Korean Box Office: SECRETLY GREATLY Not-so-Secret in Great Debut

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 09:00 PM PDT

The fortunes of the Korean film industry took a dramatic turn this weekend following the release of a major local film which set a slew of new records. Business was booming with almost 3 million admissions recorded over the frame, a significant jump over last year's 2.2 million and almost twice as much as last week. However, the better news was that the local market share lept to 77% (compared with 54% in 2012), following a spell when the domestic industry was having difficulty competing with Hollywood.  Title Release Date Market Share Weekend Total Screens 1 Secretly Greatly 13/06/05 68.90% 2,064,586 3,491,507 1341 2 Star Trek: Into Darkness (us) 13/05/30 11.30% 284,135 1,261,090 412 3 Horror Stories 2 13/06/05 5.60% 172,776 347,311 337 4 Furious...

The Epic Adventure Continues With The First Poster For THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 08:30 PM PDT

This breathtaking poster surely comes as a real treat for all the die-hard The Hobbit fans who are anxiously waiting for the arrival of the first trailer for Peter Jackson's The Desolation of Smaug - set to hit the web on Tuesday, June 11th. "I do believe the worst is behind us" said Bilbo Baggins in the last scene of The Unexpected Journey. He couldn't be more wrong. It seems the poster stands as a sort of prediction of the epic battle that's about to ensue, showing the titular character, played by Martin Freeman, looking at what appears to be the infamous Lonely Mountain, the lair of the mythical dragon Smaug. The sharp contrast between the figure and the mountain arising in the distance clearly intensifies the overall...

Kenneth Branagh Transforms Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE Into A Cinematic Experience

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Screening in select U.S. theaters on Sunday, June 9, and Tuesday, June 11, Kenneth Branagh's The Magic Flute transforms Mozart's opera into a true cinematic experience. Branagh is also scheduled to participate in a question-and-answer session after the screening on Sunday, live via webcast from London. Among other questions, he might be asked, "What took so long?" The film enjoyed a simultaneous world premiere at the Toronto and Venice film festivals in September 2006, timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. Subsequently it was released in multiple territories, including Canada and England, but not the U.S. Now Emerging Pictures, a company that specializes in delivering specialty films and "alternate content" (opera, ballet) to a network of participating theaters, has secured theatrical screenings,...

Oak Cliff 2013 Review: PUSSY RIOT: A PUNK PRAYER Takes A Brave Stand

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 07:00 AM PDT

On February 21st, 2012, a group of four women, clad in brightly-colored dresses and similarly brightly-colored balaclavas, took to the altar of Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow and attempted to perform a protest song challenging the collusion between church and state. They were quickly arrested and thrown in jail, but not before becoming a cause célèbre for anti-Putin/anti-establishment groups around the world. Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is a rare beast, a documentary about a seminal event that has the advantage of ridiculous amounts of "archival" footage from which to draw. This makes the film not only more comprehensive in its treatment of the material, but also blurs the line between the filmmakers and their subjects, leading the film to feel more like a tract...

Chapman To Has All The Answers In First Teaser For THE MIDAS TOUCH

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 06:40 AM PDT

Last year, Chapman To proved to be far and away the best thing about Heiward Mak's DIVA, a supposedly biting look at celebrity and the entertainment industry, that starred popstar Joey Yung in the title role, and To as her cutthroat manager. Something good does seem to have come out of that project however, as To's character has been spun off into his own movie, The Midas Touch. At the helm is Fung Chi Keung, who directed To in last year's admittedly rather lacklutre The Bounty, but his years of experience working with the likes of Stephen Chow and Johnnie To have earned him a second chance.Produced by Chan Hing Ka, whose previous producer credits include the rather good yet little-seen Chapman To flick La Comedie...

Sydney 2013 Review: COMRADE KIM GOES FLYING Doesn't Soar But Still Reaches Pretty High

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Co-directed by Nicholas Bonner (UK), Anja Daelemans (Belgium) and Kim Gwang-hun (North Korea), Comrade Kim Goes Flying is the first North Korean feature made with Western production partners in over 30 years. It was the first ever North Korean movie screened at the Sydney Film Festival, and also the first North Korean film that I have ever seen. Besides what is reported in the Western media, I really have little knowledge about this country, and so I jumped at the opportunity to check out this film. The story could not have been simpler. A young female coalminer Kim Yong-mi dreams of being an acrobat but fails an audition and gets humiliated by an experienced trapeze performer Pak Jang-phil, who said to her, "You think you...
