Review: SWITCH Proves A Mission Impossible For Andy Lau Posted: 11 Jun 2013 03:49 AM PDT Bombastic, sprawling yet largely incoherent, writer-producer-director Jay Sun's debut feature shoots for top-flight blockbuster status with its mix of glamorous stars, exotic locations and high-concept action set-pieces, but not even Andy Lau can save Switch from collapsing under the weight of its own misguided ambition.Taking its cues from internationally successful franchises like James Bond and Mission: Impossible, Jay Sun's Switch stars Andy Lau as Xiao Jinhan, aka secret agent "X", who is tasked with retrieving both parts of an ancient Chinese painting, Huang Gongwang's "Dwelling in the Fushun Mountains", when half of it is stolen from Taipei National Museum. The other half is on display at Hangzhou Museum in China, and X finds himself up against all manner of interested parties who are also vying... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Australia's biggest names in film and entertainment will add glitz and glamour to the red carpet as they celebrate the opening of the nation's most significant screen event before moving into the magnificent surrounds of Hamer Hall for the Opening Night screening.Probably more exciting than the film is the prestigious Hamer Hall venue... Check Out The First Production Video Of The Live Action KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT Filming is currently taking place at Japan's Shōdo Island for the upcoming live action adaptation of the novels on which Miyazaki's beloved animated film Kiki's Delivery Service was based. Following the release of on-set photos from the production, a new video showing footage of the on-set shoot and some short interviews is now available. As you can see, the shooting location is very picturesque, and it is also the first time we get to see the inside of the bakery where Kiki's character lives and works. The film has The Grudge director Shimizu Takashi at its helm, and stars young figure skater turned actress Koshiba Fuka as Kiki. Okudera Satoko (Summer Wars, Wolf Children) has written the script for the film, which is planned for release... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
SPOOK CENTRAL Threatens To Do For GHOSTBUSTERS What ROOM 237 Did For THE SHINING (Or Is It Just Taking The Piss?) Posted: 10 Jun 2013 11:30 PM PDT It is unclear at the moment whether or not Spook Central is a brilliant YouTube parody of Rodney Ascher's compulsively watchable Room 237 or a bonafide doc. I suspect the former -- the direct nods in text and structure certainly suggests so, and "Ivo Shandor" the mad architect, gozarian priest credited as director in a nice wink -- but remain hopeful for the latter. That the filmmakers can equate deep meaning and politics to Ghostbusters is both hilarious and brilliant. Is it a film about obesity? The politics of banning smoking? Women's control of their sexuality and bodies? Either way, it shows how compulsive people can be about the movies they love, even if they are not even close to the art house sphere. Watch it... Review: MAN OF STEEL, A Hero Flies With Brute Force Posted: 10 Jun 2013 09:00 PM PDT You will believe a blockbuster can fly. Man of Steel is a movie that earns its title the old-fashioned way -- by the brute force of its titular character, an alien whose physical strength is matched by his spiritual mettle and emotional discipline. Eight years ago, David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan collaborated on the screenplay for Batman Begins, redefining Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter ego for the 21st century, and their accomplishment here -- Goyer and Nolan are credited with the story, and Goyer with the screenplay, while Nolan serves as one of the producers -- is similar. This is a Man of Steel who exists in the same universe as the Dark Knight. Borrowing selected story beats from Richard Donner's Superman (1978)... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Indie Beat: Much Ado About Summer Movies (But Not Those Kind!) Posted: 10 Jun 2013 05:00 PM PDT My summer movie season started two weekends ago when I saw Before Midnight twice in two days, and continued in earnest this past Sunday with Carlos Reygadas beguiling Post Tenebras Lux (which, if you live in LA, and want something challenging, I urge you to see at Cinefamily before it leaves this Thursday). The next movie I really want to see is Man of Steel. Heck, I'm sure most of us really want to see Man of Steel. Now, of course I am going to sound like a broken record in saying this, but... there's a lot more out there than Man of Steel. Obviously. So today at Indie Beat, I'd like to highlight five independent films I find readily fascinating and that just may be... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
The Undead Stalk Malaysia In Woo Ming Jin's KL ZOMBI! Watch The First Teaser Now Posted: 10 Jun 2013 04:00 PM PDT Though Malaysia's Woo Ming Jin will likely always be best known internationally as the arthouse auteur responsible for The Tiger Factory and Woman On Fire Looks For Water, he has shown himself more than willing to also dip into populist genre fare back home in Malaysia. 2010 found footage effort Seru laid on copious amounts of blood and his next effort teams the director with popular local comedian Zizan Raja Lawak (KL Gangster, Kapoww!!) for horror comedy KL Zombi.Yep, the undead have arrived in Kuala Lumpur and while the very specific comedy style of Lawak will likely limit the export value of the film - comedy very seldom translates well between cultures - the first teaser for the film promises a good amount of undead... Thai Crime Goes Hard Boiled With INSPECTOR MAD DOG Posted: 10 Jun 2013 03:30 PM PDT Thai crime movies are going old school with upcoming release Inspector Mad Dog, a film that very clearly takes its cues more from the films of the early 80s than from anything more contemporary. It's all antiheroes and old film stock (or, at least the digital approximation thereof) here in the story of a cop on the edge in pursuit of a vicious criminal.Details beyond that are slim for the time being, beyond that the picture is being distributed - and presumably handled on the international market - by Sahamongkol Films and was produced by the hilariously named (to English speaking ears, at least) FukDuk Film. Check the trailer below.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
70s Rewind: SUPERMAN Made Me Believe Posted: 10 Jun 2013 03:00 PM PDT "You'll believe a man can fly." Belief was a big deal for movies and me in late 1977. Sure, Star Wars rebooted space opera, but that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was set in the present day and made alien contact look cool, but if you know how that movie ends, you know it was shrouded in secrecy. Somewhere around that time, I saw the teaser for Superman, and was not convinced it was for me. I read comic books as a kid; Spider-Man was my favorite, both for his jokes and for his alter-ego sharing a first name with me. Superman, though, and his many spin-offs -- Supergirl, Superboy, Superdog (?!) --... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Twitchvision: Talking THE PURGE, THE EAST and BEFORE MIDNIGHT Posted: 10 Jun 2013 01:30 PM PDT Another not so great week for mainstream releases, with The Purge and The East proving to be little more than misguided high-concept failures. Peruvian Horror: Trailer For Found Footage Film CEMENTERIO GENERAL Posted: 10 Jun 2013 01:00 PM PDT July 25th will mark a small milestone in Peruvian cinema with the release of Cementerio General, the first mainstream horror film ever made in this country. While there is an entire regional cinema movement which dabbles in scary movies based on local Peruvian folklore these movies never reach a mass audience and are worthy of an article all of their own.First-time director Dorian Fernandez-Moris has turned to recent horror cinema for inspiration, citing Cloverfield, the Paranormal Activity series, and Spanish outbreak film REC as influences. Cementerio thus joins the current fad for found-footage films, and will probably make some viewers dread being subjected to the nausea-inducing Handheld Shaky Cam Technique. However, when used correctly, it can be an effective tool to scare people out of... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

The BBC Offers DOCTOR WHO To ... Posted: 10 Jun 2013 09:45 AM PDT Ladies and gentlemen, meet Rory Kinnear. You may have noticed him playing Tanner in Skyfall and Quantum Of Solace and you'll soon see him with Chris O'Dowd and Nick Frost in Cuban Fury, but you're about to hear his name a whole lot more than you ever have before. Why? Because according to The Guardian, with Matt Smith about to vacate the part Kinnear has been offered the role of Doctor Who.Is this accurate? UK bookmakers certainly seem to think so as they've suspended all wagering on who the new Doctor may be and, if so, it's now entirely in Kinnear's court to decide whether he wants the part or not. So, for those hoping, no ... the new Doctor appears to be neither female,... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Review: GAME OF THRONES S3E10, MHYSA (Or, You Took An Extra Ten Minutes And This Was The Best You Could Do?) Posted: 10 Jun 2013 07:30 AM PDT Another season of George RR Martin's epic Game Of Thrones has come to an end and in this season's anticipation inducing, nail chewing, big shock cliffhanger ending ... nothing at all happens. Nothing. At. All. With the arguable exception of Gendry being released none of the major plotlines advance so much as an inch, beyond a trio of interesting character moments - Tywin sending Joffrey to his room, Arya killing Bolton's man, Ygritte peppering Jon Snow with arrows - we're treated to little more than a character montage show that stops just barely short of having characters wave to the camera and say see you next year, the messianic tint to Danaerys' brief appearance takes on a weirdly racist and pro-colonial overtone (look at those... Paris Cinema Festival 2013 Offers Wealth of Essential Cinema, New And Old Posted: 10 Jun 2013 07:30 AM PDT Every summer, from June 28 to July 9, Paris steps up its cinema game in a big way. This is no small thing in a city with probably more repertory and arthouse theaters per capita than anywhere in the world, so if you're going to be in the city during these dates (for vacation or for living), make sure to save some time for the Paris Cinema festival. This year includes premieres of almost every notable film from Cannes, including Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur, Claire Denis' The Bastards and The Palm D'or winner Blue is the Warmest Color. The international competition, on the other hand, highlights great films from around the world that have yet to play in France, including David Gordon Green's Prince... Character Posters for THE WORLD'S END Reveal Designated Pubs Posted: 10 Jun 2013 06:30 AM PDT Having lived in North London for nearly three years, I feel as though I've gotten to know the world of Edgar Wright a little better (also it helps to live near the house that served as exterior to Spaced and the corner shop from Shaun of the Dead). So I, like many, am pretty excited about the final installment in the Wright/Pegg/Frost Cornetto trilogy, The World's End. Posters have been released today of the six main characters, each with a name of one of the pubs on the crawl that the crew attempts during the apocalypse. Not surprisingly, the pub name is also a reference to the character, gleamed somewhat from the trailers. So Pegg's bad boy Gary is 'The Famous Cock', Rosamund Pike is... THE GRANDMASTER VFX Featurette Shows Ziyi Zhang Fighting With Style Posted: 10 Jun 2013 05:30 AM PDT Soon to be released in America, a new featurette for The Grandmaster dropped today, showing how the masters fight in snow with the help of VFX. While you won't see Tony Leung Chiu Wai here, Ziyi Zhang shines in this video.I'm a die-hard Wong Kar Wai fan. I went to see it in February with some Chinese friends. Though I was a bit disapointed with the movie, the beautiful snowy atmospherics generated strong emotions that still linger in my mind. Now, BUF, the VFX group behind the film, has launched this beautiful video was launched, showing how it was all created.
