Review: THE LADY ASSASSIN 3D Proves Looks Can Kill Posted: 28 Jun 2013 04:00 AM PDT A rare export from Vietnam, The Lady Assassin is a classic martial arts romp in the old Shaw Brothers vein. Employing a simple plot and serviceable martial arts, Nguyen Quang Dung's romantic fantasy is buoyed up by an eye-popping cast of gorgeous performers. It is a rare treat when a film from Vietnam breaks free of its domestic shackles and heads out into international waters. Earlier this month we heard that the eagerly anticipated Cho Lon from Twitch favourite Johnny Nguyen had failed to pass the local censorship board, and as a result was forbidden from being screened either on home turf or overseas. No such problems for Nguyen Quang Dung's The Lady Assassin (aka My Nhan Ke), however, which broke box office records when... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
The Asian Film Festival of Dallas Unveils First Titles: IP MAN: THE FINAL FIGHT, TOKYO STORY, CHITTAGONG, & More Posted: 27 Jun 2013 09:30 PM PDT Just a few days ago the 11th annual edition of the Asian Film Festival of Dallas announced its first titles to the world. I'm a little bit behind in getting the announcement, but hopefully my enthusiasm will be infectious enough to make up for it. This is the festival that introduced me to the film festival experience and is like my home. I can't wait to check out the films this year and share as much as I can with our readers. Among the first titles are several Southwest premieres. Those films include a pair of Berserk features, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I & II, as well as Hindi dramatic feature Chittagong, which we covered from the NYIFF in 2012, and Herman Yau's Ip... Plot Details Emerge As THE ROVER Secures US Distribution Posted: 27 Jun 2013 06:30 PM PDT In an display of secrecy that would impress JJ Abrams, an impressively scant amount of information managed to escape the Australian shoot for David Michôd's The Rover. And the ensuing months haven't revealed much more. We've known it is a dystopian Western set in the near future, that Guy Pearce plays a lone wolf chasing a gang of thieves that stole his car and that Rob Pattinson comes along for the ride. And that's about it.Now comes some more plot detail, courtesy of the announcement that fast-rising distributor A24 (The Bling Ring, The Spectacular Now) has picked up the film for US release. THE ROVER is set in a world ten years following the collapse of the western economic system, where Australia's mineral resources have drawn... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Old Guys Can't Hardly Run Fast But Sly And Arnie Have An ESCAPE PLAN Posted: 27 Jun 2013 05:30 PM PDT Sylvester Stallone is an escape artist genius paid large sums of money to break out of prisons and expose their weaknesses for future refinement. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an old guy stuck in an escape proof jail. Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson appears to be some sort of techno whiz. And now you know everything you need to know about the Mikael Hafstrom directed geriatric action film Escape Plan (previously known as The Tomb). It goes how you'd expect from the presence of those three, the presence of Sam Neill and Jim Caviezel in the cast seemingly cancelled out by Vinnie Jones and a clearly slumming it Vincent D'Onofrio. The first trailer has arrived and lurks below for viewing pleasure or horror, depending on your perspective.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
FIDOCS 2013 Review: LA MAISON DE LA RADIO Is Audiovisual Fun Posted: 27 Jun 2013 01:01 PM PDT After the speeches were done and the Festival of Documentary of Santiago (FIDOCS) in Chile was officially launched, it was time for the opening film to play in front of directors, participants and press alike. The film was one that played at the Berlinale this year and is now having a theatrical run in French theaters, and as this is one of the most important Chilean festivals of the year, they always choose a film from one of the modern masters of the non-fiction filmmaking genre. This time it was the turn for the French master Nicolas Philibert (To Be and to Have, Nénnette), whose latest film takes a naturalistic and at the same time fun look at one of the most important media conglomerates... Review: THE HEAT Is the Buddy-Cop Comedy We've Been Waiting For Posted: 27 Jun 2013 12:01 PM PDT Nothing will sink a buddy comedy faster than poor chemistry between the leads, which can seem unfair if the script is good. But the opposite is also true: a pair of actors with real comic energy, who complement one another and work fluidly as a team, can turn a so-so script into a boisterous fireball of mirth. It's that second thing, the boisterous-fireball-of-mirth thing, that The Heat turns out to be. The fact that it never deviates from the standard "mismatched cops solve a case" plot formula is almost irrelevant in the face of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy using their different but compatible comedy skills to razz each other, bust their bosses' chops, bring down a drug lord, and become BFFs. They embody "girl... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Review: I'M SO EXCITED! Sends Mile High Club Membership Soaring Posted: 27 Jun 2013 11:01 AM PDT It's a bit of a shame that the U.S. release of Pedro Almodóvar's latest, called Los Amantes Pasajeros in Spanish, is titled I'm So Excited!, and that it will presumably use the moment where the flight attendants break into a raucous rendition of the Pointer Sisters hit as a key marketing point. Not that I blame them -- the song-and-dance is the film's high point, and easily its most unhinged and memorable scene -- but in a movie with few other surprises, the whole could have benefited greatly from such a burst of energy coming out of nowhere. Not to say the rest of the film, a slight, stylish sit-com-melodrama at 35,000 feet, is bad. It's agreeable, breezy and often quite funny, but those hoping... Fresh Shots Of Crowe, Hopkins, Winstone And Watson In Aronofsky's NOAH Posted: 27 Jun 2013 10:30 AM PDT Due for release in March of 2014, a handful of new character images have arrived from Darren Aronofsky's dark fantasy retelling of the story of Noah. This was never likely to be the version of the story anyone grew up with - a fact that has become increasingly obvious with talk of six armed angels standing eleven feet tall - and these new images seem to confirm that while giving a good look at the design aesthetic of the piece. All the major players are here, so take a look at the gallery below to see who's doing what.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: WHITE HOUSE DOWN Lacks Colour, Depth Posted: 27 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT Way back several weeks ago, somewhere near the Ides of March, a magical little film was released about a bunch of terrorists taking over the White House. It was big, brash, bold and sometimes quite preposterous, but there wasn't a frame out of place, a cliché not mined to its fullest extent, nor an explosion held back. Olympus Has Fallen proved to be both visceral and kind of magnificent in its own way, living up supremely to the films that it borrowed heavily from.Several of those definitive blow-stuff-up-real-good movies have been directed by Roland Emmerich. After all, the very notion of the complete obliteration of the White House is kind of his schtick, after Independence Day made that the core image of that film's release.... Review: BYZANTIUM, Modern Vampires Stuck Between Worlds Posted: 27 Jun 2013 09:01 AM PDT Two sisters try to lay low in Dublin while being pursued by long-coated inspectors. Having committed a rather kinetic and conspicuous murder in the opening sequence of the film, the Webb sisters are actually a pair of highland blood suckers, a 200-year-old mother and daughter pair of vampires. Possibly the last of their kind, moving from town to town and still working out some serious parent-child issues (not the least of which is their approach to handling their prey), Gemma Arterton literally vamps it up, putting on a prostitute pose to seduce low-lifes and cops, while her daughter plays more school girl, a more subtle and melancholic performance by Saoirse Ronan. The opposing disposition of these ladies -- and the secrets they keep -- are... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
The FIST OF JESUS Strikes Again! Posted: 27 Jun 2013 08:30 AM PDT It was back in February that we first brought you Spanish cult short film Fist Of Jesus, a slightly different and very, very bloody take on the life of the Messiah. Created by filmmakers David Munoz and Adrian Cardona as a sort of proof of concept for their proposed feature Once Upon A Time In Jerusalem it's just a hilariously irreverent, incredibly well executed bit of work. But before they made that proof of concept they first made a proof of concept to demonstrate that they could make the proof of concept. You follow what I'm saying? Yes, there's more Fist Of Jesus, specifically a short prequel sequence in which Jesus and Judas travel to heal the blind beggar Bartimaeus. It doesn't go so well.Recently... Review: A BAND CALLED DEATH Chronicles Family, Faith, And An Artistic Vision Posted: 27 Jun 2013 08:01 AM PDT In the early 1970s, three teenage African American brothers, David, Bobby, and Dannis Hackney, formed a band called Death and played "hard-drivin' rock & roll" -- really, a precursor to punk rock, pre-dating pioneering black punk band Bad Brains by about five years -- across their hometown of Detroit. They didn't get far; their only single rarely got airplay and the unreleased master tapes for their debut album sat unheard in a dusty attic in Detroit for nearly 35 years. A Band Called Death, directed by Mark Covino and Jeff Howlett, chronicles the Hackney brothers' story, from their early years playing instruments purchased with a family insurance settlement in a cramped room in their parents' house to the band's rediscovery and eventual revival several decades... Opening In Mexico: SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN And LEVIATHAN, Two Must-See Documentaries Posted: 27 Jun 2013 07:00 AM PDT Two of the best films I have seen this year, Searching for Sugar Man and Leviathan, will finally begin their theatrical run in Mexico on Friday, June 28. It's summer, so these documentaries will have to compete against some of the strongest cards of Hollywood, especially World War Z and The Hangover Part III (opening here the same day). The Oscar-winning Searching for Sugar Man has become a favorite of audiences and critics alike. I'm just one of the many who watched it, loved it and kept listening to Sixto Rodriguez's music. Yes, this documentary will make you discover a one-of-a-kind American artist and a greatly inspiring story dealing with two of his many South African fans. John Jarzemsky reviewed it for Twitch at SXSW... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Here's A Fresh Look At The Animated Adaptation Of Jack London's WHITE FANG Posted: 27 Jun 2013 06:02 AM PDT Like most animation purists, I have been pretty bummed out over the decline of traditional hand-drawn style feature films this last decade. In 2009, a glimmer of hope entered my radar with the discovery of the teaser for White Fang, a French animated adaptation of Jack London's classic novel of the same name. The quality of the visuals brought back for me fond memories of the glory years at Disney. However, my hopes were crushed when I soon learned that the studio producing the film had been closed down. Fortunately, the project is still alive and we now have a poster and the first image via the new production company Superprod. Dominique Monfery, a former supervising animator at Disney and the director of Eleanor's Secret,... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
