor humanoids being innocently victimized by interplanetary sadists, most cases involve our own maligned inventions retaliating and showing its teeth, sometimes literally. The popularity of the apocalypse, even if it is cinematic reverie, translates into an odd plebian embrace of good science that is otherwise dismissed as alarmist in the dailies. Zombies and mutant creatures may be pushing the envelope of what research is ready to support, but films like The Fifth Season that are a little more ambiguous about cause but very direct about effect hit freakishly close to home. Less than a month ago, a front page New York Times...

The film opens the fest at the DGA tonight. CHINK Director Stanley Yung's crime thriller certainly has an inflammatory name. Bloody Clips From Kitamura's NO ONE LIVES Threaten Brutal Deaths To All

Posted: 02 May 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Kitamura Ryuhei's No One Lives is one of my picks for most intriguing indies getting released this month, and three newly-released clips -- plus the new poster -- amplify my interest. As a reminder, the official synopsis is diabolical simplicity itself: A ruthless criminal gang takes a young couple hostage and goes to ground in an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. When the captive girl is killed, the tables are unexpectedly turned. The gang finds themselves outsmarted by an urbane and seasoned killer determined to ensure that no one lives. Luke Evans toplines a cast that includes, Adelaide Clemens, Lee Tergesen, Laura Ramsey, Derek Magyar, Beau Knapp, America Olivo, Brodus Clay and Lindsey Shaw. The clips are brutal and NSFW, giving Kitamura opportunity...

Spielberg Selects Sniper Movie With Bradley Cooper

Posted: 02 May 2013 04:30 PM PDT

After postponing production on Robopocalypse indefinitely, Steven Spielberg has found his next project. And it's a timely one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg will direct American Sniper, based on the autobiography of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who became a military assassin and recorded more kills than any other American. Bradley Cooper has been developing the project; he will serve as a producer and play the title role. Jason Hall has completed a script, and production is tentatively scheduled to begin early in 2014. Spielberg put Robopocalypse on hold back in January, stating that he "found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally. .. I'm starting on a new script and we'll have this movie back on...

Watch Steve Coogan And Rob Brydon Impersonate Michael Caine While Dubbed In Spanish

Posted: 02 May 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Call this today's moment of cognitive disconnect. As any regular reader of this site will know, we are big fans of Steve Coogan in these parts and particularly big fans when he teams up with director Michael Winterbottom. He did just this with The Trip, a TV series edited into feature film form for international distribution which featured Coogan and fellow comedian Rob Brydon as themselves on a tour of Northern England to review restaurants and generally nag at one another. It's pretty fantastic stuff and the signature moment of it is, undoubtedly the Caine-off - a sequence in which Coogan and Brydon attempt to one up one another at the dinner table with their impersonations of Michael Caine. Now here's the thing. The Trip is about...

More Mayhem In Japanese Trailer For Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM

Posted: 02 May 2013 11:15 AM PDT

Should there be any doubt about what inspired director Guillermo Del Toro to create his giant robots versus giant monsters film Pacific Rim this latest trailer for the picture - this one created specifically for the Japanese market - makes it very, very clear. He says so openly in a personal introduction, for one thing, and then there's the unmistakeable framing of the final shot. This whole thing is a great big thank you from Del Toro to Japan for years of giant sized robotic and kaiju mayhem. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type...

Review: HENTAI KAMEN Delivers A Face Full Of Crotch

Posted: 02 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

There's an all too common formula for trailers for domestic titles in Japanese theatres: shots of a high school age daughter, a jovial old rascal, a man running through the streets, and a lot of crying. So the HK: Hentai Kamen commercial came as quite a shock. I was already aware of the manga - having been shown it by a friend - and it is not something easily forgotten, but the movie adaptation had passed me by until the perverted super hero was up there on the big screen in all his mankini, stockings and panty wearing glory. Book and film tell the story of a high school student, Kyousuke, a sweet natured doofus with the heroic heart of his deceased detective father but without...

JANE GOT A GUN But No Actors. Bradley Cooper Becomes Latest To Abandon Ship.

Posted: 02 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT

I don't believe I've ever seen a production as anticipated as the Natalie Portman starring and produced western Jane Got A Gun turn so bad, so quickly. The early exit of Michael Fassbender was clearly an omen, in retrospect, but nobody thought too much of it at the time as scheduling things happen all the time. It was just a simple little shuffle ... Fassbender left, Joel Edgerton - already cast as the villain - moved over into the hero role and Jude Law came on as villain. And then the wheels fell off.Director Lynne Ramsay beat a hasty retreat on the eve of production, actors and crew turning up to day one of principal photography to discover they had no director. Ramsay was replaced...

Mr Hyperbole Teases WALKING WITH DINOSAURS 3D In First International Trailer

Posted: 02 May 2013 09:30 AM PDT

If you played this teaser without watching the video and just listening to Mr Voice, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's the latest Jaden Smith movie. But open your eyes and you'd see it's a tale about a little dinosaur who has to journey to...grow...to become...a hero. Yep, it's Walking With Dinosaurs 3D, the latest installment in the mega successful franchise which didn't just include a TV series but spawned an Arena Spectacular which played in cities all over the world. I imagine this trailer is basically selling more of the same to that audience - and their parents. Check it out below....

Review: KISS OF THE DAMNED Recreates Euro-Horror On A Grand Scale

Posted: 02 May 2013 09:01 AM PDT

There are few sub-genres of film quite as specific and instantly recognizable as '70s Euro-horror. Filmmakers like Jean Rollin, Jess Franco, Jose Ramon Larraz and a few others left an indelible mark on the international horror market. Their creations were just as concerned with sensuality as they were with shock value, and as a result, the films positively oozed sex, literally sometimes. It is from this mold that Xan Cassavetes' (Z Channel) debut narrative feature, Kiss of the Damned, was cast. Cassavetes manages to recreate much of the atmosphere and feel of those classic Euro-horrors, often to the point of irritation for a true fan. Is it worth watching Kiss of the Damned when I can now reach into my Blu-ray collection and pull out...

Review: SOMETHING IN THE AIR Inspires Youthful Passion And Energy

Posted: 02 May 2013 08:01 AM PDT

At the outset, Olivier Assayas's Something in the Air is a biographical nostalgia piece about growing up in the aftermath of the May '68 events in France. But what it really is, is a social experiment in which 18-19 year olds, most of them first-time actors, reenact the youth of perhaps the most volatile time in contemporaneous French society, when the revolution seemed palpable. As it was revealed in my interview with Mia Hansen-Løve (director of Goodbye First Love and the current wife of Assayas), Assayas has a real knack for connecting with and getting great performances out of young actors. (Hansen-Løve herself was in Assayas's Late August, Early September when she was 17 and swears that the experience changed her life.) The French title...

HOW TO USE GUYS WITH SECRET TIPS Wins Audience Award at Udine Far East Film Festival 2013

Posted: 02 May 2013 07:30 AM PDT

The Udine Far East Festival Audience Prize, the Golden Mulberry, was awarded to Lee Won-suk's Korean comedy How To Use Guys With Secret Tips, which our own Pierce Conran said rises admirably above its title. The surreal, pulpy morality tale from Thailand, Countdown, took home second prize and Ip Man - The Final Fight received third. The Black Dragon, voted on by attendees with a special Black Dragon accreditation, went to Chang Jung-chi's lyrical, inspiring Touch of the Light. And, in internet-land, the web-based jury of MYmovies awarded their prize to Miki Satoshi's eccentric It's Me, It's Me! I'll be following up in the near future with one more belated review from the festival, but in the meantime, congratulations to all of the winners!...

Review: THE ICEMAN Makes A Slushy, Sloppy Mess

Posted: 02 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Like a stiff mixed drink that doesn't live up to the quality of its ingredients, The Iceman proves to be an unpalatable, underwhelming crime drama. All the great parts are there; we've got a simmering Michael Shannon in a 70s gangster drama, and a true-life tale of a mob enforcer thought to have killed more than 200 people. Shannon's paired with another master of the quiet-rage-followed-by-explosive-outburst, Ray Liotta, and we should be seeing nothing other than fireworks here, some kind of angry man version of the De Niro / Pacino Heat meetup. I still want to see that movie, frankly, and hopefully one day it will be made. A year after her success as a screechy harpy in Black Swan, Winona Ryder also makes a...
