KICK-HEART: Pro Wrestling Gets Animated And Exciting In Yuasa Masaaki's New Video

Posted: 18 Apr 2013 03:30 AM PDT

Anime director Yuasa Masaaki (Kaiba, Mind Game, The Tatami Galaxy) and Production I.G successfully ran a Kickstarter fundraising program for their new short film, Kick-Heart, in October last year. Stretch goals have allowed the film's runtime to be increased from 10 to 12 minutes. Now a new video clip showing fresh footage from the film has been released, and it looks fantastic. Kick-Heart is a love story between Romeo, a successful pro wrestler, and Juliet, a nun who lives a secret double-life as a female pro wrestler. Romeo's secret is that he enjoys taking a beating in the ring, while Juliet feels invigorated when facing her opponents as a wrestler. When the two meet in the ring, the fireworks fly. Their story is set in the...

STAR WARS Ruminations: A Film A Year, Plus Chewbacca's Severed Head

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 11:30 PM PDT

Things have slowed down relatively speaking on the Star Wars front, with most of J.J.'s time spent prepping his second (and presumably final?) foray into the word of Star Trek.Still, there was some solid news confirmed today. At Cinemacon this afternoon, Chairman of the Disney Corporation Alan Horn officially confirmed plans for a film a year starting in 2015 with the release of Episode VII. Unlike the three year gap that separated the other films in the series, it was confirmed that Episode VIII would be screening in the summer of 2017, and Episode IX in 2019.In the even years between, we're to expect those standalone films that have been discussed, with still no official confirmation on what to expect. From what the announcement sounded...

Review: FINDING MR. RIGHT Sees Tang Wei Back in Favour

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Tang Wei scores big at the mainland box office with this comedy drama about a spoilt mistress who must hide out in the US and reconcile her lifestyle when she becomes pregnant with her lover's child. All has been forgiven, it seems, as Tang Wei - once banned from making films in China after her role in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution - has sat comfortably at the top of the box office charts in China for four consecutive weeks with her latest film, Finding Mr. Right.Shot almost entirely in the USA, the film stars Tang as Jiajia, mistress of rich Beijing businessman Mr. Zhong, who is shipped off to Seattle when it is discovered she is pregnant. In order to avoid a scandal back home, Jiajia...

First R.I.P.D. Trailer is MEN IN BLACK Vs. Zombies

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Remember back in the Summer of 1997 when Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black hits screens? Sure, the film was a lot of fun, but it was also a lot like Ivan Reitman's Ghostbusters, only with aliens standing in for the ghosts. Fast forward 16 years and its Sonnenfeld's adaptation of Lowell Cunnigham's comic that is being rehashed, this time transplanting aliens with the undead and Will Smith's rookie cop with Ryan Reynolds' recently gun-downed law enforcer.Other than that, everything seems to be almost exactly the same, with Jeff Bridges taking on grizzled veteran partner duties, as stetson-sporting gunslinger Roy Pulsipher, in R.I.P.D. (an acronym for Rest In Peace Department - clever, right?) from Red director Robert Schwentke. Again the source material is a comic book, this time penned...

First Trailer For Sato Sakichi's Manga Adaptation TOKYO-YAMIMUSHI

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 08:00 PM PDT

It has been some time since Sato Sakichi directed a film. It was announced not too long ago that the Tokyo Zombie and The Bugs Detective director and screenwriter would be adapting the manga Tokyo-Yamimushi. A scant couple of months later and there is already a first trailer for the film. Using the synopsis of the manga we get an idea of what the film will be about:The series centers on Ryō Katō, a 23-year-old man who lives alone with no job, no hopes, and no savings. Ryō has wracked up 2.85 million yen (about US$30,600) in debt, and one day he is kidnapped by debt collectors. The debt collector Asamura then tells Ryō that his life is "similar to a bug's" and offers him a...

Review: DRUG WAR Supplies High-Octane Entertainment

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Thank God for Johnnie To and his latest film Drug War, which features some masterfully made high-octane entertainment. Heroic cops battle villainous thugs and it all looks slick and stylish. Is it a classic? Probably not. Did I like it? Oh HELL yes! The Story: The Tianjin police force gets a lucky break in their war against drugs when they capture an amphetamine manufacturer. Threatened with the death sentence, the gangster does whatever it takes to stay alive, even if that means turning informer on his bosses and family in exchange for his own life. This gives the drug squad a unique chance to set a trap for the secret gang led by legendary boss "Uncle Bill," and destroy his organization from within. But the...

ONLY GOD FORGIVES Poster Goes Neon And Mysterious

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 06:00 PM PDT

As we've been tracking Only God Forgives, Nicolas Winding Refn's upcoming thriller starring Ryan Gosling, we've noted an excess of brutality, blood, and Bangkok, where the film is set. A new poster, however, shifts things in another direction, reminding me of the poster for Holy Motors. Quality-wise, that pleases me, since the Leos Carax picture is one of my favorites of recent times, but I have no idea how the neon mask is meant to sell anyone on the idea of going to see Only God Forgives, especially those whose interest has not yet been aroused. Point in its favor: I like the weathered effect of the full-size poster. Does the new poster intrigue or mystify? Only God Forgives is due in U.S. theaters on...

LONE RANGER Trailer Kindly Lays Out The Entire Movie In Advance

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 05:00 PM PDT

In the recent tradition of Hollywood studios telling potential moviegoers everything they need to know about a potential blockbuster in advance, Disney presents the newest trailer for The Lone Ranger. Previous teasers and trailers have only hinted at the first team-up between the titular white-hatted character, played by Armie Hammer, and his faithful companion Tonto, essayed by the indefatigable Johnny Depp, but now we get a brief origin story and various plot points spelled out clearly. On the bright side, Disney's desire to inform means that thrifty readers can save money by watching the trailer, thus feeling that they've already seen the movie, which will be unleashed upon the world on July 3. And there's always the possibility, however slight, that the actual complete, finished...

Hey New Zealand! Ant Timpson Sends You An Invitation To Death

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 04:30 PM PDT

A couple of days ago I received an invite in my inbox from ABCs of Death producer Ant Timpson to attend the New Zealand premiere of the film on April 20 at The Civic in Auckland. The invite is such a great piece of writing (that resonates for anyone who has grudgingly attended an event to support a mate or colleague) that with his permission I'm publishing it here. As the premiere is a public event, this doubles as a missive to everyone in Auckland who loves genre cinema to pony up and see the film. So without further ado:You are cordially invited to the New Zealand Premiere of THE ABCs OF DEATH, a feature film I produced with Tim League of Austin, Texas and Magnolia...

Dallas IFF 2013 Review: BOUNTY KILLER Is Silly, Inventive, and Better Than Many Hollywood Blockbusters

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 03:50 PM PDT

Right from the start, you'll likely know whether you want to continue down the hilarious and overly violent schlock that is part of Bounty Killer's charm. We are given a world where bounty killers--bounty hunters with the license to kill off the white-collar criminals in a post-apocalyptic wasteland of the United States--are rock stars and adored. They appear on magazine covers, have groupies, and reap wealthy rewards for dispatching the bad guys that ruined the world's economy and environment. Is it a film that has more relevance today than ever before? Well, maybe it would have been better timed a few years back after the stock market crash, but writers Jason Dodson, Colin Ebeling, and Henry Saine were likely working on the original idea...

Sofia Coppola's THE BLING RING to Open Cannes 2013 Un Certain Regard

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 01:49 PM PDT

While there are a ton of rumors floating around about what films will be announced at tomorrow's Cannes Film Festival press conference, we have one official announcement we can share right now. Cannes has announced today that Sofia Coppola's bad girl crowd pleaser The Bling Ring will open the festival's Un Certain Regard program. Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, and Taissa Farmiga star in this true story of fame obsessed girls who track celebrities online in order to rob their homes. While Coppola's Marie Antoinette played in official competition in 2006, many had questioned if the subject matter of her latest film was up to snuff to compete for the Palme d'Or. We now have that answer, though playing as an official selection in Un...

Review: WHICH WAY IS THE FRONT LINE FROM HERE? Tells the Story of a Brave Combat Journalist

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think it is the fantasy of many young men to travel to the hot spots of armed conflict and be a war photographer. It's that combination of danger, wanderlust, detachment from material world and freedom from daily grind we call life. It's that 'freedom that you can leave your world behind with a drop of a hat' thing. I think in every men there is a sense of longing for that coveted place called solitude that is far deeper and greater than just a misguided machismo. With this in mind, Tim Hetherington, combat photographer, journalist, humanitarian, director of Restrepo, who died in Libya in 2011, is remembered by his fellow combat journalist and co-director of that documentary, Sebastian Junger....

Review: FILLY BROWN Is A Home Grown Must See

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 10:00 AM PDT

I can't say enough good about Filly Brown, the first film from directing team Michael Olmos and Youssef Delara. They have both directed their own features independently, but clearly this was a team that was meant to be. Not only is Filly Brown expertly directed, but Gina Rodriguez is stellar in her breakout performance. Like Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone two years ago - this girl is going places. Bolstered by a solid supporting cast lead by Lou Diamond Phillips, an amazing soundtrack and a script that hits every beat perfectly, Filly Brown is a must see. Rodriguez plays Filly Brown, a feisty young woman who has had to grow up quickly. Whether it's taking care of her little sister, working in her uncle's tattoo...

Pirates, Thieves, and Monsters: BLACK SAILS Teaser From Producer Michael Bay

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 09:30 AM PDT

As a producer, Michael Bay has favored horror projects, so the teaser for pirate adventure Black Sails might be described as expanding his boundaries -- just a touch. The TV series, given an eight-episode order by U.S. premium cable channel Starz, deserves an extra nudge up the interest meter because Neil Marshall directed the first episode.Black Sails is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, taking place 20 years before the events in the book. Toby Stephens stars as Captain Flint, with Mark Ryan (the voice of Bumblebee in Transformers), Luke Arnold as John Silver, Zach McGowan, and Hannah New among the cast. Production began in South Africa in January, with the series set to debut next year. Starz owns international rights as well...

Interview: Sebastian Junger On The Life Of A Combat Reporter

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Which Way Is The Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington is a documentary about a well-regarded combat reporter who died in a rocket attack by the Gaddafi troops in Misrata, Libya, in 2011. It is directed by his friend and colleague Sebastian Junger. A few years back, they made an award-winning documentary together, Restrepo, while embedded with a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's deadly Korengal Valley. I got a chance to sit down with Junger this past week. Perhaps best known for his best-selling book, The Perfect Storm, Junger exudes masculinity and charisma as he speaks freely about his friend, war and dangers of combat reporting.Which Way Is The Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington...

Martial Arts Legend Gordon Liu's Health Condition Deteriorating Following Stroke

Posted: 17 Apr 2013 08:30 AM PDT

In August 2011, Gordon Liu, Hong Kong martial arts legend and star of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Kill Bill 1 & 2 plus numerous other classic films, suffered a major stroke that left him completely paralyzed on the right side of his body. It appears that his condition has deteriorated over time and now he is not talking or moving as well as he was six months ago. Since the stroke, he has lost almost 20kg in weight. The Hong Kong media has also reported that he has used up most of his savings on medical therapy, and is considering selling his only property (his old home) to cover the costs of ongoing treatment. Mr. Liu recently allowed a visit at the hospital by reporters from...
