THE ACT OF KILLING, OUTRAGE BEYOND, REAR WINDOW Among 2013 Sydney Film Festival First Titles

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 11:30 PM PDT

The three films in the above headline plus Richard Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army have just made the Sydney Film Festival in June a necessary trip north for me, with the festival unveiling these plus a slew of other anticipated titles in the first look at its programme today. Also of note is Red Obsession, a documentary about China's burgeoning interest in red wine, Park Chan-wook's cold blooded Stoker, and Wadjda, the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia. There's also Midnight's Children, the long-awaited adaptation of the Salman Rushdie novel. The guy attends the opening of an envelope so I fully expect Rushdie to make an appearance here too.As hinted in the headline, Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window is also screening at the festival. The screening is...

David Fincher's 20,000 LEAGUES To Shoot Down Under

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 09:30 PM PDT

It's official: David Fincher is coming to Australia. Just when I thought the salivating among film fanatics had reached its zenith due to the antipodean visit of Paul Thomas Anderson last year, along comes news that the Social Network, Fight Club and Aerosmith: Big Ones You Can Look At director will shoot his Disney epic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in Australia. The film which will be shot at Gold Coast's Village Roadshow Studios, was lured here by a massive $21.6 million dollar grant by the Australian government. The same government gave The Wolverine producers $12.8 million to shoot here. You know it's a strong economy here when the government can get away with that, and I'm looking forward to them wheeling out Paul Hogan for another series of ads:...

Australia's Hoyts Distribution Becomes StudioCanal

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 08:30 PM PDT

In what is largely a formal change after the French production and distribution company acquired Hoyts Distribution in July last year, the Australian and New Zealand distributor will now be known officially as StudioCanal. Hopefully this also means a step up for Hoyts/StudioCanal on the distribution front in Australia and New Zealand, especially with locally produced films that have serious international ambitions. Currently the distributor has Broken City and The Host in local cinemas. The change doesn't include Hoyts Cinemas, the big exhibition chain....

Okinawa International Movie Festival 2013: A Celebration of Laughter & Peace (Part 2)

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 07:00 PM PDT

I chose to dedicate my second full day at the 5th Okinawa International Movie Festival to exploring some of the shorts in the Local Origination Project section. These Community-Based Movies received funding from their respective region in return for highlighting values, interests and attractions unique to that specific area. The results were eclectic, ambitious and surprisingly entertaining, as the filmmakers pushed themselves to tell meaningful stories, while also exploring a variety of genres, styles and themes.Monday 25th MarchMG-2416While the title doesn't offer much of a clue, Taniguchi Hitonori's film is a loving homage to the work of directors like Quentin Tarantino, Tobe Hooper and Iguchi Noboru. Centring around the small community of Marukame in Kodokawa prefecture, the story follows Shinsuke as he returns home from...

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 05:11 PM PDT

It's been a long time coming, but Jonathan Levine's All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is finally coming to US theaters later this year -- and ahead of that theatrical release, the film will play the inaugural edition of the Stanley Film Festival. What's the Stanley Film Festival, you ask? Why it's an indie horror fest with its HQ set at Colorado's Stanley Hotel -- the hotel famous as the inspiration for Stephen King's Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Sounds like a pretty awesome idea. The Stanley Film Fest announced their first wave of programming and the solid lineup far from stops with Mandy Lane. Such fest faves as V/H/S/2, Here Comes The Devil, The Rambler, and Vanishing Waves are set to unspool between...

The Director Of KLOWN Goes Dark With Crime Thriller THE KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Call it a change of pace for director Mikkel Norgaard. A really, really big change of pace. Best known as the director of Klown - or Clown, or Klovn, depending on where you are - the comedy for which he directed forty two episodes of television plus the hit feature fil, Norgaard's body of work is dominated by the comedy forces of nature that are Klown stars Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen. And while his television work runs deeper and more diverse than that - he's also  directed four episodes of stellar political drama Borgen (The Castle), for instance - he's never going to really shake that tag until he does something else quite big and quite different on the big screen. And here it is.Norgaard...

CINEDELPHIA FILM FESTIVAL, Philly Gets Weird And Goes DIY April 4 - 27

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT

There's a very fundamental problem that plagues most film festivals in America today, particularly newer, smaller, still fledgling festivals. "Just what purpose do film festivals even serve now?"It's a frustrating question that most of us programmers, curators, and festival organizers would rather continue to ignore. It's the elephant in the room.  Like video rental stores, physical media, and the dying theatrical market, film festivals are becoming more and more antiquated with each passing year. What reason is there are the average film goers to spend the time, effort, and money on seeing films at a festival when the grand majority of movies playing will be readily available for on demand viewing in a short month or two? The running joke today amongst many acquistioners is...

BIFFF 2013 Preview: Russian Zombies, Japanese Werewolves and More!

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 11:45 AM PDT

For the 31st time, the good folks at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival have pulled together a cornucopia of the most horrifying, surreal, wacky and overall "fantastic" films of the year. The festival kicks off today, and I'm reporting from the ground in the unofficial world capital of fries, beer and chocolate, poised to plunge in and report all that's worth reporting back to the internet. The program features many films which have already been gathering great word-of-mouth on the festival circuit. Some notable ones that we've covered in the past include Vanishing Waves, Kiss of the Damned, The Complex, Byzantine, The Imposter, Frankenstein's Army and Antiviral. But for the most part, I'm not here to see movies that I already know about -- I'm...

Megatron Will Punch Chairman Mao In The Face. TRANSFORMERS 4 Officially A Chinese Co-Production.

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Here's a very simple lesson in Hollywood economics. When someone makes a movie that grosses comfortably over a hundred million dollars in some other, non-US territory, the studio responsible will do whatever it takes to maximize the presence of the sequel in that same territory. And so it comes as no surprise to learn that with Hollywood in general casting lusting eyes at the massive Chinese market and with Michael Bay's Transformers 3 grossing $165 million in the Chinese mainland, the upcoming Mark Wahlberg starring Transformers 4 will be an official Chinese co-production.The trade off is pretty much a no brainer from a production standpoint. In exchange for including some Chinese cast - cast always being a secondary concern in these films anyway - and...

Dory Keeps Swimming With FINDING NEMO Sequel In November 2015

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 10:46 AM PDT

Sequels to the original wave of Pixar hits are become de rigeur now, what with multiple Toy Story, Cars and Monsters Inc flicks and Finding Nemo is next up to bat with the sequel - Finding Dory - officially announced to hit screens in November 2015.BURBANK, Calif. (April 2, 2013) - When Dory said "just keep swimming" in 2003's Oscar®-winning film "Finding Nemo," she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar's "Finding Dory"--an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theatres on Nov. 25, 2015. "I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time," said DeGeneres. IFS Review: No Easy Answers In The Disturbing French Thriller VICTIMS

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Victims is an intriguing, disturbing indie thriller from France, one which uses a tense relationship between a seemingly well-meaning therapist and his patient to examine the darkest recesses of the human psyche. While the film isn't perfect, it is bleak, thought-provoking and appropriately twisted, and it definitely establishes director Robin Entreinger (who also wrote, shot and edited) as a unique talent to watch. At the same time, it's a tough film, one which will likely alienate many viewers with it's slow-burn, dialogue-driven approach and refusal tie anything up neatly. The film begins with the first meeting between Vincent, a psychiatrist, and Francis, his new patient. Francis is anti-social, insecure and very likely a sociopath, but, at the same time, he's completely honest about all of...

Marvel's AVENGERS 2 to Shoot in UK

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 06:55 AM PDT

Screen Daily is exclusively reporting that Marvel's sequel to The Avengers will begin shooting in early 2014 at Pinewood-Shepperton studios in the UK. This will continue an on-going relationship between the superhero creators and the Twickenham-based studios, where Thor: The Dark World recently wrapped and Guardians of the Galaxy will shoot this summer. This comes as a surprise - albeit a welcome one for the British film industry - as word off the China-based set of Iron Man 3 has been extremely positive and the smart money would have been on Marvel strengthening that relationship, while looking perhaps even to lock down co-production status for the film. Perhaps the last-minute change to that film's status in China does indeed hint at a souring of that particular...

Iconic Spanish Horror Director Jesús Franco Dies

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 05:53 AM PDT

Jesús "Jess" Franco - director of nearly 200 films, father of the 1960s Spanish horror boom and father of several generations of filmmakers - has died in Malaga of heart complications, at the age of 82.I don't think you could find a post-1970 horror filmmaker who doesn't know Franco's work or hasn't been influenced by him. From The Awful Dr. Orloff and Vampyros Lesbos to The Mansion of the Living Dead, his work was outrageous, bloody, sexy, gory, creepy, and crossed just about every line imaginable - some that even today's horror filmmakers wouldn't dare put a toe over. Making films in Spain in the 1960s wasn't easy. Censorship rules imposed by the fascist government meant that horror films were rare. But some changes to policy (made...

Seth Rogen Opens Up About His Childhood In New THIS IS THE END Red Band Trailer

To name a few you get Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Aziz Ansari, Jason Segel, Kevin Hart, Rihanna, Paul Rudd, and Christopher Mintz-plasse. It looks like the filmmakers all got on their phones and messaged everyone, "Who wants to die in our movie?" and everyone showed up. The comedy This Is...

WORLD WAR Z Preempts Censors, Moves Outbreak Source Out of China

Posted: 01 Apr 2013 07:58 PM PDT

Will the problems never end for World War Z? The Wrap is reporting that they have been told exclusively by a Paramount Executive that they will be re-cutting their $175 million Brad Pitt vehicle to avoid offending Chinese audiences. In Marc Forster's adaptation of the cult novel by Max Brooks, China is cited as the source of a zombie outbreak that subsequently consumes the entire planet. This is clearly a throwback to 2003's SARS epidemic and subsequent bird & pig flu scares that have shaken the region, and as a result makes sense as a believable epicentre within the context of the story. However, with China now the fastest growing film-going market in the world, and set to overtake the USA and clinch the number one spot within the next decade,...
