This Is The Timeline Where COMMUNITY Is Renewed For A Fifth Season

Posted: 11 May 2013 03:15 AM PDT

Word came late on Friday that network NBC and studio Sony had arrived at a deal for a fifth season of the ratings challenged, but beloved cult show Community. The fifth season will consist of at least 13 episodes that will fall somewhere on the 2013-2014 NBC schedule. Community joins Parks And Recreation as the only comedies to get renewed by the network, something of a feat considering its low ratings. But when you're on a network that's in last place and still pulling in decent ad shares for key demographics (the season finale on Thursday tied with American Idol for the coveted 18-34, and going up against the biggest ratings juggernaut on television (That'd be The Big Bang Theory, in case you were wondering),...

Fantastic Fest 2013 Announces a New Home in NW Austin

Posted: 10 May 2013 01:36 PM PDT

We always thought it was a bit ambitious to hope the South Lamar remodel of the Alamo Drafthouse's main digs would be done in time for this year's Fantastic Fest. Today brings news that delays have indeed reared their ugly teeth. But never fear, the fine folks at our favorite fest have already come up with a solution: An All New Drafthouse!! Okay, so they didn't build the new Alamo Lakeline location specifically to host Fantastic Fest 2013, but the new 10 screen house will be done just in time to play the role. The theater, located in Northwest Austin, also includes a bar and a convenient location to several hotels that should make it easy for us out-of-towners. It's a whole lot further...

Review: I DECLARE WAR Goes To Battle With Boys And Bullying

Posted: 10 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

One weekend day a number of the nerdier kids from the local middle school gather their sticks and twine and balloons filled with red dye, and head into the local woods to play capture-the-flag. Oh, those tweens today with their Bieber hair-cuts and their war games. While we are never given any visual context of this one-day war, it is implied that these games have been going on for some time and someone is keeping statistics. Jason Lapeyre's odyssey of two groups of children battling in the forest -- no this ain't The Hunger Games, more like a leafy, agora-version The Stanford Prison Experiment -- is a peculiar but totally engrossing combination of make-believe and reality. At that age friendships seem like everything, and everything...

Press Conference: A WOMAN AND WAR Director And Cast Talk About Their Controversial War Crimes Movie

Posted: 10 May 2013 09:59 AM PDT

A Woman and War (Senso No Hitori No Onna), the debut film from director Junichi Inoue is a bold political statement. As I noted in my review, it criticises the crimes Japan committed overseas during the second world war by following the lives of three damaged people in a struggling Tokyo during the final stages of the war. Noriko Eguchi, who has worked on many independent feature films and is a regular on Japanese television screens, plays a former prostitute who is unable to experience pleasure while making love. Masatoshi Nagase has been acting for 30 years and has worked with Jim Jarmusch on Mystery Train and with director Yoji Yamada on My Sons and The Hidden Blade. Here he plays a disenchanted writer sure...

Miyazaki Hayao and EVANGELION Director Anno Hideaki Have Been Collaborating on KAZE TACHINU

Posted: 10 May 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Very few people would have expected this news. The official website for Miyazaki Hayao's new film Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) has just made the surprise announcement that Anno Hideaki, director of Neon Genesis Evangelion, is providing the voice of the film's lead character Horikoshi Jiro, the man who designed the Zero fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. Anno worked as an animator on Miyazaki's 1984 classic Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, and recently collaborated again with Miyazaki on the short film Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo. He apparently got a call from Studio Ghibli producer Suzuki Toshio one day asking if he wanted to play Jiro, and he agreed to do it. This is the first...

Fabrice Du Welz Brandishes A COLT 45

Posted: 10 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Belgium's reigning enfant terrible, Fabrice du Welz burst on to the international scene in 2004 with Calvaire (The Ordeal), a punishing horror picture he followed in 2008 with Vinyan. There have been false starts on projects since then but du Welz is now in post on picture number three, a dark action-thriller titled simply Colt 45. Weapon supervisor and shooting instructor for National Police, Vincent Milès is an expert in combat shooting. He's only 25 and the elites from all around the globe are courting him. Against all odds, he refuses to join the prestigious field squads. His life takes a crucial turn when he meets Milo Cardena, a mysterious field agent, who drags him into an infernal swirl of violence. Vincent will soon find...

Korea Beat: Domino Records, 10 Million Club and the Dangers of Success

Posted: 10 May 2013 07:30 AM PDT

There's a lot of talk of emerging markets these days and while South Korea is experiencing a rise similar to those developing industries, the country has already been a beacon of commercial success in the region for quite some time. 2012 ended with a rewritten record book for the Korean box office as significant new benchmarks were set for overall tickets sold (194.9 million) and admissions for Korean films (114.6 million). The Thieves also became the most successful Korean feature of all time, ousting long-standing champ The Host, though this fact is debatable depending on whose figures you choose to follow. Now the first quarter of 2013 has passed and figures have come in showing an even greater rise in attendance and local market share....

Review: COMMUNITY S4E13, ADVANCED INTRODUCTION TO FINALITY (Or, Is It?)

Posted: 10 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT

It was in the season 3 episode Documentary Filmmaking: Redux that we saw a hilariously outdated video promoting Greendale Community College. In this video we saw a hopelessly hokey basketball player say "Why Go Greendale? Just because!" That episode, written by Megan Ganz who also penned last night's episode, was one of the wackiest and eccentric the show had put on to date with the Dean pulling a Francis Ford Coppola/Colonial Kurtz level tyrant-style meltdown when he wrangled the entire school into making a new promo video -- and this was in a season full of high-concept, hair brained risks. In looking back on that episode, I feel it worked because it embodied the kind of weirdly bold and passionate "why not?" attitude that a...
