Michael Mann Hunting for Chinese Hackers in Hong Kong

Michael Mann Hunting for Chinese Hackers in Hong Kong

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 01:00 AM PDT

The Hollywood Reporter has picked up a story in local Hong Kong tabloid The Apple Daily, revealing that Michael Mann was in town last weekend to scout locations for his new as-yet-untitled hacker thriller. Chris Hemsworth has already signed on as the lead in the film, and apparently Chinese stars including Tang Wei and Nick Cheung could be joining him very soon.According to the report, both Tang (Lust, Caution) and Cheung (The Beast Stalker), as well as Shawn Yue (Infernal Affairs), were all seen visiting the hotel where Mann was staying last Sunday afternoon. The director was also spotted scouting areas of Jordan (a bustling urban area close to Mongkok in Kowloon) later the same day. While details of the film's plot have yet to be...

HK Filmart 2013: BLIND DETECTIVE Press Conference

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 11:30 PM PDT

Ah, the excitement of a press conference! Actually, though it may sound dry and boring -- and I'm sure the repetition would dilute the impact quickly -- the first press conference I attended in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago proved to be highly entertaining. For a long-time fan of Hong Kong cinema, there's the fun of seeing Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng live on stage, in front of dozens of photographers, not to forget director Johnnie To, all to introduce the teaser and first posters for the upcoming Blind Detective. And, though the event was conducted entirely in Cantonese, in which I am not fluent at all, it's not exactly difficult to follow what's going on in the highlights presented in the video...

First Look at Beardless Chris Hemsworth in Ron Howard's RUSH

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Apparently Ron Howard has been doing something else besides making new episodes of Arrested Development. He's gone and made himself a true-sporting-story-of-battling-rivals-overcoming-the-odds-in-cars movie. Formula 1 cars at that, and starring everyone's favourite Australian Norse God, Chris Hemsworth.Check out the first trailer for Rush below, and turn up those speakers....

Watch Allu Arjun Stab The Crap Out Of Some Ninjas In IDHARAMMAYILATHO

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 08:30 PM PDT

Our latest AMAZING Tollywood trailer comes to Twitch courtesy of the hardest working director in Andhra Pradesh, Puri Jagganadh. This time around, Jagganadh has taken on the challenge of turning pretty boy Allu Arjun into a cold blooded killing machine, and it looks like it might be pretty solid. This latest film is titled Idharammyilatho, which translates roughly as "With Two Girls", but don't get too excited, this is Tollywood after all.As is usually the case, it's pretty difficult to get a grasp on what the film is about from this first trailer, but it would appear that Allu Arjun, better known as either Stylish Star or Bunny to his fans, is kicking it up a notch in the stabbing department. Bunny delivers some pretty...

Get Initiated Into 1970s Sharpie Culture With Michael Kratochvil and Ladyhawke

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 07:30 PM PDT

In 1960s and 1970s Australia, one of the prominemt subcultures of suburban Melbourne were the Sharpies. Also known as Sharps, these were members of violent suburban youth gangs, so named due to their focus on looking and dressing "sharp".Now in this fantastic music video for Jacques Renault's Ladyhawke remix, directed by Michael Kratochvil, we can revisit those times safely as an observer. So often directors trying to capture history on screen tend to fail their ambitions by making everything look brand new, or by mistakenly incorporating anachronisms, but here Kratochvil really succeeds in capturing not only the old look but also the mood and mannerisms of these gangs. Now, whoever is writing a Mods vs Sharpies movie please give the directing reins to this guy. I...

Raro Video USA has been amassing a virile and potent collection of Italian genre classics on US home video since their release of Federico Fellini's The Clowns back in 2011. In the two years since they've also dedicated themselves to the preservation and proliferation of little known masterpieces of Eurocrime from some of the genre's greatest artists and performers. Following up on their stellar Fernando DiLeo box set of the Millieu Trilogy in 2012, Raro begins another dalliance with the master on May 28th with their international DVD debut of DiLeo's Shoot First, Die Later.Shoot First, Die Later is only the beginning of the DiLeo goodness coming our way. Matt Damon's Mech Suit Is The Star Of First ELYSIUM Poster

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 03:15 PM PDT

You'll have to wait until tomorrow to see the first trailer for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, but the first poster has arrived today to whet the appetite. And true to what is clearly shaping up to be Blomkamp's form, with the ideas being the stars more than the actors, that first artwork throws the focus not on Matt Damon but on the exo-skeleton mech suit he's wearing. In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium -...

Dallas IFF 2013 Review: THE BOUNCEBACK Thrives On Honest Awkwardness

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Comedy can come from honesty, and that's The Bounceback's greatest strength. While much of the film is over the top with its antics, there's a crushing truth to the scenarios within that may hit you unexpectedly. Breakups are rarely clean and they often leave a smear across various friendships because of that. As hard as Bryan Poyser's film may make you laugh, it will also make you notice how much we can mess things up for ourselves if we aren't careful. Another great strength is that this film does very contemporary things with how we build and work out relationships. A girl doesn't have to give you her name. She just has to call her phone from yours once and give you the OK...

The Directors Of MADAME TUTLI PUTLI Return With COCHEMARE

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 03:00 PM PDT

What do you get when you take Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski - collectively known as Clyde Henry, the directing duo behind Oscar nominated animated short Madame Tutli Putli - and match them up with the producers of equally acclaimed shorts Next Floor and Danse Macabre and Montreal based musician Patrick Watson? You get upcoming short film Cochemare.Blending animation, live action, and stereoscopic 3D, Cochemare is an immersive, tactile, and sensory experience. As the viewer journeys from the mystical Forest of Storms to the orbiting International Space Station, the film forces us to confront our notions of voyeurism, femininity, and the separation of body and mind. This particular creative team is responsible for some of the most unique, engaging and challenging work we've come across over...

Review: PUNCHING THE CLOWN Is Pure Comedy

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 02:00 PM PDT

With the likes of Sarah Silverman and Moby singing the film's praise Punching the Clown certainly is a huge industry in-joke yet it is also accessible for general fans of comedy. Aspiring - and frankly hopeless-  muso comedian Henry Phillips (as himself) plays the lamest and most inappropriate venues for his specific form of dark comedy folk music. He moves to LA and in with his wannabe actor - think 'Batman at kids' parties - brother (Matt Walker) , picks up an amiable agent and gets noticed for all the wrong reasons at a high profile event. Before long he is caught up in a lie even he is not fully aware of as he commits to record contracts and gets booked into packed gigs....

Dolph Lundgren And Tony Jaa Star In A MAN WILL RISE

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 01:30 PM PDT

It was back in late January that rumblings began to emerge that Thai martial arts star Tony Jaa was slated to co-star with Jean Claude Van Damme in an upcoming international action film. The project at the time was titled Local Hero and we're told that project has shifted slightly with Dolph Lundgren now starring opposite Jaa and retitled A Man Will Rise. The first images from behind the scenes have arrived, tipping the fact that it is some sort of Eastern / Western with Conan Stevens (Game Of Thrones) and - I believe - Patrick Kazu Tang (Raging Phoenix) also starring. We're told Tang may also be contributing on the fight choreography side of things. Beyond the simple fact that this means that Jaa...

Psst. Liberace was gay. And lest there was any confusion over that fact, there it is right up front and center in the new trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Behind The Candelabra. Soderbergh is plying his trade for HBO with this one, a biopic starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon based on a biography penned by Liberace's much younger lover Scott Thorson. It's got pianos, glitter, and lots and lots of hair. Take a look below!...

Tony Stark Calls Out The Mandarin In New IRON MAN 3 Clip

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 12:45 PM PDT

While I personally would be interested to witness Tony Stark calling out IN Mandarin that is not what is happening in the latest clip from the Shane Black directed Iron Man 3. No, what's happening is that Robert Downey's titular hero is calling out THE Mandarin, i.e. the villain played by Ben Kingsley in this third outing. And there's Guy Pearce with a phone in his face recording the whole thing.Don't expect a lot of flash and bang from this latest peek at the latest from Marvel, it's really just a character moment designed to establish the tone of the piece. Check it below.Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his...

Review: GAME OF THRONES S3E02, DARK WINGS DARK WORDS (Or, Sansa Swims With The Sharks And They're Not Who You Think)

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 10:30 AM PDT

If the season three debut of Game Of Thrones felt a little light on the Stark clan that is very definitely not the case with episode two, an hour that is not quite all Stark all the time but comes pretty damn close. As we bounce from family member to family member the episode plays very much like a re-introduction with very little happening in terms of story as we simply re-establish where everyone is and what's happening. And so, on with that. For a change this week Bran and Sansa end up ranking as the most interesting plotlines and so while the show more or less leads with them we're going to end there and start instead with with Robb and what feels like his...

Twitchvision: Talking EVIL DEAD, THE SAPPHIRES, JURASSIC PARK 3D and ROGER EBERT RIP

New guest host for this weekend's Twitchvision, but we still managed to get through quite a bit! Talked about the Evil Dead remake (which I found pretty terrible, my sentiments shared by those expressed in Kurt Halfyard's review), Jurassic Park 3D (go see it!), and the charming if slight film The Sapphires. Also had another chance to express my admiration for Roger Ebert, and to once again publicly thank the man for being such an important person in my life as a film critic. Watch Glendyn Ivin's Incredible Promo for the New Zealand Fire Service

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 07:30 AM PDT

In just one minute Glendyn Ivin will make you cry. His promo for the New Zealand Fire Service (below) is so damn effective that I got dust in my eyes twice watching it in quick succession. For those unfamiliar, Ivin is an Australian director who we are big fans of here at Twitch. He won Cannes with Cracker Bag, directed Hugo Weaving's (still) career best performance in Last Ride, and has recently moved into acclaimed television, directing Puberty Blues, Offspring, and Beaconsfield, and is now gearing up to direct a massive WWI miniseries in 2014....

Brussels 2013 Review: FOUND Brings Sensitivity To Twisted Suburban Nightmare

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 05:00 AM PDT

"My brother keeps a human head in his closet." So intones twelve-year old narrator Marty at the beginning of Found, a pulpy, twisted coming-of-age thriller which, by the end, subjects poor kid to such ridiculous perversion and violence that the severed head seems kinda cute in comparison.  Produced on a budget that's probably even too low to be called shoe-string, Found is one part earnest coming-of-age melodrama, one part blood-soaked video-nasty. While director Scott Shcirmer's (adapting a novel by Todd Rigney) isn't completely successful navigating this tonal tightrope, there are enough memorable, and even brilliant parts of the uneven whole to make the film well-worth watching. That goes triple for those who grew up watching horror movies in the 80's and 90's. Now then, let's...
