TRANSFORMERS 4 to Cast Chinese Roles via Reality TV Show Posted: 19 Apr 2013 12:15 AM PDT The producers of Michael Bay's upcoming Transformers 4 will launch a reality TV audition show to cast four Chinese wannabes in the film. Previous installments of the franchise have proved incredibly popular in mainland China (Dark of the Moon is currently No.4 in the country's all-time box office chart). It was recently announced that Paramount Pictures' Transformers 4, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, will be a co-production with Chinese companies Jiaflix Enterprizes and China Movie Channel, will be partly shot in China and include some exclusive Chinese content (as is the case with Marvel's imminent Iron Man 3). They are now taking the idea one step further by giving four lucky Chinese citizens (two with prior acting experience and two... |
Dallas IFF 2013 Review: BLOOD BROTHER Shines An Honest, Humorous Light On A Sad Situation Posted: 18 Apr 2013 09:24 PM PDT We all search for meaning, and Blood Brother shows just how one man found his calling in India. He had no pretension of this happening. He was on vacation there. He tells us he didn't even like kids that much. When he ran across an AIDS group home in India that helps kids and women have a sense of normalcy, he was hooked. His life in America felt like a cruel joke. So, he does his best to get back and stay. That's what Blood Brother revolves around, following Rocky Braat. Director and Rocky's best friend Steve Hoover provides most of the camerawork when he follows his friend back to India to document the experience. We learn about Rocky's past and how he grew... |
Ariane Fortin And Mary Spencer Don The Gloves In Boxing Doc LAST WOMAN STANDING Posted: 18 Apr 2013 02:00 PM PDT Soon to premiere at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto, directors Juliette Lammers and Lorraine Price step into the fascinating world of women's boxing for the documentary feature Last Woman Standing. In 2012, the Olympic Games included women's boxing for the first time in history. But, only three weight categories would be admitted - 51kg, 60kg and 75kg. For two of the world's best fighters, both from Canada, this meant the end of a friendship and the beginning of a fierce rivalry.Last Woman Standing is a feature documentary film that follows world champion boxers and former friends, Ariane Fortin and Mary Spencer, as they fight for an Olympic dream that can only belong to one.Combat sports also provoke a certain amount of controversy and interest and... |
Review: ERRORS OF THE HUMAN BODY Captures Frailty And Darkness Posted: 18 Apr 2013 01:01 PM PDT Geneticist Geoff Burton relocates to Dresden, Germany to work on groundbreaking new project, a human regenerative gene. Burton is a celebrity in the field, his reputation based on his work and research into a rare genetic mutation that took the life of his son. His marriage and career suffered because of that loss and Burton is looking to rebound from this tragedy and get to work. But old feelings surface. At the institute he finds himself teamed up with his former intern, colleague, and perhaps more, Rebekka. And there is also Jarek -- an ambitious scientist who may or may not be carrying out suspicious genetic research outside of lab during the night -- who eagerly seeks recognition from someone of Burton's status in the... |
BYZANTIUM Trailer Beautifully Depicts the Flow of Blood and Time Posted: 18 Apr 2013 11:30 AM PDT In a post-Twilight movie landscape, where zombies seem to own the pop cultural zeitgeist for the moment, Neil Jordan's Byzantium is a bit of a curious creature out of time. The film, which played to a muted, somewhat baffled, response on last year's festival circuit unveils itself in a handsomely cut trailer that shows off the luxurious beauty of the cinematography and several signature images: a tiered waterfall of blood, elongated fingernails used instead of fangs, and the ample bosom of Gemma Arterton. If you want to do a more stately and classical take on the modern vampire (read: no sparkling emo treacle) with just a hint of that lurid True Blood pulp, it would appear that Neil Jordan is indeed the correct man for... |
Opening: Rob Zombie's THE LORDS OF SALEM Divides Audiences Posted: 18 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT Rob Zombie's latest horror opus has certainly divided our critics. First out of the gate came Festival Editor Ryland Aldrich's review from Toronto: It appears that Rob Zombie may have been studying up on his David Lynch lately as the metal-head-turned-filmmaker's latest is more head trip than it is horror. That's not to say The Lords of Salem doesn't have plenty of scares, but only a few of them come from cheap "gotcha" moments. This makes the film Zombie's most mature directorial work to date and a very enjoyable midnight entry. And the premise? The story revolves around Heidi, a popular radio DJ in modern day Salem played by Sheri Moon Zombie. Always on the lookout for new talent, Heidi finds more than she's looking... |
Review: IN THE HOUSE is François Ozon's Best in Years Posted: 18 Apr 2013 09:01 AM PDT In François Ozon's new film In the House, it is clear from the title sequence on a school notebook and as Fabrice Luchini's jaded high school literature teacher cynically commenting on the new rule on school uniforms in the first few scenes, that something deliciously sinister is brewing. Germain (Fabrice Luchini) notices the writing of Claude (Ernst Umhauer) while correcting mountains of his students' weekly assignment. It's the 16-year old's description of his friend's mom that catches his eye, "that unmistakable odor of a middle-class woman," that stands out among the sea of mindless scribbles about cell phones and pizzas. He reads on and sees potential. His interest is piqued. After reading more of Claude's 'observations,' Germain is hooked. He zeros in on the boy, tutoring... |
Battling Monks And Flashing Blades In Full ONCE UPON A TIME IN VIETNAM Trailer Posted: 18 Apr 2013 08:30 AM PDT Dustin Nguyen makes his much anticipated directorial debut with martial arts fantasy Once Upon A Time In Vietnam (Lua Phat), a fight flick spectacle that owes equal debts to American westerns, steampunk aesthetics and local influences. We've been tracking this one from all the way back in script stage when it was known as Monk On Fire and with a summer release coming the full trailer has just been released.Verdict? Things are looking rather good indeed. If there was one area of concern - and one area not really addressed by the previous teaser - it was how the visual effects would come out as this is still a relatively new area for Vietnam but the visuals are looking strong from start to finish. And... |
New Trailer For Refn's ONLY GOD FORGIVES Features Fresh Footage, Fresh Violence Posted: 18 Apr 2013 08:10 AM PDT Freshly announced in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, a new international trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives has arrived online boasting a decent amount of new footage, an increased focus on the story and a bit more action. Ten years ago in Bangkok Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julian's brother kills a prostitute, the police reaches out to retired cop Chang, known as the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughters murderer, then restores order by chopping off the man's right hand.Julian's mother Jenna, the head of a powerful criminal... |
Review: LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED Effortlessly Charms Posted: 18 Apr 2013 07:06 AM PDT Pierce Brosnan is an acquired taste. I like him. I can't put a finger on why, but I do. If he's not your cup of tea, I suspect you'll find little to enjoy here. And that's a shame, because Love Is All You Need is an understated pleasure. Susanne Bier's charming film sees Ida (Trine Dyrholm), fresh out of chemotherapy, catch her husband (Kim Bodnia from The Bridge and Bleeder) in a compromising position with the young "Thilde from accounts." Flying solo to her daughter's wedding in Italy, she literally bumps into lonely widower Philip (Pierce Brosnan), the father of her daughter's fiancé. As family and friends convene on Philip's beautiful villa, there's more than a passing resemblance to that quintessential piece on family dysfunction,... |
Brussels 2013 Wrap: Blood, Guts, Singing Filmmakers Posted: 18 Apr 2013 06:00 AM PDT During the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, I saw vengeful ghosts, vampire threesomes, transvestite killers, monstrous gorillas, giant spiders and at least a dozen decapitations. Just as entertaining though, were the multiple directors that I saw singing a cappella to audiences of hundreds. I'm not sure when or how the festival tradition started (nor do I want to know), but literally every director who takes the stage to introduce their film is immediately met with a resounding chant from the audience of Chanson! Chanson! (That's "song" in French.) Most did not have a chance to thank people or say "enjoy the film." If you go to BIFFF as a filmmaker, you must sing. The reactions to this demand varied widely. Neil Jordan reluctantly went through... |

Representation from Asia is strong, with Miike Takashi's Straw Shield, Jia Zhangke's A Touch of Sin, and Kora-Eda Hirokazu's Like Father, Like Son making the competition selection.
