Review: COMMUNITY S4E10, Intro To Knots (Or, When Exposition On Betrayal Betrays The Funny)

For the four people that read these Community reviews on a regular basis: Apologies for being late. Perhaps we're past the point where doing a review this week feels relevant, or perhaps it's just that I was so underwhelmed by last night's episode I don't have a very compelling angle to take on this season's Christmas episode. After the fanciful and zany claymation adventures of Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas in season 2 and the Glee-bashing of last season's Regional Holiday Music, Intro To Knots is one tame Christmas episode, which might be okay if it worked as an episode, but themed, seasonal or otherwise, it's something of a dud.Jeff is hosting the study group's first holiday party outside of school. Since Pierce is in counseling with his...

That'll Do, Whale: Saying Goodbye to Film Criticism

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 10:01 AM PDT

My first film festival badge as press. This is my last post as a film critic. Seems like only yesterday two guys had a dream to make a fun movie website to belt out their affinity for all things cinema. Gordon and the Whale was born, and Rusty Gordon and I turned our passion into something great. We built a solid team and people started listening to our wit, charm, professionalism, and all around silliness. It was a wild ride of awesome.  Four and a half years later, I shut down GordonandtheWhale.com (read about it here). It was a the hardest decision I ever had to make, and months after, I questioned if it was the right decision. It was weird seeing my writers, who became...

Exclusive Character Poster For Stephen Fung's TAI CHI HERO

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 08:30 AM PDT

With Stephen Fung's Tai Chi Hero hitting US screens April 26th a series of character posters has been popping up online and here at Twitch we have an exclusive one to share as well. Lu Chan (Jayden Yuan) is still trying to find his place in Chen Village, the legendary town where everyone is a martial arts master...and Chen-style Tai Chi is forbidden to outsiders. But since he helped save the town from a frightening steam-powered machine, Yuniang (Angelababy), beautiful daughter of Grandmaster Chen (Tony Leung Ka-Fai), agrees to marry Lu Chan and bring him into the family.  It's only a formality, though - she is the teacher, and he is the student - and that suits Lu Chan just fine, as the mutant horn...

The Star And Director Of BORN TO FIGHT Reunite For VENGEANCE OF AN ASSASSIN

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Panna Rittikrai and Dan Chupong are getting back together. Best known as the mentor to and fight choreographer for Tony Jaa, Rittikrai had a long career as a screen fighter and director himself, the man plying his trade in a string of ultra low budget grinders never seen anywhere outside of Thailand until Jaa vaulted him to fame. And so when Rittikrai was given the first real budget of his career in 2004 to direct Born To Fight - a remake of one of his own earlier titles - nobody thought that much of it. It was, among other things, simply a gesture of respect from producers Sahamongkol, a thank you to the veteran performer who had groomed and prepared Tony Jaa to become by...

Ari Folman's THE CONGRESS To Open Director's Fortnight

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 07:15 AM PDT

It was back in 2008 that Ari Folman burst on to the international scene with Waltz With Bashir, a dazzling animated documentary that marked Folman as an enormous, unique talent and absolutely someone to watch with great interest going forward. When word got out that Folman's next project was an animated adaptation of iconic science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem's The Futurological Congress the anticipation spiked high. Lem - the writer of Solaris, among others - is one of the true giants of international science fiction and surprisingly little of his work has been adapted in English so the idea of one of his key works being handled by a director as strong as Folman ... well, that's a little something to look forward to.And we've...
