PiFan 2013 Review: THE CONGRESS Is A Unique Cinematic Mind-Bender Posted: 29 Jul 2013 03:45 AM PDT -thumb-200x200-40665.jpg) Loosely based on the sci-fi musings of Stanislav Lem, Ari Folman follows up his Oscar-nominated Waltz With Bashir with this ambitious and mostly successful exploration of Celebrity, Cinema and the subconscious. One of the biggest criticisms of Cinema, and Hollywood in particular, is that there are no good roles for women after they reach a certain age. Once they hit their 30s, their 40s if they're very lucky, then most jobbing actresses either run out of work or find themselves stuck playing wives, mothers, matrons or grannies for the rest of their careers. It is with this sentiment in mind that Ari Folman opens The Congress, his loose yet ambitious adaptation of Solaris author Stanislav Lem's 1971 novel, The Futurological Congress. Robin Wright plays a... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
PiFan 2013 Review: THE TERROR LIVE Starts Strong But Runs Out of Steam Posted: 29 Jul 2013 02:23 AM PDT In an era of oversaturation at the cineplex, with countless retreads and follow-ups dominating the marquees, sometimes a gimmick is just the trick to freshen things up. A clever and well-executed hook can seem fresh and original, but if poorly done, it can easily torpedo a film. In the case of new Korean action-thriller The Terror Live, a chamber piece that takes place entirely in a radio recording studio, the gimmick in the premise is both its saving grave and its downfall. Radio show host Yoon Young-hwa receives a guest call while on air from a man claiming to have a bomb. When flippantly dismissed by the host, the caller blows up a bridge next door. Now Young-hwa, who was previously a primetime TV news... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Full Disclosure: Twitch's Lists of Shame - July Posted: 28 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT As we move into the second half of the year I figured it would be a great opportunity to mix things up a bit in this constantly evolving feature. You will have noticed that as of June we have moved to a gallery format. This month we also welcome a number of our new contributors to participate in this exercise in cinematic attrition. July sees one of my all-time favourite films, Steven Spielberg's Jaws, savoured for the very first time, as well as offerings from Kazan, Kurosawa, Kubrick and even Pixar's Andrew Stanton. As ever, this is not an opportunity to ridicule those who have forgone the "essential works" in search of more esoteric thrills, but rather the chance to embrace, assess and appreciate commonly-held...
