New Poster For THE WIND RISES Offers First Close-up Look At Its Main Character Posted: 06 Jun 2013 03:00 AM PDT As anime fans around the world start counting down to July 20, the date of the release of Miyazaki Hayao's new film The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) in Japan, Studio Ghibli is busy releasing teaser posters to whet our appetite. Another new poster has just been released, and I personally find it particularly exciting, not only because it looks incredibly pretty, but it is also the first time we get to have a close-up look at the film's main character, Horikoshi Jiro, who was the designer of the Zero Fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. Check out a bigger version of the poster by clicking the image below.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Sundance's TWO MOTHERS Becomes ADORATION, Because 'A' Titles Are More Visible In VOD Menus Posted: 06 Jun 2013 02:30 AM PDT Sundance 2013 adult drama Two Mothers (as it was titled then) has had an identity crisis since it was first announced as The Grandmothers before filming began. The Grandmothers is the title of the Doris Lessing novel the film is based on, but for a story about two 40-something best friends who fall in love with each others sons in what has been described as a sexy, thoughtful film, such a title was always going to change. Before its world premiere at Sundance that change was announced as Two Mothers. and since that premiere the film has been known as Mothers (at least in Australia, according to Picha) and Perfect Mothers (for its French distributor). In May, US distributor Exclusive Releasing announced the title as Adore for its... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
SoundKilda 2013 Awards: Darcy and Shanks Take Everything Posted: 06 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT It's nice to back a winner, and it's even nicer to back two. Last week at the SoundKilda music video competition as part of the 2013 St Kilda Film Festival, directors Darcy Prendergast and Michael Shanks -- whom Twitch has written volumes about in the last six months -- dominated the awards, taking out the four categories between them and leaving the other 15 or so directors in their wake. For the second year running, Shanks took out Best Independent Music Video for his Roadgeek clip Towards the Sun (covered here), while Darcy took out the other three categories -- his music video for Gotye's Easy Way Out (featured on Twitch here) winning Best Music Video, Best Music Video Animation and the Audience Award, as voted by... Sydney 2013 Review: THE LAND OF HOPE Is One Of Sono Sion's Best Posted: 05 Jun 2013 06:00 PM PDT Breathtaking is perhaps the best word to describe Love Exposure director Sono Sion's latest, The Land Of Hope. It is a film that takes audiences on a long and draining but ultimately very rewarding journey, with two families torn apart after a massive earthquake in rural Japan causes the local nuclear plant to explode. It is clear that the intimate story, written by Sono himself, has been inspired by real life events. The story takes place in the fictional prefecture of Nagashima (which is a combination of 'Nagasaki' and 'Hiroshima'), described in the film as 'home of the famous nuclear plant'. The Onos and the Suzukis are local farmers whose lives are changed forever when disaster forces the evacuation of residents who live within the 20km... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Slamdance Comes Home: Fest Partners With Cinedigm To Bring Winners And Faves To VOD Posted: 05 Jun 2013 03:30 PM PDT If you regularly catch my reviews and articles here at Twitch than you know I totally dig the Slamdance Film Festival, that beautiful anarchic step child of Park City who shines a considerable spotlight on first-time filmmakers with flicks made for under a million bucks. Some of my absolute favorite films from the last few years (Without, The Sound Of Small Things, Fynbos) have premiered at the festival. These have proven to be among some of the freshest, most fascinating and exciting indie voices to emerge from across the globe. So it's safe to say that the folks at Slamdance have their hand firmly on the pulse of what's new and different in cinema. It makes me doubly pleased then to share the news that... Dare To Watch The Trailer For INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 Posted: 05 Jun 2013 03:00 PM PDT Aww, I wanted to use the roman numeral "II" but that made it look like we were talking about Insidious going Chapter Eleven. Anyway, a sequel to James Wan's Insidious is indeed in the making and here is a trailer for it. We had quite a few fans for the first one on our team, and director Wan returns for the sequel, so... who knows? The story is as follows, according to the pressmap: The famed horror team of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunite with the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins in Insidious: Chapter 2, a terrifying sequel to the acclaimed horror film, which follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to... Patrick Stewart Returns To The Big Screen In The Trailer For HUNTING ELEPHANTS Posted: 05 Jun 2013 01:30 PM PDT You might have noticed that it's been a very long while since we've seen Patrick Stewart's presence on the big screen. It's been several years in fact, during which his voice did most of the acting, from video games and animated movies to everything by Seth MacFarlane. But now it seems that his actual face will accompany his voice, in a new Israeli film of all places.Sir Patrick will play an eccentric Brit in the upcoming crime comedy Hunting Elephants who joins a group Israeli misfits in a bank heist. Its the third feature comedy by writer-director Reshef Levi and stars some of Israel's own acting nobility, including Moni Moshonov (Late Marriage), Sasson Gabai (The Band's Visit) and Moshe Ivgy (Campfire).Jonathan is a boy genius... Paul Schrader Joins The Venice Film Festival Posted: 05 Jun 2013 01:00 PM PDT American auteur Paul Schrader will be back at the Venice Film Festival (28 August - September 7) as Head of Jury of the sidebar section Orizzonti. The movie brat guru, director of critical hits such as American Gigolo and loyal writer of Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The last temptation of Christ), will also present his latest work The Canyons, written by controversial novelist Bret Easton Ellis and starring Lindsay Lohan and James Deen, an erotic thriller focusing on glamour and sex that will surely delight the Lido cinephiles. Schrader is the third name announced for the renowned international festival after Bernardo Bertolucci as Jury President for the official section and Kim Ki-duk, who will present his new film Moebius in competition.... More Disembodied, Context-Free Action & Violence In New SINGAM 2 Teaser Posted: 05 Jun 2013 12:30 PM PDT It's unfair to pre-judge a film based on a 42 second teaser, right? Well, I'm trying my damnedest, but the first couple of teasers from Suriya's Singam 2 are not yet inspiring confidence. This latest bit of footage introduces a new villain character played by Danny Sapani (Trance, Mercenaries), though who or what he is isn't terribly clear. There's a lot of chasing, very little actual fighting, and some yelling. That's about. It's no secret that I'm a Suriya fan, but that has largely to do with the man's screen presence and charisma and less to do with his last few films, unfortunately. Singam 2 has some big shoes to fill, and I'll be there in the cinema on day one, but my expectations continue to... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Take a First Look at FONOTUNE - AN ELECTRIC FAIRYTALE Posted: 05 Jun 2013 12:00 PM PDT The creative forces behind the hit short film Yellow and documentary Visiting Uwe have joined together for a new sci-fi road movie, Fonotune - An Electric Fairytale. Directed by Fabian Huebner, who previously helmed the documentary about controversial filmmaker Uwe Boll, Visiting Uwe, Fonotune stars Japanese actress Yamashita Yuho and Watanabe Kazushi, star of Miike Takashi's classic Visitor Q. There is also an appearance from the superb Japanese punk band, Electric Eel Shock (who I've seen play live and are utterly insane).Shot on location in Japan and, among other places, the salt flats of Utah, the first teaser for the film has just been released, and frankly it looks pretty gorgeous. As well it should, the cinematography is from Jon Britt, who was responsible for the startling look... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Have Your Say: Was The Red Wedding The Most Shocking Fiction Moment Ever On Television? Posted: 05 Jun 2013 11:30 AM PDT As a longtime reader of George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire books, an adaptation of which is currently being broadcast as Game Of Thrones, last Monday was one of the most satisfying moments I've ever encountered since I started using social media. At first I was highly sceptical about the whole adaptation of this series, until I actually started watching it. And while the television series is no match for the complexity and depth in the books, it does get the mood and about 95% of its casting right. A far better accomplishment than the recent Tolkien adaptations, I dare to argue. But the very reason that I started watching it at all, was that I heard rumors that the ruthless plot of... ONLY GOD FORGIVES Sparks French Film Ratings Controversy, PAINLESS Director Sheds Light On The Bigger Picture Posted: 05 Jun 2013 11:00 AM PDT Alright parents, show of hands. How many of you plan to take your twelve-year-old to see Nicolas Winding Refn's new ultra-violent film Only God Forgives, which includes a lengthy torture scene, as well as lovingly filmed shootings, amputations and beatings galore? Okay, actually, we aren't all in a room together where I can see the raised hands (likely belonging a few people bidding for the cool-parent-of-the-year title), so I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that most would prefer to keep the kids at home for this one, if only to avoid having to explain to your adolescent what exactly Kristen Scott Thomas meant by the expression "cum dumpster."Well, according to the French film rating system, as long as you're twelve or... Watch The Astounding Trailer For Hybrid-Animation Documentary ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE Posted: 05 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT Though you may not know his name Ryszard Kapuscinski is a hero to thousands and an icon amongst the journalistic community. A Polish journalist covering independence movements and revolutions throughout Africa through the 1970s, making his living by walking into some of the most dangerous places on earth and painting a portrait for the world outside of Africa of nations struggling for self determination. He expected his time in Angola to be more of the same but Kapuscinski was wrong, his experiences there defining him for life and driving him to cross the line between journalist and participant. And now Kapuscinski's experiences in Angola are coming to the big screen thanks to an adaptation of his autobiographical Another Day Of Life coming from directors Raul de... First Shot Of Evangeline Lilly As Tauriel In THE HOBBIT Posted: 05 Jun 2013 09:30 AM PDT Poor Evangeline Lilly, people are going to hate her pretty much no matter what. When Peter Jackson's Hobbit Boogaloo hits screens later this year it'll be Lilly who, through no fault of her own, will almost certainly be the lightning rod for criticisms from the most ardently loyal fans due to the simple fact that her character - a Sylvan elf named Tauriel - appears absolutely nowhere in any of Tolkein's work. So she's the one that'll be evaluated and judged and generally be used as the focal point of any criticism of the extreme bloat that drove Jackson's adaptation of Tolkein's rather slender novel to three films and a near nine hour run time.Hint: You should be blaming Jackson. All of this to say that... Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Talk THIS IS THE END Posted: 05 Jun 2013 09:00 AM PDT I sat down last week as part of a round table discussion with directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, discussing what I hope will be one of the great film successes of the summer. This is the End is one of the funniest, smartest films I've seen in some time, a beautiful collision of slacker comedy mixed with insightful skewering of a celebrity-obsessed culture. When TMZ, Twitter and other 24/7 celebrity coverage makes us believe we know these actors like they are our friends, or that we know them intimately from the characters that they play, it's easy to fall prey to making broad assumptions about the people behind the mask. That said, Seth Rogen in particular is pretty darned Rogen-y in person -... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Luc Besson Has Never Been Funny. That Doesn't Stop Him From Trying With THE FAMILY. Posted: 05 Jun 2013 08:35 AM PDT There are many things that French director Luc Besson can claim to be. Funny is not one of them. This may, in part, explain why he thought it a wise idea to cast the also remarkably unfunny Robert DeNiro as the lead in his action-comedy The Family (formerly known as Malavita). Based on the trailer, the end result is about as you would expect.A mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni, his wife Maggie and their children Belle and Warren can't help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems... Review: Michel Gondry's MOOD INDIGO Exhilarates, Exhausts Posted: 05 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT Michel Gondry is back. And he's going no holds barred. After slumming it as studio hired-gun and inner-city auteur (in 2011's The Green Hornet and 2012's The We and the I, respectively), the French director is back in small-batch surrealist mode with Mood Indigo (L'ecume des jours). The cult of Gondry can breathe a sigh of relief: with all its artisanal whimsy and handcrafted pizazz, this isn't just the movie you've been waiting for - it's three of them. Now, if only Gondry had managed to make them add up to anything meaningful or affecting. I could offer some token plot summary here, but believe me when I say that it really, really doesn't matter. Adapting the 1947 Boris Vian novel L'ecume des jours, a linguistically playful romance that's about as universally... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Destroy All Monsters: Leave M. Night Alone Posted: 05 Jun 2013 07:00 AM PDT Something entertaining happened on Thursday as the reviews of After Earth began to hit. Right here on our site, Jason Gorber's review (very negative, read it here) was lambasted all day long by the commenting community - deemed "unprofessional," "fannish," (and, to be fair, also the "best. review. ever."). Meanwhile, over on HitFix, Drew McWeeny's review (generally favourable, while still containing an impassioned plea for the reassertion of a "middle" in critical thought) was torn apart in the comments for the opposite reason, with Mr. McWeeny accused of being in the pockets of the studios for daring to give an okay pass to an M. Night Shyamalan film. Now, of course, "the internet" is not a homogenous blob or hive mind, singularly intent on doing... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
DRONE Trailer Explores The Psychological Impact Of Armchair Killing Posted: 05 Jun 2013 06:30 AM PDT Remote warfare is a terrifying proposition. With death-dealing taking place at the press of a button in rooms far removed from the killing field it's no wonder filmmakers are starting to examine what happens when the human psyche is put under the pressure of these decisions. We've seen drone warfare examined as part of many movies about espionage and the war on terror (Syriana springs to mind as a chilling example) but few movies focusing solely on this. One movie that aims to do just this is Edwin McGill's Drone, an upcoming Australian indie posing as an American-set movie starring Peter Phelps (above left) and Guy Edmonds.Drone is the story of Dalton (Edmonds), an 'armchair warrior' - a drone plane operator with the U.S. Army. Watch The Increasingly Angry Morgan Brothers Tell You To Buy Australian Posted: 05 Jun 2013 05:00 AM PDT I'm loving this 100 Bloody Acres secondary marketing campaign. Directing brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes have applied their considerable talents to putting together a series of fake ads that brilliantly parody the terrible Australian TV ads made by well-meaning but under financed amateurs. Some very real examples are the Souvlaki Hut Gorilla and Wombat Gully. The Cairnes brothers ads are for another sibling duo, Reg and Lindsay Morgan, of Morgan's Organic - the characters at the centre of their horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres.
