Watch The Bloody Trailer For Previously-Blocked Vietnamese Action Film THE RACE

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 02:00 AM PDT

If you read about the case of Cho Lon, you'll know The Race. It's another violent film that was initially blocked and was asked to edit some scenes like Cho Lon was, but it wasn't banned. The crew of The Race quietly edited in the shadows, gently following orders from the Censorship Board until they were granted a release date. Today the official trailer for The Race was released, which shows how violent it is. Damn, I did not see that coming. This is Nguyen Khac Huy's directorial debut, and I think this guy is pretty promising. The Race describes the breathtaking journey of the protagonist named Loc (Pham Anh Khoa), a former track athlete, now become a truck driver. He was pushed into a deadly race to save the lives of his...

Kim Ki-duk's Banned MOEBIUS To Be Re-Evaluated by Korea Media Ratings Board

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 01:45 AM PDT

Never one to shy away from controversy, Kim Ki-duk's latest film Moebius was effectively banned last week for featuring 'harmful content'. The move by the Korea Media Ratings Board (KMRB) has been controversial, particularly as Kim was the local industry's favored son last year following a historic win of Venice's Golden Lion prize for his film Pieta. Now it has come to light that Kim and his producer Kim Soon-mo have re-submitted the film to the KMRB, hoping for a classification that will allow mature audiences to view it at their own discretion. In a letter sent to the KMRB, Kim stated that the mother-son incest element of the film (which he believes is the cause of the agency's restrictive ruling) is a necessary element to...

Sullivan Stapleton Broods On First Poster For 300 Sequel RISE OF AN EMPIRE

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Life's been good to Sullivan Stapleton. A few years ago he was taking odd jobs crewing on films and TV to pay the bills, now he probably has some kind of venerable butler who pays his bills for him. His change in circumstances can be traced back to Animal Kingdom, the crime film that basically launched him into the US, along with Jacki Weaver, Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, James Frecheville and of course its director David Michôd. Since Animal Kingdom took off in 2010, Stapleton has gone on to star in action TV series Strike Back and also had a bit in Gangster Squad. However it was to be 300: Rise of an Empire where he was truly expected to come into his own. Now we...

Swedish Supernatural Drama MARIANNE On UK VOD This Friday!

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 01:00 AM PDT

One of our favorite little indie films to emerge from the festival circuit recently was Filip Tegstedt's supernatural laced family drama Marianne. And though things have been in limbo since its festival run, the film is finally starting to pop up on VOD platforms. Starting this week in the UK on June 14th the film will be playing in Hi Def over at The Horror Show. The life of Krister has become an unending nightmare, ever since his wife's death. His mental health is deteriorating, not least because he is plagued by night terrors, his fitful slumber intruded upon by a mysterious woman with dark designs on him. He initially believes these visions are a symptom of serious post-traumatic shock. Krister does, after all, have a...

Jackie Chan Planning Stage Musical About His Life!

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 12:30 AM PDT

As I write this I am less than 24 hours away from seeing this international action star introduce one of his finest martial films, Legend of Drunken Master, here in Toronto on Wednesday night. As a primer I've discovered that Jackie Chan is planning a stage musical adaptation of his biography I Am Jackie Chan: My Life In Action. Chan said the musical will be told through his voice as narrator of his life, focusing on his early youth, his time spent performing acrobatics with the children's performance group the Seven Little Fortunes and his quest to step out from behind the shadow of the iconic Bruce Lee.If you follow the Chinese entertainment industry long enough you know that a lot of the time the music and film industries...

Spoilery New Clip From Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto's SAFE HAVEN Segment From V/H/S/2

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 03:33 PM PDT

Over here in Australia we're going to have to wait a little longer for Roadshow to release V/H/S/2 but across the Pacific in the US audiences are able to watch it right now dammit! Directed by Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans and Jason Eisener, from all reports (including our own review right here) V/H/S/2 is a bigger, scarier, more badass sequel.Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static--white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than...

A BOY AND HIS DOG Returns To A Drive-In Near You As Part Of The B Movie Road Tour

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Got a hankering to take in some post apocalyptic puppy love in the environment it was initially created for? Well, you can, with LQ Jones' A Boy And His Dog featuring prominently in The B Movie Road Tour - a traveling festival of cult films hitting drive in theaters around the USA.The 1950s and 1960s, drive-ins began to spread like wildfire, increasing to more than 4,000 locations. The new sites may have begun as a venue to watch films, but interestingly, the main films that were shown were mostly considered to be B films. Patrons enjoyed them regardless and remained enthralled with what they saw - so much so that the drive-in became a part of American culture where people came together to socialize with...

Deadly Epidemic Sweeps Korea In THE FLU Teaser

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 01:30 PM PDT

The proverbial shit will hit the fan this summer in the medical thriller disaster The Flu from Kim Sung-soo, the director of Musa the Warrior.  Jang Hyuk and Su Ae as part of the relief effort must prevent any more infected dead bodies from piling up and already, the amount of fatalities shown in the teaser trailer is staggering. The worst epidemic ever seen is sweeping through Bundang, the suburb of Seoul. After smuggling illegal immigrants into the country, Byung-woo dies from an unknown virus. Soon after that, the same symptoms are plaguing scores of residents in Bundang. People are helpless against the airborne disease and the number of infected increases quickly, spreading chaos. As the worst-case scenario precaution, the city of half a million people,...

Wenders, Redford, Glawogger And More Join For 3D Documentary Project CATHEDRALS OF CULTURE

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 01:00 PM PDT

While 3D technology has largely been used by Hollywood in the service of banging and crashing and blowing things up films such as Pina and Cave Of Forgotten Dreams have demonstrated that the technology has far more wide ranging uses than just that. In the right hands and directed towards the right subjects 3D can be used to share location and experience, to place the audience in a place rather than simply having them look at it. And that is precisely the point of upcoming documentary series Cathedrals Of Culture.A six part project with installments to be directed by Robert Redford, Wim Wenders, Michael Glawogger, James Marsh (no, not that James Marsh), Karim Ainouz and Michael Madsen (no, not that Michael Madsen) the series will...

XLrator Media Picks Up Fantastic Fest Hit THE CONSPIRACY For Late Summer 2013 Release

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:45 PM PDT

Ever since its premiere at Fantastic Fest last year The Conspiracy has been pretty close to the top of my must-see list. The is-or-isn't it real assembled footage story of two documentary filmmakers who track down a crazed conspiracy theorist only to have him go missing brought not only rave reviews but rave reactions from festival crowds. Now wider US audiences will be able to see it for themselves with news that XLrator Media has acquired all US distribution rights to the thriller written and directed by Christopher MacBride and produced by Lee Kim. To quote the press release:XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon announced the deal today. "Christopher's riveting film explores the fascinating world of the Illuminati, conspiracy theorists and secret societies. MAGIC MAGIC Trailer Has Creepy Michael Cera Torment Juno Temple in Chile

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Chilean director Sebastián Silva (The Maid, Old Cats, Life Kills Me) makes his English language debut with this psychological thriller featuring intimidation, hypnosis and maybe just a bit of overwrought villainy on the part of Michael Cera. Maria Full of Grace star Catalina Sandino and Emily "Babydoll" Browning also appear in supporting roles. The film played (quietly) at Sundance this year, and while it never secured a theatrical release, it is coming to DVD/VOD in August.  Personally, I'm still waiting for Juno Temple to become a bonafide star, as the right part has eluded her even as she brings a significant freshness to whatever project she turns up in. None of these (Killer Joe, Cracks, The Brass Teapot, Dirty Girl, Mr. Nobody) got any mainstream notice. While I...

Smaug Rises in Teaser Trailer for THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 11:50 AM PDT

When the link came through, I admit I hesitated a bit. Another Hobbit teaser! Should I wait to see it on the big screen? Can a book I've read dozens of times still be spoiled?Well, that lasted about 15 seconds, and I caved. What do we get this time 'round? We get dwarves in barrels, spiders hunting our titular lead, and our first good look at that "most specially greedy, strong and wicked worm", Señor Smaug. We also get to see more of the introduction of some LOTR gang in the form of one Legolas, along with his fair love interest, that woman who was once on some TV show about castaways. Let me be the thousandth of many that will point out that, yes,...

Skip Your Daily Coffee, Buy JT Petty's SOFT FOR DIGGING Instead

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 11:30 AM PDT

It was twelve years ago that a young director named JT Petty first made an impression on the world when his debut feature, Soft For Digging, was unleashed at Sundance. Petty has charted an unusual, challenging career since with his output ranging from video game scripts - most notably several Splinter Cell games - to controversial faux doc S&MAN and a flirtation with the mainstream industry with 2008 effort The Burrowers. Petty's a creatively restless sort and somehow through all of this the film that opened it all up for him has proven rather difficult to see. But not any more. I'll let Petty explain it himself, in the following open letter to his mother. Dear Mom, Big day today, I'm releasing my first movie,...

7 Fantastic Computer Enabled Movie Battles

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Occasionally I play video games like Medieval II: Total War or Supreme Commander, and whenever I see large scale battles being fought in real-time on my modest personal computer, I am reminded of the epic movies of the fifties and sixties. The leaps and bounds with which this technology has evolved is astounding. Originally I wanted this list to be about computer enabled battles, but I was soon drowning in titles. Computers now play an essential part in every movie which needs huge crowds: it's cheaper to render them than to rent them. Be it Goth warriors battling Romans in Gladiator or Chinese eh... military consultants crossing the Korean border in Taegukgi, computer generated battles are now quite common. But the biggest added value of...

An Exclusive First Look At Gritty Fight Flick BARRIO BRAWLER

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Put aside your preconceptions about independent production house The Asylum for just a moment. Because while, yes, a sizable percentage of their output is given over to made for television creature features and the 'mockbusters' they made famous, they're doing something entirely different with Jose Montesinos' Barrio Brawler. How so? Barrio Brawler a totally original property, for one thing, written by Montesinos as well as directed by him. And while it certainly follows a well established format amongst fight films it's not riding the coattails of anything. Second, as you may have picked up, it's a fight movie. A no holds barred, skilled martial artists in a warehouse beating the tar out of one another, fight flick. Third? Look at the bottom of the poster....

BRAINGASM Teaser Puts The Documentary Spotlight on ASMR

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT

I have always wondered if the two signature scenes in The Pang Brother's The Eye -- one involving a ghost in a classroom, the other involving an elevator -- came about because the filmmakers did some kind of scientific research as to how an exact sound (or image) can literally send the chills down your spine.  So many people got the goosebumps from those scenes, at least as confirmed anecdotally by yours truly after the film took its North American premiere at a festival of seasoned horror veterans and midnight maniacs.  I indulged in the mental image of the Pang's in white lab coats in some anonymous office interior trying out sounds like old Hitchcock for that extra physiological bump.  The term "Autonomous Sensory Meridian...

Fresh Trailer For LA Selected Boxing Doc TAPIA

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Soon to premiere at the LA Film Festival, Eddie Alcazar's documentary Tapia chronicles the turbulent life of champion boxer Johnny Tapia as told in his own words via the final interviews granted before his untimely death.Albuquerque-born boxer Johnny Tapia's life was a maelstrom of turmoil. The glory of his punishing ring prowess and handful of world titles across three weight classes forever jockeyed with personal demons: his mother's kidnapping and murder when he was 8, drug addiction, mental illness and suicide attempts. Before the fighter's tragic death last year at the age of 45, director Eddie Alcazar spent time with Tapia researching a biopic. What would become his last interviews are now the beating heart of Alcazar's gripping, elegiac documentary. In it, the bedeviled, soft-spoken...

Haneke Presents New Book, Calls Directors Enjoying Their Old Films 'Retards'

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 09:00 AM PDT

During an intense evening presentation, the Filmmuseum Austria has presented a new book about Michael Haneke called "Haneke über Haneke" ("Haneke on Haneke"). The book comes out in German via Alexander Verlag. Originally published in France Haneke On Haneke is presented as a long discussion with the director of films like The White Ribbon and Caché.  Michel Cieutat and Philippe Rouyer lead the interview and the book does not hide being inspired heavily by the famous interview of François Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock. All of Haneke's films are discussed in detail, including his Oscar-winning Amour, while also offering some rare insight into the private life of one of the most accomplished directors in modern cinema. Haneke himself also appeared at the Filmmuseum and discussed many...

It's Organic Blood And Bone In The 100 BLOODY ACRES Trailer

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Coming to cinemas and VOD in North America from June 28 is 100 Bloody Acres, the fantastic comedy horror debut from Colin and Cameron Cairnes. Like the Leyland brothers and Spierigs before them, the Cairnes brothers are carving out a great on screen brand that we think will go from strength to strength.100 Bloody Acres stars Damon Herriman and Angus Sampson, who are fast turning into US supporting character stalwarts (see Justified, The Lone Ranger, Insidious) as well as Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, Jamie Kristian and John Jarratt. In 100 Bloody Acres, brothers Reg and Lindsay Morgan are struggling to keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business in motion. Their secret "recipe" for success (using dead car crash victims in their product) was a huge...
