Is Benicio Del Toro Playing Thanos In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? Posted: 03 Jun 2013 08:30 PM PDT In a Deadline piece, the Che and one-time Wolf Man is being described as a "lead character" in writer-director James Gunn's cosmic addition to the Marvel cinematic universe. The article goes on to say that Benicio Del Toro's character will be a part of future Marvel films. So is he playing Thanos? The increasingly well-cast Guardians has picked up its hero in Parks and Recreations actor Chris Pratt, who'll be playing team leader Peter Quill/Star-Lord (and the sole human on a team with alien warrior women, a talking raccoon, and a sentient tree). But at this point, it's been unclear who would be the villain(s), even as Marvel and Disney have been aggressively casting on that front. My initial thought was that Del Toro might... OVERHEARD 3 Promises to Be Biggest of Series Posted: 03 Jun 2013 07:55 PM PDT At a press conference in Hong Kong yesterday, Bona Film Group officially unveiled Overheard 3 - or Overh3ard - the latest installment in its successful series of thrillers, which have to-date blended elements of audio surveillance with the financial world. But while all the major players are set to return, some elements of the franchise are going to change.Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu all return for the third film - again playing different characters than in previous outings - but the action will move away from its earlier focus on the stock market. Koo suggested that his character will have some kind of physical disability, while Daniel Wu, on the same day that he announced the birth of his daughter, Raven, joked... The film continues on the festival circuit this summer before getting a U.S. release on August 23rd, courtesy of the folks at Cinedigm. Today we have a trailer for the film.Short Term 12 focuses on, and gets it title from, a foster care facility and its twenty-something staff led by Brie Larson (Greenberg, 21 Jump Street). I've seen the film (expect to hear more from me on it soon) so was quite happy to see a trailer for this one. Though I will say it plays up the emotions in a very sensationalistic... We have yet to see it's impact after its first weekend. So, if you are in the area, don't miss this gruesome and disturbing film about a former torturer facing his past during the Pinochet dictatorship. Disclaimer: no dogs were harmed in the making of this film. Alicia Scherson's third film will be hitting the screens the 6th of June. Who Should Be The New DOCTOR WHO? Posted: 03 Jun 2013 11:00 AM PDT So, it became official over the weekend that Matt Smith's tenure as the 11th Doctor Who is coming to an end following the upcoming Christmas special and 50th Anniversary show. Which, of course, raises the obvious question of "Who's next?"The obvious answer, of course, is that we've already been introduced to the next Doctor and that it's John Hurt. Which would be pretty damn spectacular, frankly, and would also imply some sort of tangling of the timeline given that the eleventh Doctor was already clearly aware of who - or what - exactly Hurt was. It would also imply a much darker turn for the character so let's assume that the BBC isn't going to want to mess with their biggest cash cow to quite... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
New International KICK-ASS 2 Trailer Is The Best Yet Posted: 03 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT Hey, there it is. It took a couple tries but after a lackluster trailer or two, a second international trailer has arrived on the scene - one that would very definitely be a red-bander if prepared for the US market - for Kick-Ass 2 and this one delivers the goods. Loads of new footage here that balances out the characters nicely - Aaron Johnston, Chloe Moretz, Jim Carrey and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all get some very good moments - while also getting deeper into the story of the film. Suddenly this feels like one worth being excited for again.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
THE REBEL Director Hitting The Road With Buddy Comedy YOUNG TEO Posted: 03 Jun 2013 09:30 AM PDT The Nguyen Brothers are getting back together, writer-director Charlie and star Johnny teaming up for what is being billed as Vietnam's first ever road comedy, Young Teo. The Nguyen Brothers, of course, are best known for their first team up on martial arts film The Rebel while more recent action effort Bui Doi Cho Lon has made headlines for its difficulties in clearing censorship in their native Vietnam. But Charlie is a director known for his diversity and he's going for the laughs with his next effort, a film that will star Thai Hoa as a country boy on a bus trip between Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) to Sa Dec with Johnny Nguyen playing his unwilling travel partner. Watch for more as we... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Korean Box Office: STAR TREK Leads Hollywood Onslaught Posted: 03 Jun 2013 09:00 AM PDT Local fare continues to be overwhelmed at the Korean box office as it scored a meagre 17% market share compared with a much healthier 54% last year. What's more, despite a number of blockbusters on offer, business was also down with only 1.69 million tickets sold overall, down from 2012's 2.04 million during the same weekend. After a record-breaking 1st quarter, business for Korean films has slowed down considerably in the past few months. Though this is traditionally a period of Hollywood dominance, Korea's weak performance is a little surprising. Fatigue due to an underwhelming Spring slate is likely the key factor. Though this slump may continue through June, business should come soaring back this July when a number of hotly anticipated tentpoles (Mr. Go 3D,... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Twitchvision: Talking AFTER EARTH, NOW YOU SEE ME, and More! Posted: 03 Jun 2013 08:30 AM PDT You may already have joined in the massive conversation about the film (at least by Twitch standards), but here's a nice, digestible version of my view on the abysmal After Earth.A not so good week for me, really ended up disliking Now You See Me stank it up as well, but at least that had a pretty decent premise and a good chunk that was worth watching before it fell apart. We rant out of time, but instead I extoll you to check out three films in theatres now I adore - Kim-Ki Duk's wonderful Pieta, Ben Weatley's twisted travelling tale Sightseers, and Linklatter's astonishingly and moving continuation of his grand experiment, Before Midnight.Video embedded below... Review: GAME OF THRONES S3E09, THE RAINS OF CASTAMERE (Or, With The Season Coming To A Close It's Time For Things To Get Stabby) Posted: 03 Jun 2013 07:50 AM PDT It would be tempting to call this penultimate episode of Game Of Thrones series three a game changer if not for the fact that the game had clearly changed quite some time ago. The moment Robb Stark lost Jaime Lannister he exited the game. He lost his leverage. Tywin left the field of battle and was free to play the waiting game secure in the fact that he had more men and more money and one of those two factors would eventually win out. Turns out it was the money. No, the events of The Rains Of Castamere don't really change the game so much as they put a brutal, bloody exclamation point on to the fact that robbed of the one asset that may... Blu-ray Review: BLANCANIEVES, An Enchanting Spanish Limited Edition Posted: 03 Jun 2013 05:00 AM PDT ("Special Editions" like these make the collector in me live happily, ever after...) Cinematically, 2012 was pretty busy for Snow White: no less than four film versions of her story were released last year. From the USA we had Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, from France we got Miroir Mon Amour, and from Spain we got Blancanieves. Out of all these, it was the Spanish film which got the highest critical and audience acclaim. When it played at the International Film Festival Rotterdam it nearly won the Audience Award, with a whopping high rating of 4.6 out of 5. It didn't get my score at that festival, because I somehow totally managed to miss the film. I intended to see it,... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
